  • Had an airplane job cancel, so took a moment to restore the steering wheel on my own car! We start with a thorough cleaning, then light sanding, degreasing, and first we paint with colourlock's consumer line leather fresh product, then I show you the full base coat/ clear coat process. Even with all the filming, this took under an hour.

      what color kit you used?

  • @MrRaffiano

    Hey. Is it possible to skip the sanding step if only a small section on the top of the steering wheel needs to be dyed? Just cleaning and and then the paint?
    Also, can i add clear coat on the rest of the steering wheel to try to blend the matte finnish with the newly painted area (which will be clear coated)?

  • @rbfit5672
    @rbfit5672 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What was the finish you used on the steering wheel? Was is Shield from the kit or something else and what is crosslinker?

  • @ahmedam77
    @ahmedam77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried it with normal leather dye, but when adding the coat, the dye started to fall off in some spots

    What products did you use for the primer, base coat and clear coat? I have a bmw wheel as well and want to make it look perfect again.

    • @AvianaAircraft
      @AvianaAircraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You would have to check with @colourlock UK & North America but I don't believe they sell the primer/base/clearcoat system direct to consumers.
      Honestly though, if you prep the wheel properly and spray on leather fresh (their one step product) it will give you great results! I spray my work boots with that stuff and it looks great and is super easy. Just spray multiple thin coats and dry in between layers with a hairdryer. Here is a link to that product amzn.to/3iVAHvp
      If you have any cuts or gouges, you may want to add some black fluid leather filler too which is in this kit: amzn.to/3lLAcWP

    Nice video, thanks for this I'm going to do this on my e61 530i steering wheel. Question, it's now 4-5 months on, does it still look good?

    did the leather become "more black" with time or it remained kinda grey?

    • @AvianaAircraft
      @AvianaAircraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It did get shinier with use over time. Next time will use a lower percentage of matte top coat.

    Thanks for the video! I got the colourlock black fresh dye, the strong cleaner, brush and sanding block. I followed your steps but didn't used colourlock spirit, instead I uses 70% IPA and the sponge method. I feel I did something wrong because I lost the leather grain, the surface feels rough and when adding colourlock leather shield 24 hrs after paint, the color came off... any ideas? Thanks!

      How old is the steering wheel and what kind of car is it out of?

      @@josefranco2276 So generally those come with a pretty smooth leather to begin with. If you spray it on, you might be able to get a better texture or if you sponge it on, try to create some texture by not leveling out the paint as much.
      You could still have some oil soaked into the steering wheel if the paint is not sticking properly. I will ping Ram with colourlock to see if he has any additional ideas.

      @@AvianaAircraft Thanks for your input! I already contacted Colourlock. Sounds like better cleaning and spraying would help to get better results.

      @seeya1421 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jose, I think the roughness could occur if you sand excessively. This may also be the reason why you've lost the grain. It could also be down to the IPA used but it has to be one of those two reasons. In terms of leather Shield, if its taking colour out - just wait a little longer. In most cases 24 hours is enough but it can take longer for the paint to set. I'd say wait a week. Hope this helps.
