  • In this episode of Sailing Zephyr BOAT DAMAGE & Winter Projects - The Return to Zephyr, head back to the boat after nearly 2 months away. We review the damage we sustained from the storm that claimed more than 20 boats and get stuck in to some of the many boat projects we have coming up.
    Lastly, we prepare Zephyr for yet another big storm that is rolling down from France along the Castellon coast.
    Hope you enjoy the video!

      The lines that broke were the marina inwater mooring lines. Our stern lines were okay. But absolutely good advice. 😀👍

    Just discovered the three videos on how you found and bought Zephyr a couple of days ago, have binge-watched more than a quarter of the earliest episodes and should be caught up by the time Ep. 44 shows up. I have really enjoyed following your gutsy story of high sea adventure, you sure haven't wasted any time getting to where you are now. Ah if I were only younger! Much respect.

      Must tell you a bit of a secret. I have two subs with you under different names, the original comment above is from my PC and this one is from my tablet. (I'm a bit inconsistent at times) Hope this doesn't confuse you, just want you to know I've done it so I won't miss a single episode no matter where you or I may be. Sorry to see the damage to Zephyr. Hey I'm so impressed with the speed you guys have picked up so many of the sailing skills. I have two more that will serve you well. I haven't seen or heard you refer to using one of these so I'm suggesting them for your consideration. A couple of times I have seen where one or the other could have quite likely reduced the stress level around the dock. The two I have in mind are: A) the difference between prop walk and prop wash, and using each TO YOUR ADVANTAGE and B) SPRINGING on to a dock and Springing off of a dock.
    Prop Walk vs. Prop Wash are similar but yet different, and you can easily google "prop walk vs prop wash" and for the other "springing onto and off of docks". You can find more videos and drawings than you'll ever need to master them. If you're interested, check into these, but my most important suggestion to you is after you do the reading and understanding, you must practice!!! Start on calm days and see how your boat handles, then ratchet it up, try these same skills on a 6-8 kt. day, then a 10-12 kt. day, and keep practicing until you are comfortable in the execution. I hope one day to see you executing one or the other of these skills in a video. You guys blow me away with your moxie. Imagine, just one day saying "I think we'll buy a boat and sail it across the ocean". Keep up the videos, you're doing a great job.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Terry -
      Thanks for the great feedback and tips.
      We are looking into our proper walk further and springing onto and off a dock. The books are out and we are busy learning. We will then as you suggested, find a calm day and get out and practice. Hopefully we can show you a successful attempt one day in a video. :) Thank you so much for watching out videos. x

      @@SailingZephyr OMG that back pain.... I am 54 now and it startet as I was in the beginning 30ies... to much extreme skiing, to much mountainbiking and wrong training - no streching was the fault. If I may give you an advice: Start getting the right therapy NOW and do not wait. I did not do so and it got more severe over the years and now with lots of efforts an daily praciticing, I slowly get rid of and it almost did cost me one of my intervertebral discs. The reason for my 20 years of backpain was just a simple shrtening of mucles and ligaments and it hurts like hell but is easy to treat if you start early!
      Otherwise all the best to both of you, I smile a lot about your adventure as I am a sailor since I was 8 years old and watch you from anothr pov ;-)

    Hanging upside down is good for the lower back. A friend in Florida had a table that you can lean against and lock your legs in, raise your arms and go upside down. As you lower your arms, the table stands back up.

    James, you look like you either popped a vertie or had Lumbago, defenetly one to have checked at the hospital, remember they are free in my country and normally pretty good. In regards to the damage, I have my boat down in Marina de Valencia and underwent the storm without a scratch, 20 damaged boats calls for a run away from Burriana ASAP, moreso as there are more storms coming like this, in Marina de Valencia, Pobla de Farnals or Club Nautico de Valencia, ayour boat will be safe and will be looked after when the shit hits the fan. Also look for marinas where there are people living permanently in the boat and make sure you dock next to them! I am constantly calling them when storms hit and Im away, which is most of the time as I am from Madrid. About the engine sound, it sounded like you might have cracked the exhaust or even worse, twisted the shaft, if that is the case, don´t turn it on until the mecanich and the ensurance goes there. Im really sorry that you have to come back to the boat with damage (both in yourself and in the Boat) but don´t let it get you, boat life has very high ups and very low downs and once you have that fixed and i na month or so the weather will be nice and sailing around that coast is amazing so cheer up , your girlfriend looks very familiar by the way, I am sure we have crossed paths, in any case if you decide to go down to marina de Valencia I´m available for recommendations. all the best. Hi, I’m really enjoying your channel. Regarding your entry door, it sounded like you were going to completely replace it. An option which you might have already considered or are in the ‘process of’ would be to secure the Plexiglas to the interior of the doors. I don’t know if that’s what you want aesthetically but the Plexi could be easily removed. It looks like there is enough room to insert a ¼’’-20 Tee-nut or flanged insert nut into each door corner. You could then secure the trimmed plexi to the doors using Wing, Star or T handles (with 1/4-20 bolts). The 1/4-20 (or smaller) components can be sourced at most hardware stores or Amazon. Hoping you enjoy working on your boat.
    Also, with this removable option (weather/cleaning), you could trim the plexi/acrylic so it doesn't touch other door hardware. You could use a taped gasket on the plexi to seal it if necessary.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David -
      Cheers for the awesome feedback. We had considered your solution as well. But we want to also add some security with acrylic option. The timber doors are very week. If we struggle to replace them then we will be using your option for sure. Cheers for following us mate.

    • @davidgauvin8441
      @davidgauvin8441 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingZephyr I was going to mention adding the acrylic to the inside would add to the security factor, squareness and rigidity. If the hinges on your louvered doors are sufficient then you could just attach a store bought latching system on the acrylic (cabin side, to lock from inside). Or even make simple gate latches from left over scraps of acrylic, bolts and nuts... your boat, enjoy the project...whatever it is. hoping your back problem sorts out.

    Would BIG diameter fenders fixed in position off the stern have helped to make a difference to mitigate damage?

    Why do you rely on marina dock lines if this their history?
    I only ever use our own and double up as necessary

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As it's Med mooring, you only have one end of the boat secured to the marina dock using your own lines. The other two lines at the other end of the boat are fixed to concrete blocks in the water by the marina. You retrieve these lines and attach them to the other end of your boat. Those are the lines the broke. Which is why the damage is the marinas fault as they are responsible for the those lines. Apologies if my explanation is rubbish. If I've only confused things more, just TH-cam Med Mooring and I'm sure more experienced people than myself will make sense of this. Cheers :)

    Congrats on chasing that dream! Still whoa, flag on the play... a few continuity issues.. :) Holding up a broke shelf from the tie rod pulling out of the chain plate.. where/when did that come from? Did I miss a vid? I thought it only cracked the gel coat and was repaired the 2nd time? Or was the shelf left over from the original damage? Also, what was the resolution on the bearings you found rolling around on the deck (from the in-mast furler)? More on your backgrounds as well. Here we thought you were Aussie’s (at first) but family in Spain & boat flying Canada flag? No need to answer here unless you’d like but please cover it in a future episode if you can.
