    It's not just a glass breaker. It also serves as a non-lethal impact device

    As a first responder I’ve used the glass breaker and the knife to cut seatbelts at the same time I SO MUCH PREFER than anything else. Again that’s me cause of the type of field I’m in. As a citizen it’s more convenient to since no one really Carry’s JUST a glass breaker in their pocket. It’s better to have it than not need it than to need it and not have it. To each their own.

    My Dirac Delta doesn't make the twang sound your spring might be a little loose. Microtech has a great warranty & I'm sure they would fix it or replace it if you wanted. I use to feel like you do about the practicality of an otf. I now love them because they are just fun & cool. Not every knife has to be the ultimate edc, like a Koenig Arius which is perfect imo. The Dirac does what I want, look amazing, & click open at the push of a button. Knives don't have to always be so serious.

    How are you going to get to the glass breaker that you carry separately in your vehicle if you lock yourself out in an emergency? I'm guessing you would use the glass breaker on the end of your knife which should always be in your pocket.

    Hmm. I’ve had no problem cutting with mine. Rope, cardboard, seatbelts, rubber hose, tires, wood , clothing etc . As a first responder it has been great having an OTF double edge. Sounds like you prefer a more traditional knife, to each their own. Let me know if you want to sell that useless knife of yours.

      @wrjames38 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 100%! I've used my UTX 85 and Benchmade Autocrat for cutting everything from rope/twine to clear flexible tubing and everything in between. Most of the reviewers That give opinions on these blades don't cut much in everyday life me thinks!

    • @beardedgear
      @beardedgear  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I make statements on how double edged OTF’s perform precisely because I do cut with them. They have inferior edge geometry to most out the side folding knives that have paid any attention to cutting performance. But I’m sure I’m talking nonsense and must be a little girl who doesn’t know how to cut rope and twine like you 😂

      @wrjames38 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@beardedgear Listen to what Free dreaming said in his post! You live in California and you cut what with a OTF... Amazon boxes, Mail, a few pieces of Spam? Your opinion is skewed and you thinking bringing up geometry makes you sound well informed!
      Just cause someone has a different opinion actually based on experience, You get defensive at the first response? Little girl it is 🐱

    • @beardedgear
      @beardedgear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wrjames38 I didn’t say that double edged OTF’s can’t cut or that people aren’t allowed to like using them. I said they’re inferior for just about any slicing task because of their blade geometry. Coming in my comments and arguing with points I made in my review seems like a pretty fair reason for me to respond with the logic that blade geometry matters. A double edged OTF is designed for piercing tasks. Do you disagree?

    • @beardedgear
      @beardedgear  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wrjames38 if you or the original commenter would like to hop on my podcast and debate why you think that double edged OTF’s posses better cutting performance than folding knives I will gladly host the conversation. Seriously.

    I wasn't going to comment but after the glass breaker comment I decided to. The glass breaker not only can break some glass but serves has a great non lethal defense tool so maybe think outside your box next time and what people may like the knife for.

    • @beardedgear

    The button preference is definitely according to what you started with on OTFs. (oh, you could add your extra, separate glass breaker to a fanny pack with each and every separate EDC piece(s)… otherwise you could trim down your gear and use one on the butt of a knife ;-} )

  • @InwwardHeel

    Completely agree with you on this review, I love my Dirac Delta but it is not designed to be an EDC, it's only a sneaky "tactical" knife (I personally use a Benchmade freek as EDC)
    Also I had the same spring sing as you demonstrate and it annoyed me so much. I saw a video from TheHollowGrind who shows how to open and clean it. I did it and it sounds very nice now !
    I believe I broke the warranty but since I'm in Europe I didn't plan to send it to Microtech anyway haha
    PS : I like the glass breaker as a softer alternative for defense !

      I know your comment is two years old. Microtech will honor their warranty as long as the knife isn't heavily modified or damaged. Simply taking it apart won't cause them to void the warranty. Unless it was damaged from negligence.

    I don’t like glass breakers either however, having one on a out the front knife like that could be beneficial. I am no expert in self-defense or anything like that but I believe that the glass breaker could be used as a attitude adjustment tool instead of the business end of the Knife. I’m not any kind of expert on self-defense. However, I believe that using the glass breaker would be a better option than the blade.

    The best fix for the twang is a bit of Teflon tape wrapped around the center of the spring. That or a glob of lithium grease. Teflon tape lasts longer and muffles better IMO

      It’s not that it won’t cut, it’s that the blade profile is inferior for typical cutting tasks because it’s really thick behind the edge, and is a little cumbersome in my experience.

    They have the "Cool Factor" through the roof, so to speak, but OTFs especially with a dagger blade are just not going to be capable slicers. They do not have the blade geometry for it....just like most fixed blade daggers. Not a practical edc blade.

  • @jagpilotohio

    Interesting. Completely disagree on glass breaker. Since I always have my knife on me when I’m driving I think the idea of always having a glass breaker handy makes a lot of sense. I actually think MORE knives ought to have glass breakers.
    I would agree however that for use as an everyday carry or even a self defense weapon they are sort of dumb.
    OTF’s are sort of pointless other than playing with them. I have one OTF, a UTX-85 striclty for the “fun” factor of it, but it’s certainly not a great EDC. I won’t own another. One is enough

    • @KB-kw8ni

      @jagpilotohio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KB-kw8ni all blade shapes in an OTF Are quite narrow. Even a drop point or Tanto when it’s quite narrow is not an ideal EDC blade shape. If you like them, great, but they are crummy for everyday use compared to most other choices. My Microtech is fun, but I only throw it in my pocket to change things up now and then.
