  • What makes the movie Highlander so special and why might it be one of the best story concepts of the 1980s? In this video we discuss this 1986 cult-classic.

It's one of those special films that I take out and watch every few years ever since it came out. After such disappointing sequels the tv series was flawed but highly enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the Adrian Paul character and the breadth of the series through many wonderful flashbacks to older times. It is indeed an 80s classic.

I once read (or heard) something explaining Connor's absence from their home on the night of Kurgan's attack. I can't remember if it was in the novelization of the movie or if I just picked it up somewhere else (maybe a commentary track on a DVD). I don't remember, but it's explained that Connor, having a flock of sheep, was out that evening trying to locate several that had gone missing. There may even have been an edit cutting those segments of dialogue which explain that. Again, I just don't recall, but I do remember the reason cited.

You fail to understand, sir, The Highlander was a documentary, and the events were filmed in real-time.

Haha! I knew deep down I was wrong. Those Watchers do amazing work.

Running away from a murder scene, being arrested and then set free is exactly what should happen. Without any actual evidence there is no reason to hold him. So why is this a strange event?

Good point. I think at the minimum you can hold someone in custody for 24 hours and in exceptional circumstances you can hold them for 36 hours all the way to 72 hours. After that I think the 6th Amendment protects you. It was strange that they barely conduct an investigation of Nash/MacLeod before they let him go. With the bruise on his face, fleeing the crime scene, striking a police officer, being an antique dealer, finding an antique sword at the crime scene, and then later ancient metal in the parking garage pillar, I would have guessed they would have kept him longer than what seems like a couple of hours. It just seemed odd thats all. With that said, I am completely willing to concede that letting him go was totally normal.

I recently watched it and it reminds me somewhat of two things, music videos of the 80's (stylistically) nd the film Flash Gordon of the similar vintage. I think both that Highlander is more than a bit campy and could have used a better director and writer. It could have been a lot more serious, instead now it both smacks of the 80's (it's one of those films that does not age well) and feels, well, goofy.

Yeah, I agree. Apparently the script was a bit more serious and complex. But that was according to the screenwriters, the script could have been really bad. I have a hunch that things were fiddled with from script to screen and instead of elevating above the time period in which it was filmed, it planted itself firmly in the 80s. But... oddly, that is why I love it.
