  • In this video we review the 1981 film, Excalibur, and explore why it is still one of the best fantasy films of the 1980s and maybe even of all time.
    Dragonslayer Review: • Dragonslayer: The 80s ...
Living In The Past is a channel about revisiting pop culture from the past. Hosted by Jeremy Scott and Devin Kleffer (along with Carl the Intern), these two (three) friends can’t help but revisit the movies and TV shows that they loved from their younger years. Come along and get a little nostalgic with us as we look back, enjoy, and ask the important question: is it still OK to like this stuff?

One of the few movies that the opening titles gives me chills down my spine. We were shown this in literature history class, and the room was…silent. Such a magnificent film. The scene where they ride to Ofortuna playing is GLORIOUS‼️ Watching this hypes me up to go watch it. As usual GREAT video!

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah the "O Fortuna" moment is stunning!

Just such a strange yet brilliant film. Nicholson was gone too soon but this was his greatest role, at least on film.

Agree about it being strange. I think that was the allure for me as a kid.

@@livingthepast Strange isn't inherently a bad thing. It has a charm and otherworldliness all of its own.

      Nicholson?
All too many of the actors of this movie were gone too soon. Not the least Robert Addie who was just 43 when he died. After Excalibur, he was a regular on "Robin of Sherwood" - and who knows what else he could have achieved, had lung cancer not robbed us of him.
Nicholas Clay died of liver cancer at age 53.

@@ohauss Nicol Williamson, I meant. It must have autocorrected Nicol to Nicholson and I never caught it.

The greatest Arthurian legend movie because it embraces the myth not try to subvert it. The movie had a great mixture of the pagan and the Christian.
Mirren and Nicholson had a bad breakup prior to filming resulting in the onscreen tension.
The use of Wagner as the soundtrack was a sublime choice.

Thanks for the info on Mirren and Nicholson. I had no idea they were in a relationship. I had just read they did not get along.

@@livingthepastI have a dvd with Boormam’s commentary. He revealed how the messy off screen relationship affected the movie.

It was one of those fantasy films that was on a lot as a kid. 80's telly was the best. I thought it was good but a bit different from the Arthur story I had been accustomed to. I thought it was an odd mix, neither fish nor fowl. As an 80's fantasy film it was decent enough. probably in my top twenty 80's fantasy films.

Dragonslayer would make my top ten of 80's fantasy films.

Dragonslayer is soooo underrated and holds up so well today. I am still blown away by the Dragon design.

@@livingthepast Yeah, a very good film, just missed something for Conan success, maybe it was the lead? Maybe too clever? I just went through wiki and made my top ten! :D
