    My first straight razor was a gold dollar 66. Cost me 20 bucks brand new.
    Still have it though I’ve come to appreciate vintage razors lately. Still use it from time to time. Shaved pretty good

    Great videos and very informative! Thanks!!! I just started on straight razor shaving and i bought cheap straight razor that is not shave ready and i will give it out for honing. Tell me how much of a difference should i expect from a Dovo? I paid 8€ ($10) for it , in order to check out whether i like the procedure or not and i would like to get a really fancy one at some point, if i decide to take this shaving route.Thanks in advance and keep them coming!!!

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question G! ;) It's all about the edge you can use a cheap straight razor, or a new name brand straight razor or a vintage Dovo for a great price, and 8€ ($10) is a great price, mate. The more expensive straight razors will have a better fit and finish, but they all will shave the same with a good edge on them. So start on the cheap (I like the sounds of your Dovo) and get a good edge put on them. Then you can see if this is something you feel like you will really enjoy.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Amir! ;) They are all Chinese-made Straight Razors with different colors or types of scales, most are carbon steel, some like the Gold Dollar 800 will be stainless steel. The Gold Dollar 66 should be the cheap and the 800 the most expensive. The GD 66 is great to learn how to hone and shave. It will really depend on what you are looking for it a GD Straight Razor the Stainless Steel should be more forgiving with rust. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amir even the GD 66 will take a good edge, but the GD 800 being Stainless Steel will keep an edge longer and will shave well. The comfortability of the edge has more to do with the finishing stone used, not so much the steel. :) #Heart

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions Amir! ;) I'm feeling better and hopefully, I'll have some new videos coming soon. Today I would go with the Carbon Steel GD straight razor over the Stainless Steel. As far as getting a comfortable shave goes it's all about the edge and how is finished. I like the natural finishing stones over the synthetic stones, natural stones impart a smoother/softer/more comfortable edge and the Carbon Steel is easier to work with than Stainless Steel.

      I do have a new no name straight razor that I got from China that's like that. Probably a Gold Dollar or ZY, it's from my guy that I get Gold Dollar's and ZY's from. But the blade already seats straight in the scales, which are real wood and quite nice. Hey, thanks for the great comments! 😀

    • @dnichl

      the only reason I've found that cause the blade to go off center on my gold dollars is bent pins or improper peening.

    Thanks for this video. i thought I'd give a straight razor a try, and didn't want to spend a fortune in the process.
    I got the ZY Men Wood Straight Edge Shaving Razor Set Kit Barber Shave Beard Folding Knife+Leather Sharpening Strop Belt+Polishing Paste, and I am amazed at what I got for £13.05 shave ready.
    I can see what you mean about re-shaping the blade...this and you other videos have been really useful.
    Just to add.....had a bit of a problem shipping to UK..it got returned to sender once as it was considered a weapon, but the ZY store sent it again using a different mail service.

That's exactly what I did and now I couldn't imagine shaving any other way. :) And that's very interesting the your ZY was consider a weapon. How was it labeled?
      Thanks for the great comment and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :)

    • @Split10uk
      @Split10uk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was labelled "makeup tool". There isn't any writing on the blade, but it was advertised as 420 stainless steel razor with wooden handle, and it seems well made....blade fits central etc and the handle has a nice finish.
      I ordered shave ready (extra £1.06) and it seems pretty good to me judging by what I have seen on your channel.
      I will strop it before use, and do the fingernail test to check for burrs.
      It came with belt and paste, and I need to check your videos out to find out the best way to do it.
      Apart from the end that I may put a slight radius on, and I don't think it needs any grinding on a stone.
      I use an old fashioned safety razor anyway, so I have some idea how to wet shave.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First congrats on getting your new ZY straight razor! High Five! :) Wow, it was labelled "makeup tool"... that's crazy... maybe they x-rayed it or something. :0 Your ZY sound nice by the description, but don't do the fingernail test that will wreck the edge. I only do that after I set the bevel and know I'm going on through the progression to hone the edge to shave ready. Try "Tree Topping" hair mid way up off of your arm it's a much better test to check if you straight razor is shave ready. The video I would recommend for you sense your ZY came shave ready is "How To Maintain Keeping a Straight Razor Edge" here is the link goo.gl/qgfFBx. And sense your already use to shave in the old fashion way with a DE safety razor most of the same skills will apply. Remember to try to keep the blade at a 30 degree or less angle off of your face and use just the weight of the razor only. Please let me know how you get a long with your new ZY. :) Thanks for the great comments and again Congrats on the your new ZY! :)
