Been traveling for the last 5 weeks (epic road trip) and have not been using straights for a while. Gotta get back into it! I remember being a kid and taking a bath with my “floating” bar of Ivory! @@Martins-Shaves123 Thanks Martin. I did work on peening these pins to the safe extent of my skill set. The pivot pin and center pin are the washerless type and have been mushroomed into the scales from some time ago. They currently have very little protruding stock left. I am not sure the last time I saw a non-plastic toothpaste tube here in Murica. I had totally forgotten about those lead tubes until I started looking into the genuine Burma-Shave. For centuries in my trade, lead alloys were used for type in print production. I saw on a documentary on Linotype machines where it was common to use an allow ‘cast type slug’ to stir one’s coffee in the optional cup holder built into of that world changing invention. When I was in the ink business, I remember in the 80’s seeing a Linotype machine on display at the Smithsonian Museum and commenting to my wife that I had customers who still used this type of equipment then. One of these businesses that I know of still uses it today.

While the Confusah Computah had a self diagnostic mode, the replacable electronics had market cycles were way too short. It really sucked to find that a component is no longer made and out of stock. You really missed the forest for the trees here. The large, and many, complaints about Dovo's aren't that they don't come shave ready. It's because of the habitual QC issues, such as the frown you mentioned early in your video. A frown that regularly shows up, not because of flat stones, but because of warps down the edge. Why would you think a convex stone vs a flat stone is going to have any different contact down the length of the bevel? Convex hones contact the same space but at a different angle. This speaks to a lacking on your part.

      @@James-wg8qk HI James. Thanks for tuning in and offering everyone your opinion. I am quite experienced in the understanding of the points you make, I regret that you have not progressed from where you are. All shave forum Honemaster Superiors and Drone Doners who have NEVER tried a convexed hone have regurgitated those exact points for years. I can even list the names for you. You are probably not aware that these “warps down the edge” you speak of likely come from the ONLY existing Solingen Forge in which ALL Solingen razor makers must use to market a protected “Solingen” trademark. These crappy warped Solingen razor blanks are also sold outside Germany. You will hear the most whining about Dovo only because they represent many times the volumes of other makers. As for my lackings, I am well aware of every one of them, and this is not one. Looking forward to actually help others, can you please come out of your parents basement and make us some honing videos on the topic to prove you are not just another expert level keyboard krusader that has only mastered BS. @billm.2677 I don't know how, from any of my comment, you gathered that I have never tried either a convex stone or a blade that had been honed by one. I am also not certain how you think a convex stone will change the surface area of contact, when the whole purpose of a convex stone is to change the angle and profile of the bevel to the apex. When you make videos, you open yourself up to criticism and discourse. If that is something your ego can't handle, maybe consider not making them. For your own mental and emotional health. These QC issues with Dovo are so widely known and have played their fair part in the company failing. Personally, I hope they pull it together, cause when a Dovo is good, it's good. Otherwise, why pay a premium price for a crap shoot on quality? Especially when there are so many other makers out there that can produce consistent quality. Take Ralf Aust, for example. Solingen based, one man operation, and never sends out the garbage Dovo has. Honestly, Bill, if you can't hold a conversation without making wild and unfounded personal attacks, I would prefer you just not reply.

    • @billm.2677
      @billm.2677 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@James-wg8qk I still doubt you ever honed off a convex hone, convince me. Do you understand an elliptically crowned hone? If so, you could understand how contact surfaces change so a blade and spine contact with varies. I and others have presented it many times here on TH-cam. Most users of convex hones have this elliptically crowned surface, even though the 1840s German grinders handbook cataloging the techniques does not specify a cross crowning nor curvature specifications. Let’s understand, this is my channel, where I talk about what I want, and I control the content. If you are looking a safe haven for the bloviating open criticism and discourse that is your exemplified style, start your own channel. And you are completely free to not watch my stuff or comment. I really hope you don’t think that anything you can say damages my ego or mental and emotional health. What Shave Forum did you say you were affiliated with again? I’d guess the Bludgeon & Beatdown or the Squatters Razor Palace based on your typical parroting of the typical Dovo QC whine. And if you have to blame Dovo because you can’t hone their stuff without starting by bread-knifing 1/16 off on a diamond plate, it is not them, it is you. Oh and let’s take Ralf Aust who generallyhas a fine reputation for razor making, but has sent out his fair share of poorly QC’d bent/warped razors. Probably because like every other production razor maker, he is too cheap or lazy to forge his own stuff and uses the same crappy bent up stuff from Hugo-Herkenrath forge that everyone else use. I applaud that he did make good on some very sloppy scale trimming a well known collector caught him trying to pass off as good QC. The QC manager probably missed something when he hit it with his white stick. One good thing about Ralf is that he had Brad Maggard go over there and teach him how to hone right. “So many others”? Give me a break, Straight razors are almost universally dying. When Ralf hangs up his apron, there will be not apprentice who will pick it up. I’m not really here to hold conversations. And, if you come on MY channel to deliver me a scolding that ends with “This speaks to a lacking on your part”, then expect me to not to discuss it on a later vid your are kidding yourself. Somehow when I do this and invite those who are offended to Smash that Unlike and Unsubscribe button, I always wind up with more subscribers from around the world. For a someone without a financial barrier, it is great. Stainless construction, superb grinding and individual numbering present an added long term value. For those with cost limits that may be just “Straight Razor Curious” I like to suggest any of the lower cost Thiers Issard products best, if going new. Hi Bill, It's been a while since I last watched one of your videos and I see that you are still using the convex honing method or bevel undercutting, to use an engineering term. I've had many discussions with Jarrod and yourself in the past, trying to understand the principles of convex honing and the understanding the objectives of getting a smoother shave by increasing flexibility at the bevel. I now believe that the true benefits with convex honing are only experienced on wedge ground razors, the more grind the razor has the less effect convex honing has. The benefits of convex honing a fully ground razor is negligible, due to the flex in the blade being greater than the flex afforded by convex honing. Even though the convex hone or undercutting is the there, the thinner blade needs less force to flex, therefore making the convex hone redundant. The sound or singing of a full hollow razor tells you it's flexing, if it didn't sing then the convex honing wins. That's why I believe that there are no or any benefits convex honing modern razors. The detailed study on convex honing performed in the earlier 1800s by a German University, which Jarrod and yourself mentioned to me, must have been performed using wedge razors as fully ground razors were on available from 1870 onwards. Therefore their findings are limited to heavy wedge style wedge razors and not fully ground razors of today. I wouldn't recommend anyone spending the time and effort learning to convex hone, unless they only have wedge or 1/4 hollow razors.

      @@davec1768 Hi Dave. Hope you are well. There is one thing I can ‘guarantee’ to be true…If you do not believe that there are any benefits of using a crowned surface hone to sharpen a razor, you will NEVER be able to get satisfactory results attempting to use this method. For me, even though I keep trying, I was never able to properly learn to hone razors on flat stones, maybe I just never flattened them enough or one must possess exceptional skills or every user must have exceptional skills, reasoning and understanding of the process. I did have my most successful attempt on a really crappy Gold Dollar recently on an ILR hone. If you ever get around to making a YT video that can help me with my honing pursuits with flat stones, make sure to tag me in so I don’t miss it. We could discuss actual dates on when the use of convex hones was further, but I do have an antique commercial convex hone and strop from before 1870 as well as the US patent documentation dated 1843. I think you can find my video where I showcase that item.

      @@billm.2677 Bill, I know you had problems honing with flat stones and I can understand you doing something you are confident with and it works for you. However, science doesn't back up what you believe in my opinion. I have played around with convex honing on different styles of razors. I even bought a digital scope which links to my laptop so that I could see the bevel profile. I found it difficult getting the final bevel truly parallel with the undercut, and I did notice an improvement when shaving with a wedge razor. However, the amount of time, trouble and effort wasn't worth the improvement. I recently bought a NOS 13/16" Henckels Friodur 72. It's an early 70s razor, the design, shape and grind is excellent and the edge is sublime. Honing took a little longer than a standard carbon steel, but definitely worth it. I've had Henckels carbon steel razors in the past and found them to be an average German razor, the stainless steel version is far better. Hope you are well. All the best for the future.

      @@davec1768 Not being an engineer or scientist in honing method discussions, I mostly come from an artisan or craftsman like perspective. There IS an engineer in Norway who generally can be found using the screen name of his initials JPO. He is and engineer by education and profession as well as an experienced construction craftsman. He was the first person that I had ever seen shaping hones using a flexible diamond plate. His work inspired me to expand my work to similar pursuits, which I have been successful at. If you wish to discuss the mathematical and scientific aspects of why the use of a crowned surface hone works I would encourage you to look for some of his writings that can be found on a number of shaving related forums. He is far kinder and more eloquent than I could ever be, and even convinced one of the greatest Jarrod haters and anti-convex Honemaster Superiors to actually try it. As it turns out he equaled his current honing result on the first try. FWIW, JPO was the individual who published the German Grinders Handbook after he had gotten it translated to English. It is what he has based most of his successful convex honing practices upon. He is also an accomplished practitioner in the use of other honing tools and styles. For me, when it comes to the topic of precision and science in the Kingdom of Straight Razor Manufacturing, I have absolutely NO respect or admiration for ANY of them especially since modern measurement technology could be so easily applied but is NEVER used. Now, if you ask me for my evaluations based on skills and craftsmanship, that WOULD be a different story. Good luck with your Henckels Friodur 72, hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. A personal friend gifted me his Friodur 72 1/2 some time back which he expertly honed up on JNat stones. It is a wonderful razor. I have plenty of razors that I think shave in the same class if not a bit better. Even though there is no doubt in my mind that I would have no trouble matching shave performance on a re-hone using my very own method when it comes time to see the stones again, I’ll probably send it his way and pay him for re-honing. That way when I shave with it, I can always be reminded of his skill levels and our bond of friendship. Take care.
