The Phoenix Hawk L is the little brother who rolls into middle school and all the teachers say, "Oh you're the little brother of THAT kid?! Oh boy..." while rolling their eyes.
When I played the clix game I almost always ran two of these but I'd add the additional equipment of improved targeting on one and pulse on the other. It was a nasty combo.
Also remaking the Panther for the Dark Age? Take a basic 9R, drop a 175 XL engine in. Upgrades movement to 5/8 and saves 1.5 tons. Spend 0.5 tons to bring jump to 5. Remove 3 heat sinks, upgrade remaining 10 to double heat sinks. Remove PPC, Replace PPC with 2 Large Lasers. Add 1 ton of armor. For a variant of this variant remove the SRM-4 and ammo and replace with 3 medium lasers in the CT. This make this new Panther still a soldier mech, but its in-line with other light soldier mechs in the Dark Age.
Thanks for highlighting this Dark Age / Late Republic mech. I don't play in the Dark Age but I'm a big Phoenix Hawk fan and specifically the Project Phoenix variants, so I love this look. I appreciate the great effort in highlighting this era!
This is an... interesting take on the Pheloenix Hawk, to say the least. Not as batshit crazy ad the gloriously insane Phoenix Hawk IIc, but still one I find to be odd. I get the Combine wanted a light mech to replace another light mech... but I have to wonder why they didn't just upscale a Stinger or Wasp then. Oh well, interesting nonetheless. Also, I know it's lighter thanks to a lot of weight saving tech, but I can help but think that the biggest factor in making it lighter was it having an arm torn off and having a small weapon pod slapped on the stub. The poor sealing quirk isn't helping alleviate that thought lol.
My main thought about the Phoenix Hawk L is... it deserves a different name. This mech doesn't need to borrow a good reputation from a 45 ton mech. It can definitely stand on its own merits. Other than sharing the same movement profile, it shares very little with its namesake. The L is a decent mech, but honestly expensive for what is suppose to be a main line mech. All that weight saving components hit the pocketbook (and BV) and it all adds up.
I know what I said last night, but this thing sounds awesome! Honestly, even though I’m a bit of a FedSuns fanboy, and I despise the Kuritans (except for Theodore).. I must admit that, at least in some ways, the Dracs are pretty cool. In some ways!
Honestly it's not the worst, but I don't like to play emps, and tasers that can shutdown a mech. Thought yes it's very unlikely and hard to use, but none the less it's not a cool look in my eyes
What a cool mech. Very interesting design and two fascinating and varied diverse loadouts, all while wielded by my favorite house? Man, making me want to get into later eras.
Forgot to leave a comment the first time. 😝 This was a great video, very informative. It's proof that dark Age 'mechs can kick butt with new-gen tech upgrades. The Old Reliable Medium got re-made and re-branded as a burly and swift Light 'mech. The new P-Hawk is a great enemy 'mech hunter that can shoot its way through the era-fashionable combined force mini-armies to get to the enemy 'mech or 'mechs and take them down swiftly! If everything goes well, the Dracs get to capture some 'mechs in decent shape. If not, well, it'll be a quick kill nonetheless! If Katana Tormak had been given a dozen of these in 3132, she could've cleaned house on ROTS & Swordsworn alike. Tornaga's victories over determined FedSuns mechwarriors become a lot easier to understand once a player recognizes his 'mech battalions had some of these bad boys distributed to trustworthy pilots.
The Panther was a fantastic 'Mech before the Helm Memory Core was discovered. Afterwards it was a series of bafflingly bad upgrade packages which never really brought it into a viable state in later eras.
It explodes like a Gauss rifle if hit, and it works on 9+. Also, the shutdown is for one turn. It's also one of the most expensive BV weapons in the game.
I have always loved the Phoenix Hawk. Just a bad ass look and with a nice set of teeth too! I was wondering if an up-scaled model might be possible. Up tonnage to 55 from 45 to keep it as a Medium category, but give it some more weight to play with. Roll: Light Hunter, and Scout Use all the latest tech Armament: 2 ER Large Lasers (Left an right arms), 3 Medium Pulse Lasers (Left and right arms, center torso), 2 ER Small Lasers (Head) Mobility: Jump Jets paired with a Partial Wing System I'm aware that a a lot of yo are provably thinking Gundum instead of Mech at this point, but the OG Phoenix Hawk dose have that kind of vibe. I just liked the idea of pushing the design even more in that direction So I figured that with new tech it might be possible.
Great video! I didn't know anything about a PHX 35tonner, but the loadout on the 11K2 has gotta be one of my favorites I've seen on a light. The Dragon is pleased 🐉
To be fair, there are more than a few mechs with different arm configurations on both sides, that don't have the unablanced quirk. It's gotta be way more extreme than the PXH-11K to get that quirk usually.
How'd I mishear that the Raus Dominion made this thing? Either way I respect the Thorn arm layout for local garrison repairs.... even if they made it look like a power ranger and named it after the master chief mech.
Personally, to upgrade the Panther, I would've gone bigger Light Engine, MML 5, and dual Light PPCs with one equipped with a capacitor. I will definitely be working out how to do that. Edit: Alright, I've tinkered and toiled and here it is. Panther "Hreda" Engine: XL 175 Gyro: Standard Cockpit: Standard w/ Full Head Ejection System Structure: Standard Armor: 6.5T Ferro-Fibrous Movement: 5/8/4 Heat Sinks: 10 (20) Weapons & Equipment: CASE II (LT) 1 Light PPC w/ Capacitor (RA) 1 ER Medium Laser (RA) 1 Light PPC (CT) 1 MML5 (RT) 1T LRM Ammo (LT) 1T SRM Ammo (LT) 1 ER Small Laser (HD) 4 Standard Jump Jets --------------------- I tinkered a lot with engines, structures, and armor, but finally decided that a Panther ain't a Panther at 6/9 movement. I considered Composite structure, but there's enough expensive equipment on board as is. I might swap it out anyway and use that weight for more armor or a LFE for better survivability. Customizing light 'mechs is so much fun because you're so restricted by weight and you have to get inventive with your solutions.
You better hook up with Discount Dan, you are arguably the best mech salesman on youtube, I got a new light to pick up now for my mercs. (Just checked the availability list lol)

Ironically, the Atlas is pretty resilient to this thing, as its 100-tons, and 100-tonners actually get a +2 bonus against TSEMP. Any PXH-L that thinks its gonna piss on an Atlas, is gonna get pissed on. lol
I have a question since you brought up Clan Ghost Bear. Where did the Clans get the manpower to occupy their territorial gains in the Clan Invasion? Wouldn't they be fighting off partisans all the time?
Several of the Clans actually merged with their Inner Sphere holdings both militarily and politically, adapting to survive. Ghost Bear being one of the first as they merged with the FRR to become the Ghost Bear Dominion, and then continued to adapt and mesh the cultures to become the Rasalhague Dominion. Even in the IlClan era though, there are some partisans who think the Dominion should be out conquering instead of being content with what they have, I believe the book Dominions Divided cover that, and I am pretty sure Red has a video touching on it. Clan Snow Raven did something similar with the Outworlds Alliance to become the Raven Alliance. After they got the boot from the Clan home worlds Clan Goliath Scorpion conquered three different deep periphery realms and merged all of them together to form the Scorpion Empire.
@@Evinthal84 I know it did happen I'm more curious how they (more specifically the Jade Falcon and Wolf) held their occupation Zones with their supply lines so long and Culture so alien to the inhabitants of those areas.
@@Balevolt From my understanding all the invading Clans gave up their home world holdings (think Hell's Horses are the exception here) and moved everything to the Inner Sphere. As for holding their territories I don't think it would be that much different from another house taking over. For the most part the planetary governments were left to handle non-military matters. New boss is the same as the old boss pretty much.
During the initial Clan Invasion, each Clan brought 2 types of Forces; Main line Galaxies( Mostly Trueborns with Omni Mechs) and PGC''s(Provincenal Garrison Clusters( Second Line Mechs, too include IIC's, and depending on the Clan, mostly filled with Freeborns, and plenty of unarmored Infantry). The Frontline Galaxies did the main Invasion, while the PGC's covered the rear.
Hey there Red. I never used the Phoenix Hawk L, nor faced it on the tabletops. But I did watch your video and, of course, my 'itch' to fiddle around with it a bit took hold. So, I took the PHX-11K2 variant and did the following: Removed the MML-3 and its ammo. In its place, I mounted 5 MGs and an MG Array in the Left Arm, with a Half Ton of Ammo in the Left Torso (where the CASE is). I left the Coolant Pod in place, since it is possible to fire the Snub-Nosed PPC, both ER-Medium Lasers, and Jump, and exceed the 'heat delta' of the installed heat sinks. The 10 IS-DSHS can 'only' cool 20 heat, and with the above weapons use and jumping, the 'heat delta' would be 26. Using the Coolant Pod allows the heat sinks to outperform their 'normal' cooling rate by 50%, so a 'heat delta' of 30 cooling. Since the MGs generate no heat, it is not an 'issue', and with the MG Array, four of the five MGs will fire upon one target with one roll of the dice. Please note that a 6th MG could be installed instead. I don't know about you, but if I were infantry, I would be terrified of that much firepower pointed in my direction! All of this, without changing the 'essential' design. I just don't see the validity, or usefulness, of the MML-3 and its ammo. Yes, the MML-3 can fire LRMs as well as SRMs, but why would you NEED 3 missiles to 'enhance' your attack? This Mech was meant to be a 'cheap' to build, and easy to repair machine of war. The MML-3 just adds weight, and is a possible vulnerability. At least the MGs, all 6 of them, would be a 'force multiplier' when dealing with Infantry and Battle Armor. Heck, even Proto-Mechs would be wary of that many MGs. So, my conclusion is that the altered design (the 6MG variant), which I designate as the PHX-11K3, is a 'better' design. Feel free to disagree, if you wish.
Pretty sure it is Roc, as he specifically says "no, not the protomech", also given how it looks in the art he shows for it, it has wing like protrusions on the back and appears to be a heavy or assault mech, another hint is that he designed it to be a Marik mech. Basically all of that is one giant nod to the mythological Roc
What does Finikua Tasa translate as? (Probably butchered the Japanese spelling also but you know what I mean thanks). Great video on something I wasn't aware of.
The screen shot of the readout said 18 double heat sinks for 28 heat dissipation . Typos on the image . You were correct in the 10 for 20 dissipation .
This scripture you´re using on the overview sheet (8:01) is horrible, yes it looks cool, but you can´t differentiate between 0 and 8. But the mech looks cool, i don´t like that its missing the arm hpwever i LOVE the inclusion of a full-head ejection system, that should be in many more mechs. Second variant is quite the impressive damage dealer, i´m not exactly a fan of the capacitor, though the potential is undeniable.
@@BigRed40TECH No need to change the scripture, it just needs the 0 to lose that line in the middle making it looking like an 8. The A also look irritatingly like the 4 and vis verse, but it´s less troublesome than the 0/8 issue.
ah the combine place where they make pretty good mechs (with the exception of the OG dragon which is at best meh) but often meh tacticians and strategists. oh and terrible human rights. albeit when the DCMS has worthy leaders is a horrific foe to face. Mind you not sure why one would buy this design given it has a XL engine which means one can buy like 1.5 upgraded non XL phoneix hawks
C-bill costs don't really work as well, or aren't as accurate, after the 31st century to be fair. The C-bill cost system was meant for balance in the 90's and ceased really being truly functional once you hit the Dark Age.
"Fenikkusu" (フェニックス) would be better read like "fenix" or "fenixu" than "fennykoosoo." Yeah it's still not 100% accurate but it's easier to explain without getting deep into Japanese pronunciation.
@@BigRed40TECH agree to disagree. I liked those novels, but once they did the time skip and the Republic of the Sphere, it basically killed off everything I enjoyed about the Battletech universe.
I think the FCCW stretched logic to such a strain that even the Dark Age looks reasonable by comparison. It's just different tastes. I'd rather read something new, even if its imperfect, then read through a terrible, awfully paced nonsense filled series of books with the worst ending in Battletech history on every level. Ironically, how bad the FCCW is, made me more forgiving to Dark Age. lmao
@@BigRed40TECH I think that would be an interesting video topic (a comparison between the two). Personally, I saw a lot of the FCCW books as filler, but I enjoyed them as further explorations of the conflict. I enjoyed the final battles, but, in retrospect last space battle was too close to the Holdo maneuver. However, I didn't enjoy the resolution to the storyline. That's honestly probably why I don't like what came afterwards.

@@BigRed40TECH Poor Banshee, just looking forlorn right under the threshold. A little tear coming down from under his shades.
Is the stone rhino vid out yet?
th-cam.com/video/W2F2e1VqJEE/w-d-xo.html
It's the biggest video on the channel. lol
@bigred40tech roc or rock? also will we be expecting a sheet soon?
The sheet's on the discord.
Not a clue lol
So.... A new version of the Valkyrie.
Valk is more of an LRM boat, and a slow one. The PXH-11K definitely doesn't fit that descriptor.
I just realized it is also only 30 tons too. I confused the 3025 Valkyire for a modded one with a PPC in a home campaign years ago. @@BigRed40TECH
or was it a large laser... can't remember
Not feeling this one tbh. It'd not bad its just feels of to me.
Nasty little cuss.
a classic
i confused it with its older heavyer ancestor
thanx for the info sempi
Yes, shutdown has bean initiated 😅
What music were you playing in background? And where did you find it?
The screen shot of the readout said 18 double heat sinks for 28 heat dissipation . Typos on the image . You were correct in the 10 for 20 dissipation .
It actually doesn't. It's just the font.
L? Where are A and M?
No LAMs here friend. lol
@@BigRed40TECH I beat the Crecent Hawk's Inception I earned it! Fuck Harmony Gold!
It's a cute little thing.
"Go go power Phoenix!"
I personally don't have a problem with it, and as I've mentioned before, its literally easier to use than the old script. It won't be changing. :)
@@BigRed40TECH No need to change the scripture, it just needs the 0 to lose that line in the middle making it looking like an 8.
The A also look irritatingly like the 4 and vis verse, but it´s less troublesome than the 0/8 issue.
Phoenix Hawk L? More like The Phoenix Hawk takes an L!
ah the combine place where they make pretty good mechs (with the exception of the OG dragon which is at best meh) but often meh tacticians and strategists. oh and terrible human rights. albeit when the DCMS has worthy leaders is a horrific foe to face.
Disappointing that we aren't talking about the PXH-4L or 5L
But at least it isn't Davion
Can't decide what is more cringe: DCMS weeb shit or the Dark Age
You misspelled FCCW, it's not spelled as Dark Age.
