The Tempest art is one of my favorite TRO:3055 for the Inner Sphere. The IWM miniature is actually pretty cool too. I wouldn’t mind giving this mech a whirl in the future.
Despite being a League Fan and enjoying many mechs in TRO 3055 I have to admit I never really looked twice at the Tempest I’ll have to give it a try in my Megamek campaign. Great video!
I’ve been waiting for this one! The Tempest has been one of my all-time favorite ‘Mechs! Back in the day, when I (briefly) had a Mechwarrior 2 character, he piloted a Tempest.
Love the Tempest, one of my favorites of the era. If I had one in a unit I'd field mod it to swap the large pulse out for an ERPPC, but unmodified it's still a great updated trooper.
Ah, the tempest. It's been my above all favorite mech for nearly 30 years now, ever since I got into the BT universe. It's got a unique combo of looking beefy yet sleek, it's got jump jets, a hard hitting weapon for every range bracket (including my fav gauss rifle), armored and also just for icing on the top a turret mounted laser to fire behind it. It's got everything. Alot of BT fans might only look at it from a TT perspective, but this mech shines in my book
The Tempest is a great trooper mech. Nobody should mind having a full lance of these as the core of their battle line. Now that said... let me rage against the Inner Sphere Large Pulse Laser. The Tempest 3MA should have a variant where the LPL is replaced with a standard PPC. And this is a direct upgrade. Why is it an upgrade? Both produce the same heat. Both have the same tonnage. The PPC does 1 more damage. The LPL receives a -2 to hit bonus in all range brackets... but thanks to the ridiculously small range brackets of the Inner Sphere LPL this benefit only kicks in at a range of 1-3 hexes, when the opponent manages to get inside of your PPC's minimum range. You can argue that the IS LPL is better for a mech that will get into brawling range, but this mech has a SRM6 and jump jets it can employ when you can't use the PPC. It isn't a perfect solution, but I think the extra range you gain from the PPC makes a huge difference. Paired with the Gauss Riffle it nearly doubles the Tempest's long range firepower. Getting in a few more early hits will help significantly in close range battles. All in all, I see the standard PPC as a straight upgrade to the IS LPL. Now that flips when talking about the clan LPL. The clan LPL is an improved standard PPC. Nearly same everything except its 1 ton lighter and more accurate at all range brackets with no minimum range. That is just clan tech for you. And I'd absolutely recommend the clan LPL over a clan ERPPC, though the clan ERPPC does have its merits. Enough that some pilots will be willing to juggle more of a heat burden to get that extra head clipping weapon.
While I need to think about it for a while, it seems that you are correct in principle. But doesn't the FWL have a tradition of lacking sufficient PPCs and installing large lasers in their place?
@@stuartwald2395 That would be true during the 3rd succession war, but we're talking about 3055. Standard PPCs are in much greater supply than reintroduced Star League era weapons.
I would love to see the planned two PPC design because I suspect it would either meet all the criteria for my favorite designs (Heavy weight class, all energy weapons, jump jet equipped) or be easily modded to match them.
Let's see if I can outdo the Tempest-C. The version I made has a Light Gauss Rifle in the right arm, with one ton of ammo PLUS A CASE 2 (no more Gauss explosions)! The left arm has a Large VSP Laser (both for range, accuracy, and anti-infantry ability). The SRM is dropped, while the Medium Lasers are Clan-tech ER versions. Last, but not least, there are 13 Double Heat Sinks to try and keep the Mech cool. Just leaving out a Medium Laser after an Alpha Strike will help to control heat, so this should hold its own over the Tempest-C version.
Great vid, not sure how I feel about it being so similar to the Anzu, but it a great weapons package that adds adds mobility through jump jets as opposed to straight base speed.
Ah. That's a neat little ride. Explosive, yes. But neat. I first laid eyes on it in the card game that came out eons ago. Would like to see more of it.
so... its a fast heavy with a large laser, a long-range ballistic punch and missiles.... did they make this to make the Lyrans mad? it would explain the SRM's & jump jets on it, what with making it legally distinct from the Zeus and all
Love this mech. The 3M has just enough armor to make the XL engine... palatable but with the srm ammo and gauss rifle... I wouldn't want to pilot one. The 4M however might be a perfect heavy trooper mech. Jump 5 is by FAR the most important defensive bonus, on top of good armor, perfect cooling, incredible damage, great range, and the criticals are layed out in such a way that it is significantly more difficult to crit out the engine when compared to similar XL heavy designs.
22:20 How does one determine if something is getting Clan free case? (I know video game mods have "Clan Standard plating" as something alongside Clan Ferro to give the bufff but I don't know how TT does it.
@BigRed40TECH while the earlier versions are just as bad I find the 7M to be the nearest equivalent to the Tempest as it shows up in this timeframe and the inclusion of a Case a very intelligent choice. Now a pre-lostech upgrade Tbolt that is quite fair
I dont know if its cuz i don't play tabletop but my classification of what a good mech is or isn't, is very different. People swear the marauder is a great mech but its such a ez target when it isn't looking right at you. but that same logic makes the Bushwacker really hard to hit its core. I don't know I think the MWO and MW3-5 have ruined me to the nuance.
In terms of the carrier vehicles video, I'd ask you to not forget the fuston-powered LB-AC version from Historical: Liberation of Terra, Vol 2. It's a good look at how the SLDF adapted and while Battletech isn't real life, the amount of adaptation in current military matters makes this tracked AC carrier worth a look, IMO.
Drop the SRM launcher and the ammo, that would free up enough tonnage to swap the XL for a light engine and CASE to protect against the Gauss getting crit hit and overloading. Personally i like the Tempest, sadly there is only one novel where it got any presence at all that i´m aware of. Art looks solid, it has the typical Matt Plog short legs, a rework adressing this would be nice, but is, at least for now, not necessary IMO.
Great video Red! Only comment I would make is for the 4M version - you sacrifice a lot of firepower to increase the jump distance 1 hex. And while you do get the -3 TMM, you also have the same negative modifier on your shots for jumping, and you lose the pulse laser bonus. Way too much to give up for a slight increase in jump range IMO.
@@BigRed40TECH Agreed! But you also have the same -3 to hit with your weapons. Any turn my opponent has a gauss rifle that jumps I consider it a victory for me. You really need to make those shots count.
For the time of it´s construction the Tempest 3M is a very solid design without major flaws. In my experience the biggest drawback is the price. The battle value is very high for what it can actually do. The Tempest 3M is basically a decently mobile Gauss Rifle with some appropriate support weapons. Unfortunately the range of the support weapons is short. When entering a brawl the Tempest has to be careful to shield it´s back. While the armor on the front is excellent. The thin back armor and the XL enige make it vulnerabel to flanking attacks. A minor drawback is the fact that it is quite helpless against infantry. Given that this Mech is ideal for fighting in urban areas it surprises that it lacks anti-infantry weapons. The only option would be flechette ammo for the SRM-6 launcher.
A respectable design, but looking at the C config makes me wish they well all the way for clan grade endo steel and XL engines, possibly even a clan built chassis for the free CASE to mitigate those 2 tons of ATM ammo that are likely going to be standard and/or high ex in most deployments.
ah the FWL in the 3050s and 3060s. truly a good place and time to be a mech designer. just don't ask why the WOB technical advisors are often laughing evilly a lot of the time. I'm sure it will be just fine right?
I never liked the tempest it's weapons load-out always seemed confused to me. It would make sense with an ERPPC instead of the Pulse Laser OR with an AC-20 in place of the Gauss Rifle.
The Gauss Rifle's meant to be an all-range weapon, giving it teeth at range, and then as it gets in closer the other weapons step in. It makes a lot of sense imo. It's a trooper through and through.

Comparison to Thunderbolt: Large laser replaced with a pulse and LRM replaced with a GAUSS RIFLE!
Thanks for the video! I love this series.
The Tempest is a good all-rounder, though at a premium grade. It would be greatly benefitted with CASE II.

This was a pretty fair look at my lore, strengths, and weaknesses. Good stuff!
My very first mech. Loved everything about it
It seems like a minor benefit till someone crams a Clan ERLL into that singe head turret critical slot. Then it becomes a Moderate benefit.
Love the thump, fearing the fragile on this thing. The look with it's swivel turret head is pretty cool though.
I’m going to have to get one of these for my Spirit Cats.
The Tempest has quite the Temper😘
I have always adored this mech!

Different manufacturers. Remember, Irian, which makes this, was apart of the ROTS when the Anzu was made by the MSC.

@@BigRed40TECH Interesting.
@@DIEGhostfish That sweet sweet Inner Sphere Endo Steel can't fit those poor quality Clan CASE systems onboard :P
@@BigRed40TECH Interesting. More down to the structure than the armor like videogames make it.

An XL engine with all that volatile gauss ammunition? :o
Hmmmm. I do personally prefer the T Bolt for a frontliner, but that is mostly on a BV cost and lack of quite so many explosive components.
The Thunderbolt has almost as many explodee bits though lol
