One my favorites. This thing is terrific, light mech that punches way above its weight class. Love weapon platform mechs, especially the little guys. Like the Kit Fox with a gauss or an Urbanmech with an AC/20, it is simply good times.
As someone who despises ammunition based weaponry with some minor exceptions (ac-2, lrms, and ac-20) I find myself actually liking this mech…yes it uses ammunition, yes it has a bomb strapped to the mech in the form of the Gauss rifle. Regardless of all that, much like the AC-20 the fight ending potential of the Gauss rifle via headshot makes this mech always a worthwhile choice. Honestly the only upgrade I would consider on the mech is the addition of an xl engine (normally a very bad idea) and reinvesting the saved weight into a bigger engine in order to give it more speed.
Needs an ECM, which is going to cost tonnage. Suggest installing a Light Gyro, and possibly downgrading to a Light Cockpit. Although the Stealth system may well trap enough heat that you might be forced to install DHS.
This would be very good for hull down ambushes too. That gun can pop over a hill, lock and fire, then drop down the reverse slope and change position. aka tank tactics.

@@noppornwongrassamee8941 But part of the problem of too much mass is that the legs might not be capable to support it. And since legs move one by one, the engine/reactor being too small-bore would also be no problem - even more so when you can actually support _more_ mass and thus, a heavier reactor with an additional leg.
My favorite Hollander refits are the ones that stuff it full of Clan weapons and electronics on an IS frame. A Clan ER PPC, a pair of Clan SSRM2s and a ton of ammo, IS TAG, Clan ECM/Probe, and a Clan Targeting Computer with IS Endo, maxed out Ferro, and Double Heat Sinks is a ferocious hunter-killer for under 3.5m C-bills. You could drop the electronics for a bigger engine or jump jets if you're into that, but I prefer them.
Bless Coventry Metal Works and whatever shipment of good stuff helped them conceptualize a light 'mech with only one weapon, but making it the absolute best weapon ever designed. Not sure if they slipped off the tight rope to the side of madness or genius, but either way, what a machine. Also, my first experience with the Hollander II was in Mechwarrior Living Legends. And I loved that thing.
Maintenance Tech: "For the last time we cannot reinstall your Hollander's Gauss Rifle from a shoulder mounting to hip mount. If you feel that inadequate buy a big truck or something like everyone else!"
Forgot this thing even existed, but I do remember someone saying that my 4 legged 100 ton Artillery/Aim support mech resembled it. I can see why and honestly I can tell where and why this thing would shine the brightest. Definitely something you want to use to protect your Artillery and hold the line at bay/coral the enemy as you pound then with the heavy stuff.
eventually I plan on rebuilding all of the TRO's Innershpehe mechs into full clan tech rebuilds. The Hollander will be on that list, and I'm already thinking of how I'd configure it. endo-steel, fero-fiberous, Clan XL, jump jets, Clanner Gauss Rifle, 2t ammo, and if there is any tonnage remaining, a few erml's and DHS for 'backup' I wonder if there'll be enough tonnage for a Targeting Computer?
I was bored and made a 60-ton Hollander IV variant. Same signal Gauss Rifle, and 2 tons of ammo, the improvements are an IS 325 Light Engine, 4 improved Jump Jets, compact Gyro, and armor marked up to 10 tons. For the cost of 11,320, 960 c-bills. This was funny because a friend of mine runs a VTTG and the players have 80-ton Clan mechs. They were stomping his missions. So he threw my Hollander IV at them and clipped two of the players 80-ton mechs out of their cockpits and they were forced to retreat from the mission for the first time. Thanks to the two clan mechs, They were stripped for another upgraded variant of the Hollander IV Variant. With a Clan XL 325 Engine, Clan endo steel, and Ferro-Fibrous, (Which knocked the tonnage usage down to 52 out of 60 tons and Crit slots to 63 out of 78.) With new C-DHS, C-Gauss rifle, 3 C-MED Pulse Lasers, and ECM. The mech's heat/cooling: 16/20 Thanks to these recovered Clan mechs, it was enough to retrofit 4 Hollander IV's mechs! lol, and yes they went up against the players and won 4 times in a row before the players just gave up on the mission to capture/destroy a HPG outpost. Out of the 4 retrofits on one was destroyed and another mech was half destroyed.
For me I think the Hollander is the reason why I have always had a love a single weapon platform mechs. Though for me at least I always want to strip one down so I can shove a Long Tom on the mech and keep it even further away from the enemy.
I remember picking up TRO 3055 back in the 90's and when I first gazed upon the Hollander and its Gauss rifle, my first thought was " Because we fucking can! ". Also a much better design than the Thunder.😜
Interesting stuff. I only knew of the Hollander as Sarna mentions the Blitzkrieg (a favourite of mine) as a replacement for the Hollander. I like the asymmetrical look of the Hollander👍
Faced a periphery force in BTA3062 featuring a Hollander variant with a Sniper Cannon. It rocked my Locust’s rear armor on a miss and caused me some inconvenience. And then it accidentally shot it’s own ally, a Panther… right in the back. The Panther survived but a little more punishment from me coerced the pilot into ejecting.
First time going over the TRO, the Hollander and the Venom became favorites that I would pair together. Even painted a company of mechs with those two in green and gold. At the time I didn't know anything about the factions and countered protests from my more learned battletech player by claiming it was a mercenary unit.
I recently had one of these in BTA 3062. It kicked a serious amount of ass for a long time until I got a royal champion with a gauss rifle. Only popped a few cockpits with it over 40 or so missions, but that thing had a hatred for right arms. You could be on the left side of a cicada and still remove the right arm. The Hollander: Because the urban mech is too slow, and the hunchback can't find AC20 ammo.
Hollander a good though niche weapons platform, I love deploy it in urban combat pair with some cheap bodyguard non mech ideally or in a position with other long range assets dug in, outside of that fire and maneuver. One time during a slog of a campaign loss the gauss rifle and replaced it with a AC 10, and then AC 5 when ammo ran dry for the 10. Performed very well, typically I would think about messing with the mech but this is one of the few mechs I wouldn't mess with if not forced to. Fighting it went against a Hollander Ace that was very unpleasant day saving grace it ran out of ammo and withdrew. The mech is an example of Lyran's making some of the best mechs outside of the heavier tonnage everyone sees them for.
I remember my first time whit the hollander. Going from: the hell is this thing to holly hit it just one shot an atlas. Ever since then it will have my respect. The hollander is one of the few mech that have the "honor" of being kill on sight no mather what
Innovation: AKA: Slap a gauss rifle on it. Just gauss rifle, just gauss rifle. Also make sure the Ammo can be quickly and easily ejected to make sure the machine doesn't suffer an internal ammo explosion.
Currently playing a Battletech tabletop rpg. My merc company will probably be needing to buy a couple. Currently caught in the invasion corridor and all our guass rifles are on assault mechs. Through some AMAZING luck, we have a King Crab with double guass instead of the normal ac20. We were paid for one mission with a Royal SLDF Nightstar, a true relic with 2 guass rifles. And finally, we were scouted by some shady folks (probably Comstar) and had to duel the Dragoons. We beat them and forced a surrender. (Only 2 Dragoon pilots suvived engaging us) We got a Mad 5b out of it.
I remember when TR3055 was released and loved this mech. I would put a pair in a Support Lance with a couple Grim Reapers. Lots of Long-Range Destruction! Especially if they are piloted by Mechwarriors with high gunnery.

@Nopporn Wongrassamee plus there just wasn't rules for that when thus was made canon.
Great Video, BIg Red. I'm now the proud owner of two Hollanders. =)
Love this mech. Favorite mech since I first discovered it in Mechcommander 2
I have a 3d printed Hollander that I painted like Seras Victoria from Hellsing Ultimate.
"B------ love cannons"
Brings new meaning (and unease) to "sniper squad".
The Hollander will be on that list, and I'm already thinking of how I'd configure it.
endo-steel, fero-fiberous, Clan XL, jump jets, Clanner Gauss Rifle, 2t ammo, and if there is any tonnage remaining, a few erml's and DHS for 'backup'
I wonder if there'll be enough tonnage for a Targeting Computer?
Part of the reason the Hollander is the way it is, is because its cheap XD
@BigRed40k part of the reason I'm single, is I am cheap...
This one sounds like a lot of fun to play on the tabletop.
What is my purpose?
To hurl chunks of metal
Oh my god
I feel like the Recoil of the gauss rifle would send the mech toppling over when in the pose from the artwork lol
Awesome job. Tho I've never had great success playing the Hollander in games I've had much fun making opponents sweat it's head clipping ability
I really enjoy using my Hollander2 in MW5. Still in the beginning of the campaign on the DC/Rasalhague border.
Great video! I don't know why, but I've always had a sweet spot for the Hollander. 👍
Proof that the Lyrans are not alway incompetent and infact have some amazing light assets.
They built the Commando back in the early days.
@@bthsr7113 And the wonderful Wolfhound. A light mech par excellence.
I made one of these but with Clan tech using the Cougar in MWO, only addition it got was ECM.
Great Video, thanks! Sure would love a CGL miniature for this mech.
I think we'll see one within a couple years.
For me I think the Hollander is the reason why I have always had a love a single weapon platform mechs. Though for me at least I always want to strip one down so I can shove a Long Tom on the mech and keep it even further away from the enemy.
Yeah! Finally my favorite light mech!
Gotta respect the Gauss Rifle, even if it's the only thing the mech carries.
Nice light mech.
I've been replaying Mech Commander 2, and gotta say your video making me give it more respect than I had been in ignoring it.
I'm liking the artwork of the Hollander used in this video
Always liked the Hollander in TT...
Replaced the Gauss with Light Gauss, ammo up, armor up, and get to work. 😎👍
I just remember it as being THAT Mech from the first mission of Mech Commander so many restarts 😂
The hollander is one of the few mech that have the "honor" of being kill on sight no mather what
I love this mech so much now. Thank you.
It's a cannon on two legs...I love it!
Innovation: AKA: Slap a gauss rifle on it. Just gauss rifle, just gauss rifle.
Also make sure the Ammo can be quickly and easily ejected to make sure the machine doesn't suffer an internal ammo explosion.
Loved this thing in mech commander. Was always fun yeeting kit foxes across the map lol
Blackwell is a good artist and my favorite company located on Outreach.
This is like what I would have built if Mechwarrior was Chromehounds.
Now I know what I need 3D printed for my in game shipping company. Blast those pirates before they even get to see the loot they're after!
I always re-roll my starting mechs when beginning a new BTA playthrough until i get a Hollander. Dekker gets it and i make sure he don't ever die.
Ah the Hollander. Doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. Good, honest mech design.
I'm surprised they didn't center the weapon on quad legs, or something similar for stability. Hell, make an eight leg spider mech.
It needs too many crit spaces to put on a quad frame. Lose FF and you could do it
@@joecosta2645 Then it becomes even more fragile.
@@bthsr7113 true, but it would be the only way to make it a quad. Reminds me of the Hussar in that regard
Gun on legs is peak mech design aesthetic.
Battlemech embodiment of monitor ship principles.
I remember when TR3055 was released and loved this mech. I would put a pair in a Support Lance with a couple Grim Reapers. Lots of Long-Range Destruction! Especially if they are piloted by Mechwarriors with high gunnery.
Brutal.
I like this mech so much I did a pirate Frankenmench knockout of it using Javelin chassis with a Shadow Hawk shoulder cannon (MW5).
FYI, the newly released Record Sheets: 3150 has the sheet for the BZK-G2 Hollander.
Yea, I saw. Hilarious isn't it? lol
