The 'box' Mido had in front of her had the same photo album that Daesu saw. That's why Daesu went through everything to try to stop the box from opening.
Man, kudos to you watching movies with your mum. I could never do it without breaking into sweat considering all the movies that are out there and watching some of these with my wife is borderline uncomfortable 😅
Oh man, I don't want to clog up the comment section. But there are a LOT of fantastic videos on TH-cam breaking down any questions or theories you might have on this film. If you are curious about the remake, YMS did an amazing compare/contrast of why the Korean original worked and why the remake failed critically as well as commercially. Oh and quick blurb about the villain. That actor was only 29 at time of shooting. So there was a 15 year age gap between the 2 leads. Director Park Chan-Wook thought it was great that he looked so young compared to Oh Dae-Su. Lee Woo Jin is essentially trapped in his youth while Dae-Su can only age while regressing mentally. The director says he's ok with the ending scene being up to interpretation due to all leading to one thing: Lee Woo-Jin utterly destroyed Oh Dae-Su. Whether you're in the camp of "Oh Dae-Su had his memory wiped" or "Oh Dae-Su still remembers", he's still living in isolation with his daughter, who became his lover. Lee Woo-Jin kills himself because he knows he broke Dae-Su forever. The popular theory is that the hypnotist botched the final hypnosis. It's not the monster who knows the secret that perished. It's the remaining humanity in him that got erased. That final look could be read as him either smiling or crying. Either way, it goes back to the poem from the beginning: "Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Weep, and you end up weeping alone."
Since you mention that Oh, Dae-soo is like Korean John Wick, you should check out 'The Man from Nowhere' (another S. Korean movie from 2010) whose main character is the real inspiration for John Wick (officially acknowledged by the director of JW)
33:00 she said "i love you, mr." instead of "i love you, dae-soo". the korean script was "사랑해요, 아저씨" so i assume that she's in a stage where she accept the huge age difference between them and trying to / slowly falling in love with him. on his side, tho, is different. the hypnotist warned him that things could go wrong and mess up his head, memories could get tangled. i couldn't be too sure whether it was him or the monster who have survived at the end. when he heard "i love you, mr." he smiled weakly, but than his weak smile slowly gets bitter and i could see he's in pain, so i'd say it's an open ending. 1 - he could be dae-su, or 2 - he could be the monster. he may or may not remember his past, depend on the audience's own interpretations, i guess 👥
oh man I will never forget the first time I watched this story fold out.... Left me with this lingering feeling of discomfort for days. Great film though, cinematography and story telling wise. Def one of those that you have to see at least once (especially since its pretty hard to forget what you see after o_0)
I remember watching it in 2009 for the first time. It was one of those movies that actually had my jaw on the floor for like the last 20 minutes straight. It stayed like that and I just sat in shock, even after the credits were finished, then I continued just sit there for a good while. SO GOOD but SO messed up...Very few movies have ever had that effect on me.
Excellent reaction. So, this movie is part of a trilogy, the other two being "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Lady Vengeance". I hope to see reactions to those two as well. All three are very different stylistically from each other, but share the theme of vengeance.
When I first saw this movie my favourite part was the warscream that Oh Dae-su made when he gets to know the truth. That was the strongest feelable emotion of him which the viewer can totally sympathize. Everybody would do the same. And that moment he went to total berserker mode.
That might be my favorite part too. The emotional gut wrenching punch of a revelation really makes you feel for Oh Dae Su, and it really hits most when he gets tossed over by Mr Han followed and the whole scene gets drowned out by the piano track which really sums up the severity of the trauma Oh Dae Su has been through at the hands of Lee Woo Jin.
To give you a little backstory on this masterpiece, there's a Japanese manga of the same name that was the main inspiration for the movie. The story goes that the producer of the movie showed the original Manga to Actor Choi and Director Park to see how they would adapt it into a movie before there was any pre-production or anything decided, but Choi only read up to the second volume and put it away because it was too boring. However, Park loved the idea of 15 years of confinement and the private prison setting so much that he told them to throw everything else away and give him a month to adapt the rest of the story, and the movie was born. Park and the producer then went to the Japanese publisher of the original Manga and bought the movie rights, which was a very low price compared to the enormous stature of the movie, and the Japanese were said to be quite bitter.
IMMEDIATE like, comment, subscribe, and respect for reacting to this film! And as mother and son no less! Having watched it previously, I'd never show this to a parent lol. This film got me into Korean cinema and more crazy/disturbing foreign films in general. I'd NEVER had a reaction to another film before like I did the first time I watched this movie. Can't wait to finish watching your reactions!
I also recommend Lady Vengeance, director Park Chan-wook's film after Oldboy. Because it is particularly difficult to watch a review video of this movie, I want to watch a review video.haha
Sympathy For Mr Vengeance is as good and cruel IMO. With two fantastic actors, Song Kang-Ho (maybe the most famous korean actor) and Bae-Doo-Na (same for the women).
For a totally different Korean movie, check out the #1 romcom of all time My Sassy Girl 2001. It's been remade countless times, there's even a US version.
I once heard cool ending explanation based on colors. In that scene one Oh Dae Su is in green color correction (like he was the whole movie) and the other one that was broken by Yu Jiin - in purple. And the one in green color correction left. So he forgot not all the evening, but about about incest. Cause that's the part that is connected with purple box.
A key point: in the end he used the hypnotist to forget that she is his daughter. So now he doesn't know, and she never learned, and they can be together
@@huntersting17 the final decision is what gives it depth and makes it akin to an ancient Greek tragedy. Without it it's just a more disturbed version of a run of the mill revenge story
my opion I think the final hypnosis failed. 1.film dones't show memory monster die. 2.the final tape cut off midway, . 3.his facial expression was very complicated when his daughter hugged him.
@@驰张-z6h "1.film dones't show memory monster die."yes, it does. It shows it dropping down. The hypnosis never failed before in the movie, why would it fail now? I think the final expression is just portraying the ambivalence in "ignorance is bliss"
Greatest revenge movie of all time, there's a lot of great revenge movies but none hit quite like Oldboy, the moment you realise that you're not watching Dae-su's revenge but the brothers, just disturbingly brilliant. Credit to everyone involved in the making of it, but don't watch the abomination that is the Hollywood remake.
No, this is part two in the vengeance trilogy. I actually like part one and three better. "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance" and "Lady Vengeance". The remake sucks.
If Oh Dae Su was female, he would be a mediocre mom that, through surviving torture and sacrificing her life, body, and soul for her kid became the bravest and best mom of all time. Rightfully so. But since he is male...well.....I haven't heard any best dad ever reviews of Old Boy

There was in fact a 15 year statute of limitations on murder when this was made. Its since been abolished
One of the greatest films ever. A Masterpiece.

The movie that gives the most twisted version of the line,
"You got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all."
Fun fact: Oh Dae-Su's actor Choi Min-sik is Buddhist and a vegetarian. They had to make 4 takes on the octopus eating scene.

Parsite vs Oldboy.
Definitely Oldboy
Both great films, but, Oldboy is in a league of its own.
While Parasite had a strong commercial feel, Oldboy is an artistic brutal fairy tale film.
