My favorite Shyamalan movie. That dinner table scene is just outstanding, and no one can play devastation like Mel Gibson. He's a man absolutely terrified for his family, overwhelmed and he can barely hold it together, but he has to be the strong one for all their sakes. That scene gets me every time.
The great thing about M. Night's movies, is that the role of children in his movies is always equally great as the adults. He really trusts them to do a great job and not just use them as a filler. They always have great lines and are in the foreground, not the background. Check out The Village next!
Fun fact: Joaquin Phoenix was the last person to be cast in this film. Mark Ruffalo was originally cast to play his character, but was forced to bail just weeks before filming began due to needing an emergency surgical procedure to remove a cyst in his ear. Production reached out to Joaquin Phoenix, thinking there was no way he'd have a clear schedule to film this on such late notice. But Phoenix, who absolutely loved the film "The Sixth Sense," was thrilled about the opportunity to work with both M. Night Shyamalan and Mel Gibson, and gladly accepted. Cool little nugget.
It's not a popular opinion, but my favorite M.Night movie is The Village. Another one that has Joaquin Phoenix, and very emotionally driven, but also intense. Great actors too!
@practicaldreamyr JL over on EOM Reacts recently did it. Check that out if you haven't already And I hope Jen & Nick add it to their list too. I think they'd enjoy it.✨️
"Which camp are you in?" One thing you guys kindof touched on but didn't seem to get the whole concept was that this wasn't an "Alien movie".. the Alien's were just the vehicle used to transport the actual story of Mel Gibson's character and loss of faith. That's why the movie only focused on this little family in middle of Pennsylvania, and why there were so many closeups.. Also why the concept of Aliens and showing them was so drawn out.. and even when they were finally briefly shown, there wasn't really after a major lead up.. M. Night's character just nonchalantly said "I caught one in my pantry". Not the biggest reveal one would expect from a movie. So, in fact, the ambiguity you mentioned NOT being in this movie and not "leaving it to the viewer", was actually the whole story. It was all in Mel Gibson's talk to Merril middle of the night talking about "what camp are you in".. when talking about losing his faith. So are you in the camp of believing that Mel's wife's dying words were just synapses firing off just how the movie showed , or the odd record Merril had in baseball as being someone who "felt it was wrong to not swing".. giving him both the record of most hits/most misses.. or Abigail's issues with tap water and being oversensitive to it's taste making her constantly leave glasses around, or the fact that Morgan happened to have Asthma all being pure coincidences? BC without the vehicle of "Aliens".. none of these situations would ever be considered as something divine and could just be mere "humanity". Or are you in the camp of Signs. that all those very normal "human quirks" were part of something bigger.. Signs of something divine, all those little situations being part of something that would matter put together like ending with the saving of both Morgan's life due to his asthma, and Mel's return to church? So the ambiguity is very much there. It's just a matter of which perspective you view the movie.
One of my all time favourite films. So much so that my dad woke me up and said "come down for some breakfast and that Canadian mum and son reaction channel you like watched Signs" 😂
some people took issue with this movie because of the entire water thing, water being the alien's weakness, however it never bothered me. If these beings have never encountered water then they may not have known that water was a weakness for them or maybe they were desperate enough to risk it.
Especially if it's true that they were actually harvesting humans and didn't plan to be here for an extended period of time. People that criticized the water thing seem to forget just how many times humans put themselves into dangerous and fatal situations for the sake of exploration, survival, entertainment, sustenance etc.
THANK YOU!.. I felt the same way. Perhaps on their planet they have another form of liquid thats compatible to their sustenance. I never took issue with the water as well. They were harvesting Humans. And in a bunch of reactions sometimes people miss the fact that this movie is ALL about Signs. 1. Crop Circles - Pending Alien Invation 2. Mothers Prophesy after getting hit with car. 3. Fathers losing faith (all of these things had to happen to reassure his Faith in God - most likely stronger than ever like Job in the bible) 4. Forgot to write before when they showed the corn fields and you said “Look out for Jasmine!” I was thinking “Look out for shoeless Joe !”(Field of Dreams!)
It’s refreshing to hear you guys laughing during this, this movie is so much funnier than people give it credit for and a lot of reactors don’t seem to find it funny during a first time watch. Understandable but I think the humor is so good and consistent it’s nice to see it appreciated
First of all, I wish to go on record as a former film critic of my local city newspaper, that there are only 2 films of M.Night Shyamalan that are total duds: "The Lasr Airbender" and "After Earth." These films didn't really work out for him because I don't think he was well prepared within himself to do the genre(s) of both films. "The Village," "Lady in the Water" ( which is a beautiful fairy tale film which has a twist), "The Happening" ( a sci/fi ecological disaster film), "The Visit," "Split," "Glass," "Old," and "Knock at the Cabin" are essentially very fine films. The problem is this cult of haters who really don't know what filmmaking is about, the concept of story arcs, character arcs ,the palettes of color the director and cinematographer choose are just some of the reasons why I think M. Night's movies are so good. There's more to his stories than just about a twist but there are twists in his films. You just got to use your undivided attention to the film and let the movie speak to you to your ears and eyes or else you will miss a lot. Otherwise, I loved your reaction. I watch this film during the Halloween season which includes "The Mist," "Them!," "War of the Worlds" ( this year it's the Spielberg version), and the original 1969 "Night of the Living Dead." Don't listen to the haters. Don't read IMDB or Rotten Tomoatoes. Judge for yourself. Enjoy the Halloween season, folks.
I think most people just try to be edgy and jump on M.Night Shyamalan hate train without actually watching most of his movies. I guarantee most of them haven't even seen any movie from him and just make fun of him because he's Indian (Reddit is a good example of that).
Morgan's loss of faith in his father mirrors his father's loss of faith in the Heavenly Father; parents model behavior to their children and teach them how to interpret their world. You see this vividly in Morgan telling his dad "I hate you!" and his dad trying to manage Morgan's potentially deadly asthma with the very same words directed at God. Some interesting facts: -Family is very important to Shyamalan; you can tell in his storytelling. It's important enough to him that he makes all his films within the boundaries of the state of Pennsylvania, where he lives, just so he can go home to his family every night. -The first day of shooting this film was September 11, 2001: 9/11. Shooting was disrupted by the news of the planes hitting the Twin Towers in NYC and further disrupted by the crash of Flight 93 in a field in Pennsylvania as the hijacked plane was forced down by its passengers while enroute to Washington, DC. These events lent an unexpected sense of global terror that must have soaked into the cast and its filming. -The scene with Ray Ready evacuating in his car was filmed shortly after the death of Shyamalan's very beloved grandfather, which had to have colored his performance and possibly Mel Gibson's as well. Personally, I think M Night Shyamalan is more of a genius than most people give him credit for. How he tells stories, more of inner landscapes of the mind/heart/spirit than exterior ones, makes him a twin of Rod Serling. The difference is that Serling never caught crap for how he presented his tales, but instead was celebrated for it. Both costumed their stories in familiar genres yet took the stories in unexpected directions to make their profound points. Serling was considered deep and creative; Shyamalan is considered a 'one-trick pony'. You can't tell me Serling didn't regularly use a 'twist' in his "Twilight Zone' series.
For a man who may have lost his career...he puts out a whole lotta content. There are a few ways of looking at that statement. Great reaction...Happy 🎃
@@paulineandrushuk8923 heck yeah. It’s actually quite a complex story I think, and I know they will catch on. They are both very clever. It’s a fantastic fantasy film!
Love this film, never gets old, very underrated in my opinion. Please consider reacting to The Village, another great M.Night film. Loved your guys' reaction, you're awesome 😊.
take this in mind that there is a theory that the monsters in this movie they are not alienes but demons, you look for the theory and it make a lot of sense to all that happen in the movie.
Another really fun reaction. This is such a terrific film. I also recommend Shyamalan's "The Village," the last remaining one from his "great period." After that, it's pretty slim pickings until "Split."
Great reaction. Please react to The Village by M.Night. most people hated it. It was marketed as a horror picture, and people were so mad when it turned out to be a love story. Great cast, Joaquin Phoenix, William hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Brendan Gleeson, Bryce Dallas Howard and a few more big names.
This is true of every M Night Shyamalan film: the genre is all surface to the real story underneath. "The Sixth Sense" is not a horror story. "Signs" is not an alien invasion movie. "The Village" is not a Gothic costume film. "Unbreakable" is not a superhero/supervillain tale. "The Happening" is not an environmental disaster film. The genre is costuming, superficial. The REAL story is below the surface and far more intriguing.
Maybe the aliens had run out of resources and came to invade Earth because they were in a desperate situation. Apparently, they breathe oxygen. Perhaps ours was the first planet with a lot of oxygen in its atmosphere that they encountered as they were flying around in their spaceship, and so they came here despite the water because they really had no choice. Wether one buys that hypothesis or not, it is a great movie. And I should mention James Newton Howard's score. It is fantastic :)
One of my all-time faves for more reasons than I can list.😊 This is the question lately that has me boggled...are they aliens or demons? I have heard/read great arguments for both. For years I believed they were to be aliens...but recently the idea of it having a more theological tone is fascinating. Also, the actress who plays the wife doesn't get the credit she deserves, she isn't on screen long but SELLS her dying breaths, undying love and prophecies. Thanks again you two. Very fun reaction☺️💚
"The Sixth Sense" was Shyamalan's breakout film, buoyed up by full major studio support. Except Shyamalan had no control over marketing, where the studio did him unintentional dirty. They didn't understand the film, so they marketed it as a 'horror' film, as a scary ghost story. It's not. This is the source of his 'reputation' of utilizing 'the Twist'. Because it was so built up to the public that this was a scary movie, but it resolves in an unexpected way. I love "The Sixth Sense" for its detail, its intelligence, its film/storytelling craftmanship, and its humanity. I hate that this gets lost by the studio promising through marketing something cheaper than the depth of what was delivered.
So glad you 2 watched this film, and I can always tell when Jen is totally enthralled because she lets the "F" word slip out. Gotta love alien movies, thanks.
I have to say that I really like M. Night movies. Creepy, suspenseful without all the gore, se x and abundance of lewd language. Movies I can watch with my older kids and not feel uncomfortable about. Lady in the Water is worth a watch
This was such a great film in so many ways, but yeah, that one plot hole brought it down a little for me, still good though. The only MNS film I'd say don't watch, was The Happening, but everything else I didn't really think the hate was warranted. I really liked 'The Village' and 'Lady In The Water' was cool, but the brilliance of 'Split' and 'Glass' can't be denied and with 'Unbreakable' make up one of the great trilogies, imo of course. This was fun guys, thank you.✌❤
There's not a lot of explanation, as there usually is in scifi films, especially alien invasion movies. But this isn't exactly an 'alien invasion' movie. The aliens aren't on Earth very long, basically only a 'fly-by'. The aliens are just a plot device, part of the 'costuming' to give AN explanation for the emotional issues that are the real underlying story playing out. As speculation (for those who need it), the aliens are a nomadic species that travel through the great expanses of space stopping to harvest as necessary what they as need and/or opportunity presents itself. Water (specifically LIQUID water) is not present in the universe as abundantly as it is on Earth; we are finding this out as astrophysicists search the cosmos for Earthlike planets. The water we have on Earth appears to be the generous bounty provided us by chance meteor, asteroid, and comet strikes. Many planets can't keep their water, innate or cosmically-dispensed, for a myriad of reasons (radiation, low atmospheric pressure, heat, cold, etc). These aliens seem able to tolerate much of Earth conditions except for water. One good rainstorm and they could get wiped out. We don't know the range of their tolerations. They might handle frozen ammonia pretty well or various atmospheric gasses or even ice/snow; we don't know. All we know is that terran animal life (including human life) is a desirable resource for them. We don't know if they chanced harvesting Earth because their stores were low or if they overlooked the water issue. All we know is they stayed less than a week; for us, it was a one-off. And this tells me that the aliens were not a major component to the story; they provided an excuse for moving the story along, for the friction necessary to force resolution to the real problem this family faced. The aliens in this story make or break the family; they survive by coming together or they die. Lack of faith was their fatal vulnerability, but they met the challenge and survived.
The aliens HAD TO depart, because not only is the Earth mostly water (As you correctly pointed out), but Winter was coming and they'd have no way to battle against all the rain and snow (As shown in the final scene).
I love this movie, but I also like Lady in the water (not a popular opinion) with Paul Giamatti, a little bit more of the fantasy side to it. But its great. If you want another horror, another M night is the Visit, it is also underrated and scary as all get out!
I satched this on cable with my goddaughter and when they are panning over to the bat at the end the cable froze and goodvthing it was 24 hour pay per view had to start it all over again but ty forcreacting I love ❤this movie
There’s a theory circulating online that Signs is actually a demon story disguised as an alien invasion film. The main character, a priest who lost his faith after a family tragedy, faces what appear to be demons. As the story unfolds, he engages in battles that ultimately lead to victory and the restoration of his faith. The “signs” are all around him-from his wife’s prophetic words to his daughter, Abigail (a name meaning “angel”), who leaves a trail of “holy” water throughout the house. Even the moment when his son stops breathing ends up saving his life. Viewed as a faith-based film, everything aligns: the symbolism and events make more sense than the alien invasion plot, especially considering the question of why advanced aliens would invade a planet primarily covered in water, a substance that harms them.
Only problem with that is the movie clearly shows they are aliens. Why would demons need directional signs that can only be clearly seen from above? The book Morgan buys is about aliens. Why would demons use flying ships that can be detected by radar & become invisible so that it kiIIed a bird who flew into it? The newscasts clearly says that the invaders are aliens who came to Earth to harvest people. Some people have too much time on their hands & they waste it coming up with ridiculous theories that make them believe they’re smarter than everyone else. I had a literature teacher in college that spend hours reading books looking for symbolism in every single paragraph. The red apple in the bowl described in chapter whatever symbolized this or that or the other. Not everything is a symbol or has a hidden meaning. Aliens are actually aliens & the apple is just an apple,
And it may not be the water itself that is harmful but the impurities in the water. Water has all kinds of stuff in it. Tap water has fluoride for our teeth as well as other chemicals used to make it safe to drink. Water in lakes & ponds & streams has all kinds of things in it which is why it has to be filtered & processed to make it safe for us to drink. Rain has air pollutants as well as pollen. Pure water with absolutely nothing in it is fairly rare. So it might not be the water itself that’s harmful to the aliens but any of the hundreds of things found in water.
32:28 My issue is not that a race that is susceptible to water comes to a planet covered in water to hunt for food as need overrides risk, it is more how can a race evolve that isn't water based. They breathe oxygen since they have no masks so appear to be breathing oxygen (I guess they could be breathing some other part of our atmosphere composition like nitrogen) & hydrogen is the most abundant element in the known universe so water should naturally be present on their home world so there is no logic in them being vulnerable to it water. However great reaction as walways & dying to see your reaction to Deadpool and Wolverine & see what you think of it. Heads up 2 credit scenes,1 midway & second at the end.
Concerning the whole 'oxygen/hydrogen' thoughts, I am reminded of a comedic science-based poem of my elementary school days: Johnny was a chemist Johnny is no more For what he thought was H2O water] Was H2SO4 [sulfuric acid] You can breathe hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur individually, but in the right mix it will dissolve you.
The aliens didn’t come to Earth to colonize. They just stopped to grab some snacks. Like we do when we run into a convenience store on long road trips. Unfortunately we were the snacks.
Honestly this is one of those movies where the longer you think about it and the more you watch it the worse it is. It's just SO preachy and SO flimsily written And frankly Mel's acting in my opinion is pretty awful (The other actors are fantastic though). As a horror movie though it's fantastic, it's shot well, it has some genuinely hilarious moments as well. It's got some very solidly scary moments. But the second you think about "Why?" it just falls apart entirely. Even besides "Why did aliens come to the planet made of the substance that kills them?" also why did aliens choose to engage in hand-to-hand combat??? It's just so dumb. The only logical theory I've ever seen is that they aren't aliens at all, they're demons. And they aren't weak against ALL water, but Bo is genuinely an angel, so the water is blessed since it's her water. Likely the other places they were repelled were by other incarnated angels or people figuring it out and making holy water as well. They weren't landing, they were being summoned, the lights/invisible ships were actually gates of some sort. They were possibly showing up a few at a time not to scout but to instill fear and weaken the boundaries of the worlds even more. Honestly it's the only explanation that makes half a lick of sense for why they operate the way they do.
The thing about Mel is...anything he does IS convincing even being Not convincing. Great acting being a bad actor pretending to be a cop talking to the alien...
My favorite Shyamalan movie. That dinner table scene is just outstanding, and no one can play devastation like Mel Gibson.
The way that military guy looked and was talking was so weird and corny haha I loved it.
One of my all-time faves for more reasons than I can list.😊
This is the question lately that has me boggled...are they aliens or demons? I have heard/read great arguments for both. For years I believed they were to be aliens...but recently the idea of it having a more theological tone is fascinating.
Also, the actress who plays the wife doesn't get the credit she deserves, she isn't on screen long but SELLS her dying breaths, undying love and prophecies.
Thanks again you two. Very fun reaction☺️💚
Yes! I love Patricia Kalember! 😊
Nick”Build It And He Will Come!” Oh Nick you don’t want these “things” to come!!
The sixth sense is another good movie by M.Night Shyamalan and the acting is excellent
Split and The Village are also great movies by Shyamalan.
My favorite of his is still “The Sixth Sense “!!!
I love this movie! It was so much fun seeing it in the theater. I love the way it was filmed, and pretty much everything about it.
😊
18:11 yh its M. Night Shyamalan lol director/screenplay/actor and who knows what else lol
another one of his i liked on 1st watch was The Village 2004
One of my favorite movies. Thanks.
😊
The whole fiasco nearly bankrupted the largest manufacturer of food dehydrators on the alien homeworld.
So glad you 2 watched this film, and I can always tell when Jen is totally enthralled because she lets the "F" word slip out. Gotta love alien movies, thanks.
😊
Great reaction to one of my fave Shyamalan films! I love the way he focuses on family in this.
This is my favourite movie!
I have to say that I really like M. Night movies. Creepy, suspenseful without all the gore, se x and abundance of lewd language. Movies I can watch with my older kids and not feel uncomfortable about. Lady in the Water is worth a watch
A great one!!!
Yay!!!! I love this film, one of his best in my opinion. The score, the writing, I love it all!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I feel this movie is underrated.
One of his best movies and one of my favorites ❤
😊❤
This was such a great film in so many ways, but yeah, that one plot hole brought it down a little for me, still good though. The only MNS film I'd say don't watch, was The Happening, but everything else I didn't really think the hate was warranted. I really liked 'The Village' and 'Lady In The Water' was cool, but the brilliance of 'Split' and 'Glass' can't be denied and with 'Unbreakable' make up one of the great trilogies, imo of course. This was fun guys, thank you.✌❤
We know of no other life. Water is their weakness. I think we're their only choice. I do not see that as a shortcoming of the movie.
Yay! One heckuva good movie ❤ the acting is superb.
The most scariest creature was that Master Sergeant in the Draft Office.
I always wonder what happened to the sheriff. She never came back to follow up 😂..
Yeah! 😁
I love this movie, but I also like Lady in the water (not a popular opinion) with Paul Giamatti, a little bit more of the fantasy side to it. But its great. If you want another horror, another M night is the Visit, it is also underrated and scary as all get out!
@@catherinetait6331 I really like Lady in the water too!☺️
Excellent movie 🤘🔥
Since you liked Unbreakable, Split & Glass are a must.
Hope you guys do final destination 2!
Yes we are this month! 😊
@@Jen-Mom yay!
I satched this on cable with my goddaughter and when they are panning over to the bat at the end the cable froze and goodvthing it was 24 hour pay per view had to start it all over again but ty forcreacting I love ❤this movie
my grandma loved The Village. she passed away 6-6-11
So it might not be the water itself that’s harmful to the aliens but any of the hundreds of things found in water.
pleaase watch scary movie 2, 3 and 4. This movie inspired Scary movie 3 heavily, you will LOVE IT HAHA
Can't watch the car crash scene without giggling. Thinking of that Scary Movie scene: "Tom, I'll need a ride home...", that is. XD
@@Alswider I think I watched it a million times and it still gets me.
Thanks! We will be doing X Men reactions eventually. Just not sure when. And those mid-credits scenes were THE BEST!!!
Concerning the whole 'oxygen/hydrogen' thoughts, I am reminded of a comedic science-based poem of my elementary school days:
Johnny was a chemist
Johnny is no more
For what he thought was H2O water]
Was H2SO4 [sulfuric acid]
You can breathe hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur individually, but in the right mix it will dissolve you.
i love your reactions but i cant stop thinking how you only hear it on one ear the whole time, kinda kills the vibe, no? love your videos tho, so fun
The aliens didn’t come to Earth to colonize. They just stopped to grab some snacks. Like we do when we run into a convenience store on long road trips. Unfortunately we were the snacks.
The dog was growling at the girl, not the water.
A ninja?! Lol
❤
The only logical thing to do now is watch Scary Movie 3
Devil is a good one too.....
Honestly it's the only explanation that makes half a lick of sense for why they operate the way they do.
so I'm waiting for you to review Thelma & Louise and Single White Female.pls...
The thing about Mel is...anything he does IS convincing even being Not convincing. Great acting being a bad actor pretending to be a cop talking to the alien...
Joaquin's character is the son, not Mel's characters brother.
Aliens and other being exists. Still pray to god.
