Does it have Pic on demand without anything setting it off?

yes it does, i have not used that feature, but i remember seeing it in the settings. skip to the settings section at the 35:39 mark and i show the setting briefly.

Why not just buy a regular Flex and use an external battery with it? No need to buy a camera with all those AA batteries.

The main reason i hear of someone buying this camera is if they are worried about a large footprint. its great for people who want longer battery life, but dont want to make their camera too conspicuous so someone will see it and steal it.
