- Blender tutorial on creating a throw cushion for a couch quickly. Rather than sculpt it manually, we'll use the new Cloth pressure simulation feature to make it lickety split.

The problem I encounter with this cloth simulation is that my computer simulate real smoke from the exhaust fan.

Both have a place! Basics and slower to learn the interface, then when you’re intermediate and know the interface, these quick techniques are great.
But to any beginner, this would still be too fast lol.

That polygon ad was so smooth it felt like it was subsurfed.
Andrews voice is so soothing, I use this tutorial as a bed time story

No doubt there’s a place for both of these types of tutorials!
For a total beginner, spelling it out step by step and slower is a lot better. A beginner doesn’t know the tools, or how to even easily navigate and orbit their object.
But these are phenomenal for intermediates! We don’t need EVERYTHING spelled out, but these techniques are useful to add to our tool belt.
definitely keep both up if you can! I had done a bunch of tutorials including of course the donut, but until you did a specific and spelled out modeling tutorial with the chair, the concepts hadn’t REALLY stuck.
So there’s a place for both styles and I hope you can keep up both!

Good pace, I like quick tutorials at this point, when I mostly understand Blender but also when you do slow tutorials there's much more hidden stuff not related to the object you make and that's even more valuable.
I really want to see more lazy blenderguru tutorials like this.

It's been a while since I watched one of blender guru's tutorials, I almost forgot how good they are!
I like this quicker style tutorial, though I really love the random rambliness of the usual step-by-step tutorials.
Since years one of the most valuable YT channels. And the perfect tutorial pace.

1:50 If, like me, you find your cushion going through the seat no matter what you try, untick 'single sided' in the Softbody segment of the collision section for each of the couch cushions; it then started bouncing off the top of the couch cushion as it should.

i mean the 30 minute method is still good for close ups. this would probably look weird in a close up shot.
Its just a different seam.
This is when both sides are sewed flat ontop of each other and in the end everything is turned inside out. Now the seams are tucked into the inside and it looks like in this video.
The other video presents a visible seam that appears when the backside of one cloth is sewed flush with the front side of the other half.
Both exist in the real world so both can look perfectly fine up close. Its just not the same thing
cushions often are sewed with the tucked in method while whole couches almost never are so both made sense at their place...
Not really. He already used this method in his Teddy bear tutorial (mentioned in the 30 minute episode) but wanted to show a different one with stitches.
Theres fabric over fabric seams like the other tutorial, where you see stitching and need texture information, and theres fabric to fabric faces and turned inside out seams like this ones which just represent a negative bump.
This method is infinitely faster, and works for a cushion because the stitch is a simple indentation. But there’s no detail and it relies on geometry.
I’d still use the longer method for the rest of the couch :)

I want to thank you for keeping me inspired and sane throughout this difficult time. I'm currently in studying China where the pandemic hit first and things haven't been easy since then. I'm a little greedy when it comes to good content, so created a whole playlist for most, if not all of your videos. *Fun fact, i didn't even have a pc or an ipd throughout this time, but i still watched the videos to the end. Now I'm Happy to say that the PC and Huion Tablet i ordered a few days ago just arrived and i Can't wait to try Blender 2.83. I went through this tutorial time and again. What I did this time differently is in >Physical Properties instead of angular mode I enabled linear. This renders creases much closer to the real world. Thanks for the video.
Alternative for preparing the pillow thickness: alt-select the edge loop of the pillow after extruding and press ctrl+i to invert, h to hide. Now you're left with only the edge loop. run a little merge by distance, alt+h to reveal the hidden mesh and tada! I think it's a little neater becaue it's mostly shortcuts or typing, no pressing buttons on screen

Finally to the point tutorial
You can also use cloth simulation to make things like static banners, curtains or canvas roofs etc. like you get with a tent, so many options to consider. As shown in this tutorial just drop a texture on the static mesh you've created and then you're done and it will add some detail to a scene that would otherwise be bland, I successfully imported a little banner into Unity doing this. Just a matter of sensible placement after that.

One thing is missing to be noted in this tutorial I guess, when I simulated my cushions, they just lied flat like rugs! 😂
As I'm low experienced in sims I thought I try other options and found that "Pressure" is the key to POP my cushions like video.
After that, I watched it again and noticed that in 1:59 , "Pressure" is checked and told.

I get much faster and more consistent results if I put the subsurf modifier after the cloth sim, which is what I'd expect. I think that part of this video is based on some outdated tech (I'm running Blender 3.10 beta). If I run the subsurf modifier at the top of the stack, not only does my 3700x choke even harder than Andrew's CPU, but the cloth sim turns into a wet balloon or a bed of spikes depending on what I'm doing.
