In the first draft of "The Changing Face of Evil" script, Weyoun wondered if the Breen ever slept and Thot Gor replied that it was none of his business, to which Weyoun agreed.

I like that the Breen never became just lackies, it was clearly a partnership and even the Founders knew they had to play ball
I wondered if the Dominion ever really quite got a handle on who and what the Breen are. I think that, in time, they would have been folded into the Dominion more broadly. The Cardassians seemed to think of themselves as allies of The Dominion, rather than members. I suspect the Dominion always saw them as members but were willing to let them play at heroics before gradually being subsumed into the whole.
Temporary is the keyword here, the dominion was at the significantly weakened position within the alpha quadrant with all 3 major superpowers allied against it. No doubt a lot of the worlds under dominion rule once upon a time were "equal partners" that dissolved into client states.
To hell with it. This is canon as far as I'm concerned. I like how they're complete smart asses. xD

Speaking of canon, as theyre wearing the same helmets that leia used in starwars, does this mean star trek and starwars exist in the same universe?

I felt so sure that Thot Pran wanted to be on his ship because he planned to ditch Cardassia and go home. I mean, the Breen were pragmatic. They were in it for what they would get out of it, and the Founder wasn't in any position to be handing out planets anymore.
You aren't wrong. In the novelization of the Battle of Cardassia, the Breen hightail it out of there before the Federation alliance arrives.
@@dhunter1133 can’t really blame the Breen for how they dealt with the situation. They probably thought the dominion would win the war and that eventually the Dominion would invade Breen territory after they got through with everyone else. So they choose to join freely rather than be conquered.
Once it was obvious the dominion would lose, there was no reason for them to be involved. They are pretty much left alone by the Romulans , federation and Klingons.
My personal theory was the Breen fleet stayed in Cardassia to inflict as many casualties on the Federation and its allies as possible in order to deter them from invading and occupying Breen space after the war was over.
@@rowlandbuck2703 I think the Breen thought it would be a quick war, that their energy dampening weapons would destroy all that face them in combat. The Dominion screwed up by allowing the alliance to capture the weapon.
You comment would make sense, if the Breen joined when the Dominion were winning but they joined when the Dominion was actually losing the war. They did this presumably to obtain the maximum they could, Romulus and Earth.
@@rowlandbuck2703I think they were more pragmatic, they only joined when the tide had turned and the Dominion had started losing (the first invasion of Cardassian space) as they realised they would have leverage, they did turn the tide with the invasion being repulsed and the Dominion able to launch fresh outflanking raids into Federation space.
I gladly accept this as canon, and am personally grateful to the translator who put in the work for this.

Here's an interesting fact: The Breen's speech uses the same samples used for the cyber ninjas in Mortal Kombat 3, just heavily altered.

The DS9 novel has the Been as 4 seperate races. One of them white wolf like species. Hence the snout portion of the mask. They keep their species hidden to avoid partisanship or disfavour over any member of the confederacy.

Never understood why the universal translator worked for EVERYONE except the Breen.
Knowing the Breen, they probably use their masks to encrypt every word they say to make it untranslatable to standard universal translators unless the Breen themselves give the user a decryption key.
The universal translator is weird; there are all sorts of occasions when it doesn't translate something simply to make the speakers seem more alien. (The Klingons seem to get it the most.)

The personalities you gave the Breen match perfectly what I imagine them to be. More than just no-nonsense, also regular purveyors of shade.
Federation: "Noooo you can't just attack San Francisco!!"

It’s hilarious how Worf immediately moves on to the next Breen, expecting the first to collapse under his strike, which honestly would have happened for most enemies in the same situation.
Breen just shrugged it off and zapped him for the annoyance. lol
That move succeeded on multiple Jem'Hadar. You can now see why the Jem'Hadar, when seeing Kira in a Breen suit, looked scared.

Also, the Breen are a coalition of species that uses the suits to disguise which species is inside it to prevent any form of racial nepotism from forming and ensuring that advancement is actually based upon merit. And only one species actually requires the breathing apparatus to be functional from that coalition.
I like how they just kept tasing Worf after he's been knocked down.

The Breen were supposed to be the most powerful race of beings in the alpha quadrant, and yet they lost the dominion war. The Star Trek Production team admitted, they never got into the Breen origins, their history or what they looked like underneath the masks. Hope the Breen will return in future Star Trek shows.
Well their main ally got completely cut off and then their main base on Cardassia got taken, against the might of the Romulans, Klingons and Federation they would have eventually lost against such numbers without any allies

I thought they were primarily a beta quadrant species.
They wear refrigeration suits and live on a planet covered in ice.
They have returned in the latest episode of Lower Decks. It’s assumed that they remained a relatively strong power in the AQ after the Dominion war. The Federation, Klingon and Romulan empires were all weakened after the war, the Cardassians has no influence, leaving other races to fill the political vacuum. Without more detailed info about the size of their military forces, resources used for their war effort and the Confederacy itself it’s difficult to gauge.

its interesting you interpreted them very differently than i did. you made him much more polite and relatable that i imagined him. the breen were so ruthless and cold, i always imagined he spoke in short harsh sentences, to the point, brutally so, and had a much more viscous personality to fit their callous actions through out the show.

Damar could be pretty cool when he wanted to be. And the subtitles add character to the Breen. They can be pretty funny, once you understand what they're saying.
"You should have killed me. There's only one Damar." One of the best line in the whole series.
It’s weird, but there are moments that you can actually almost hear faint words being spoken.
When the Founder tells Pran (or whoever) to accelerate the installation of the Bremen weapon, it almost sounds like he responds with “Yes, Madam Founder” under all that static
The voices may very well have been recorded with actual lines in English.
I doubt that's their real language, they probably have encrypted voice modulators so only they can understand each other over their helmets like Star Wars death troopers, who also make similar unintelligible sounds.
The bit where Weyoun tells Thot Gor to find Damar is that clear, it sounds like Gor responds with "Perfectly clear."

Anyone ever notice how Breen ships look like much more advanced versions of the renegade Borg ship that Lore's Borg were using, and that their national emblem is almost identical to a Borg Vinculum?

Breen are rebel Borg that severed from the collective centuries ago, and have now developed beyond ever rejoining the collective. To hide their cyborg nature, they wear the suits and helmets, and it's why their homeworld is intolerably cold for other species, because as Liberated Borg, they don't fucking care.
That's not a bad theory.

In one episode Weyoun claims that he visited the Breen homeworld and that it has a warm climate. However, the Breen may have just taken him to a different planet and pretended it was their homeworld.
@@bobnope457 My theory is that the Breen homeworld's orbit is highly eccentric, possibly a captured planet. In the summer it is warm, but in the winter, it gets extremely cold. To adapt, the water in their bodies gradually replaces with ethanol over the course of the year. They only need the suits when they visit warm places during the winter.

When I first saw the Breen, I thought they looked like Gorns in stormtrooper armor.
The helmets look al.ost like princess leias Bousch disguise. Shocked the Breen dont carry thermal detonators.

This is awesome! I've seen parodies like this, but yours fits the continuity pretty much exactly and is much more believable. Great work! One question - what do you think the Breen officer mumbled at 6:45?
Can't remember for sure. It got lost in my re-edit. Might have been something along the lines of "Can't wait 'til then".
He was muttering to himself about the Founder: "This bitch has some nasty eczema!"
"Not to shabby" ha ha that was both comical and ridiculous for a breen to say lol but when you posed the subtitle of "see you soon" I just gave up.

I'm curious how you made dialogue for the Breen. What just seemed to fit or actual reference to scripts and other sources?
Yeah, the scripts never listed dialogue for them, just designated squawking. Usually, the other characters' dialogue was supposed to let you get an idea of what the Breen were saying. I backtracked to come up with I thought made reasonable sense (though in two instances I had a little fun with it; still think they work).

Both theories (above)...about Breen being offshoot of Borg... And Breen home world having an eccentric orbit are good theories.
Very usable and easy to write in for Trek bosses.
But Breen could also be their own uniquely evolved species...or a splinter race from another established Trek race.
Example... Romulan are offshoot of the Vulcans. The Breen could be offshoot as well...or a hybrid race.

I thought it'd be amusing if they took advantage of the Dominion's reliance on them to make some snarky comments. Especially where Broca mispronounces Pran's name and has that surprised look at the Breen's reply. It begged for something a bit humorous.

the breen use one thermal uniform because on your home planet the temperatures are very high and need this mask and uniform to cold your corporal temperature. according the star trek wikipedia they have wolf face.
Those helmets the aliens are wearing look like the one's Leia wore at Jabba's palace. Not a bad thing, just kinda noticeable =P

First time I saw the Breen in DS9 I thought, "Wait a second! Who copied Boushh's outfit that Princess Leia wore in Return of the Jedi?"
Yup, all that was missing was the Breen holding a thermal detonator.
The Breen military had a similar code to that of Japanese Bushido - but likewise, during WW2, Japanese training and discipline in the end wasn't enough to ensure victory. Certainly, the Breen superior technology scored some devastating defeats upon the Alliance, until a Klingon engineer developed a counter-measure against power-dampening. And then the Romulan entry into the war on the Alliance side boosted numbers and steadily began to push back the Dominion. In this sense, the Breen are similar to the warlike Mandalorians from the Star War franchise - too focused on brute force and honourable means than to consider alternative routes in achieving victory, such as diplomacy and subterfuge, and as a result: would suffer eventual defeat. The latter method is excellently illustrated by Garak's (the DS9 tailor) elaborate plan when he sneaked aboard the ship of those Romulan ambassadors where he placed a bomb - and the fake recording of a Dominion plot to attack Romulan that would certainly be found in the wreckage by Romulan investigators.
Those comments were perfect for the Breen.

I feel like the Breen have a lot of potential as Star Trek baddies in the future. They didn't lose NEARLY as many resources as the Cardassians did in the Dominion War. Add thirty-ish years of fleet build-up on top of that, and you've got the makings of a formidable foe to the Federation.

How were you able to translate from Breen to English? I never figured out what they were saying, except maybe a couple of educated guesses. By the way there were Breen speaking lines in Star Trek Lower Decks “Trusted Sources”.
They're educated guesses based off context with a slant towards sarcastic quips. This compilation was published before the Breen appeared on LD.
I love the Breen. They're just so criminally underrated. I'd choose them over the Cardassian Union any day!
