    6:07 To be fair, although I’m not an Android or Windows user nor fan, I’m sure the Android/Windows combination allows for way less restricted coupling of a tablet as the only screen. Apple probably just does not want you to do this, because of aesthetic or marketing reasons.
    Thanks for the video! 💜

      @jpr-tech  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True that!
      I have used my android tablet as monitor for my Mac Mini. The only thing is that it is just that... an external monitor @ low resolution.
      The iPad pro not only has a higher resolution (than MY android tablet), but also has so many other additional features: like using the iPad's Camera, Microphone, Multi-Touch support for scrolling, zooming and clicking, support for the apple pencil and a shortcut bar on the side of the iPad for macOS hotkeys.
      So that's the advantage of the locked down ecosystem of Apple. It can be annoying and frustrating at times, but sometimes rewarding! Cheers!

    Thanks for the info. Everything worked except for the keyboard shortcut. No matter how many times I changed the custom key shortcut in the keyboard preferences, nothing happens when I hit them. I'm running MacOs Big Sur with the iPadOS 17 on an iPad Mini 6. The iPad worked as a third monitor on my 3 monitor setup. It only switches to the iPad as primary monitor when I activate it manually on the primary displays. Any ideas?

    • @jpr-tech
      @jpr-tech  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're welcome! For me I can only make it work without any monitor if I have a window (any program will do) but personally I just have FINDER open at login. Only when selecting a window will the shortcut work. If I have NO windows selected, it will not work.
      I don't know about why it doesn't activate as primary display automatically, but it could the bug I was just telling you about 'having a FINDER window open" to make the shortcut work.
      For some reason after upgrading to iPadOS, this shortcut method is not working properly.
      This is just a work around for now.
      Another thing that made things much easier is to just use a dummy HDMI dongle. It tricks the Mac to thinking there's already a monitor connected and automatically mirrors the dongle at only 1080p, but it works pretty well for me.

    This is an incredible hack. It worked! It is incredible that this solution is not widely known.
    However, in my setup, it only worked with HDMI dummy dongle plugged in. I am using a base model M2 Mac Mini + M2 11" iPad Pro. If I try to extend the monitor to the iPad without anything plugged in the HDMI port, it gives an error message on the Mac "Unable to connect to the iPad" (ot something like that). The error message can be seem once I plug the Mac Mini back into the normal monitor.

    • @jpr-tech
      @jpr-tech  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I know right, this is such a useful "hack". But I think Apple may have crippled this feature so that it only works with a HDMI dummy dongle. Before (I forgot the macOS version) it was working flawlessly, and then an update came and I lost the ability.
      We are pretty much stuck with the HDMI dongle.
      *Another free method is to use "Duet" app to connect and then you'll be able to see the macOS environment on your iPad, therefor allowing you to turn ON Sidecar and use that instead of the connection with Duet (much more fluent with Sidecar > Duet). Thanks again for the feedback ❣️

    Hi, congratulations for the video!
    Unfortunately it doesn't work for me! I would like to ask you for support in connecting my iPad Pro 12.9 M1 with a Mac Mini Pro M2.
    I've done all the steps you said but the iPad screen doesn't show the Mac Mini desktop.
    Let me start by saying that I connect the iPad and Mac Mini with a USB-C / USB-C cable and the charging symbol is present.
    When I reconnect the lcd screen to the Mac Mini I see that the iPad is connected to the Mac Mini as if I were using sidecar and it shares everything correctly. By detaching the HDMI cable from the Mac Mini screen, the iPad returns to showing its apps and not sharing.
    I also tried using an adapter and connecting iPad and Mac with HDMI but nothing.
    I hope I have explained myself... could you help me in some way?
    PS isn't it possible to do this anymore with the new systems?

    • @jpr-tech
      @jpr-tech  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, Apple has been clamping down on this "useful BUG" and it looks like it is trying to avoid us from using the Mac mini as a portable machine. The best WORK AROUND is to get a "Dummy HDMI adapter". That small dongle fools the iPad into thinking it is connected to a monitor and then the shortcut to start SideCar and add a display WORKS!
      Fortunately, the dongle is cheap. So, if you are gonna be working outside often with your mini, it is worth the purchase.

    I was really hoping i could get this to work.
    I have a M2Pro Mac Mini and Airpad Air 5th gen. Mac Mini connected to iPad with a USBc cable. The only difference i can can tell is that the Max Mini OSX is Ventura 13.31 where the system preferences has completely changed to look more like the settings on an iPad..so not everything is identical.
    Good with auto log on....no issues there.
    Couldn't get the Short cut to work. Wrote the side car wording down identical to what it looked like in the finder window. When i press the shortcut....i just hear a click. I know side car works as i can mirror the screen to my iPad when i do it through finder....just won't work through a short cut. Another thing.....i have to rely this with my main screen plugged in to the HDMI ( as i cant get the short cut working ) but for some reason when i remove the HDMI from my main monitor, i also lose the feed going to the iPad.
    Gremlins.
    Anyone know if this hack works with the latest OSX?.

    • @jpr-tech

      Yes! I have been suffering from this issue as well. Even though I don’t usually get an error, the iPad screens goes to the Lock Screen. Then the Face ID screens pops up, but never unlocks.
      I resorted to using Duet which does the same thing, but you’ll need the app installed on both the Mac & iPad. Fortunately, it’s free.
      Starting the Duet app up, brings up the side car screen and everything is back to normal. Just remember to add Duet to the login apps on your Mac.

      Please tell me if this works. I have no iPad for now but am considering buying one.
      EDIT: the first setting above is from "Universal Control" which is controlling your iPad screen from your Mac trackpad and keyboard. However here we want to do the other way around, i.e. control the Mac UI from the iPad, so it may not work. Somehow the second setting may be closer to a solution, but it seems that Wake on LAN is broken in macOS Ventura for now (?) as some people say magic packets do not awake their Mac anymore.

    We should just be able to usbc to usbc plug a Mac Mini into an ipad and it works immediately.. why doesnt Apple just do these things.. and it all works with the Magic Keyboard

      I know! That is a great idea! Here is to wishful thinking, hoping that Apple has a heart and allows this.
