    If you watch Groundhog Day backwards it's about a friendly man who relives the same day over and over again until he becomes a cynical, narcissistic weather reporter.

He served his 50 something year sentence and just recently got released and wanted to move back into his parents home but it was demolished or bought by someone new. So he's just scattering around his own neighborhood where he once killed and raped. Find shelter to sleep where ever he can

      Moments aren't meant to be lived to remember, they're meant to be lived in the moment. Memory can be nice, but it is ultimately futile, since memories don't last forever. Everything you knew, everyone you cared about, will someday be gone, and someday even you won't be around to remember them. And at the point, everything you held dear will disappear like tears in the rain.

    Phil couldn't prevent the man's death, but he might as well have done something for him on his last day. You can really see the guilt on his face in the last scene as he had previously shunned him. Also, I just have to point out his haunting gaze towards God at the end, as if he is giving into the time loop and recognizing his selfishness at last.

    • @GenGamesUniverse
      @GenGamesUniverse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I think that was the whole point, Phil's character was more of an narcissistic prick who didn't want to have anything to do with the time loop like how he would often kill himself or try to get himself killed in all manner of situations like bathfull of water and the toaster or stepping out into the oncoming truck getting killed in a automobile accident or looking at the elderly homeless man begging for money and like "Pfft, I'm not gonna give you any money!".
      HOWEVER, as he seemingly knows the loop keeps going (when it keeps playing Sonny and Cher's "I've got you, babe!" on the radio alarm clock, Phil gives up being this narcissistic jerk and helps people out like the elderly homeless man by first giving him some money, then taking him out for a meal but realises that he is no god and that he cannot change the wheel of fate because he was going to die anyway and that Phil decided to teach himself the piano, teach himself how to cut ice and make sculptures from the ice etc and it all makes him realise that there is good in the world.
      It sorta can be likened to Scrooged, with Murrays character being a miser over Xmas and going through the whole three ghosts of past, present and future and realises that he doesn't have to be this bastard who hates people (like how he found the homeless chap from the homeless hostel dead after the ghost of christmas present punched him in the face with a toaster), but be a person who goes out and gives someone a sandwich if they are hungry or a cup of coffee if they are thirsty or a blanket if they are cold and tired or friendship if they are alone and vulnerable

    To me this is such a heart breaking scene. Bill pretty much becomes a God & everyday he gets to influence and change the outcome of just 1 day over & over again. But even with that power, no matter how much he tries to change the homeless man's fate it is still beyond his control & desire to save him. Even with God powers there are just somethings in life we can't change

    I swear this scene gets me every time man. The scene overall is heartbreaking, but the look of utter joy as he's eating in the diner is especially heartbreaking to me. It's sad knowing there are people that can't even afford to provide themselves with such a basic need as food, and knowing how many times I've walked past someone who needed help and I ignored them out of selfish reasons. We waste money on televisions, thousand dollar phones, cars, throw thousand of dollars of food away every year, while some people struggle to survive, dying on the street as if their lives were less meaningful than an animals.

    What's interesting about this sequence is the number of chances we get in life to help others is so great. Unfortunately we're constantly in a self-serving lifestyle that we fail to recognize those opportunities. Then when we finally become selfless, it's too late to help. I have so much regret for all the good I could have done, but did not do, because I was selfish. Did he come to that realization after trying for years to save this old man, but to no avail?

    The events of the film are reflective of grief and facing mortality. Phil goes through all the stages and even repeats them at a faster pace when he tries to help the old man, feeling a sense of hope. When he realizes he can do nothing to prevent someone's very certain death, he finally reaches the final stage, acceptance, and the next day he's at peace with his life and himself as a person. Cue the grand final Groundhog Day.

Who he can't save no matter what he does. Something I noted recently though is the loop before he does "everything right" and Rita falls in love with him, is the loop where the old man dies outside whispering in his ear.
