Hey Dan sick video! AFAIK They're called rails because in surfing the edge of your board is commonly referred to as the rails. For the same reason in snowboarding the terms boardslide and railslide are essentiall interchangeable! I've been riding a Santa Cruz Roskopp reissue board this season and I love it! Shaped decks have so much personality and their lines are so nice looking. I'm also much more of an 80s street-style (aka "old school") skater so these boards all really let me lean into that style. Enjoy Italy! I'm off to Trieste and Venice next weekend for two weeks and you know I'll have my board with me. Great stuff dude!
They were the boards I first skated. Never felt comfortable on popsicles. For anyone that carries on about not being able to flip them etc. watch Chris Hiett or any old schoolers.
Wow what a blast from my past this shape board is. I got my 1st one in 1989 Was a cheap nasty piece of crap with plastic trucks and plastic wheels 😂 I swapped out the wheels for my sisters rollerskate rubber ones, then snapped the trucks doing ollies off a 4ft wall. Some local teen saw and gave me a spare pair he had. Snapped the board within 3 weeks doing ollies off the library roof. Thankfully I got given a proper deck
I have a quiver of shaped boards and Popsicles. Last weekend I picked up a heroin 10.25 inch Curb Stomper with 225mm stage 11 indy trucks and OJ wheels, rides like a dream at the skatepark. I also have a 9.125 tactics board it's shaped but looks very similar to a popsicle, just more comfy to ride, on 185mm indy stage 11 tricks and spitfire 93a wheels, it rides like a popsicle flip board but also a cruiser at the same time and is perfect for skatepark, for the road I have a santa cruise cruiser, santa cruz pintail 33inch and a 44 inch no name longboard
Rails also protect your board from wear and tear of concrete/tile copings. I’ve been going back to skateboarding, but after 12 years of break my balance ain’t too good and having size 13-14 feet I think wide cruiser board might be a better starting point than 7.5 techy street board I used to ride back in 2000.
Iam riding an reissue old shool ripper 10x31 from Powell peralta with new dragon formula gbones in green everything like I had in my good old days and Powell ripsticks aswell for sure, but with carver trucks....so definitely need one with normal trucks 😁🤙 Oldshool boards best colours and shapes of all time ❤
Hey Dan, nice Video as always👌🏼like your advice and how to videos, just startet skating again at 35. currently riding a 8.38 egg board from Heroin, first trick was an ollie and just learned how to pop shuv yesterday🙌🏼
Currently riding a long board looking to start doing tricks on an old school board, your video inspired me to take it to the next step. Maybe I’ll re watch your vid and try my luck with the no comply first 🤟🏼
I'm currently riding just a regular popsicle 8.5. but I've been really interested in shapes and curious about them. The first trick I want to learn is the no-comply I really want to learn that trick for a while.
im currently riding a beat up free board i got from a random kid buying a new one, i have no idea what board it is but if i got an oldschool board i would learn to boneless 360 or no conply 180❤
Another good point about adding rails is that is does save your graphics! I remember going to a local shop in my early days (I was riding Hook-Ups decks at the time) and I was concerned about the graphic getting scratched up and the folks recommended to get some rails in that case.
Hey Dan love your vids! I ride a popsicle 8.25. Im know lots of people who ride shaped decks and love them too 🛹 if I won I’d love to learn 180 no comply 🤞
Great vid as always. Currently got a revive deck and I hate it! Being an old school (old) skater I'm not used to aggressive concave and I can't get on with it at all. First trick I'd try to learn on 1 of those would be a boardslide down the flat rail at leiston 😉 also need to ask you something about escapism, I'll message you on FB 😘
Not sure if you’ve already chosen a winner to giveaway a board to or not. BUT I think that board is really sick. My currents set up is a Powell Flight deck with Ricta Speedrings, bones reds, and thunder trucks. And gaara griptape that YUNG WAVY personally sent out to me If I had an old school deck from you the first trick I would do is a tre flip So clean. Then I would make a ton of youtube videos with it
currently riding a mike vallely powell peralta reissue and ive got indies on it that are too small. struggles of a broke teen but learning ollies on it are so much easier imo and i reckon im gonna learn on it for the next few months. seen serious progress with that shaped board regardless of the small trucks. double kicks are fucked for me idk why
Thinking about getting a similar set up 31" Cruiser oldschool design like this. I am almost 40 tho and haven't riden in 20 years so not sure if it is right for me
I been skating a generic twin tip for perhaps close to 30 years (started on a fish tail in the late 80s, I guess). My wife started skateboarding at 39 (big up her) and has almost the exact same Heroin fish tail. Every time I have sneaky little go, I wanna pivot to a fish tail as my standard set-up. More versatile and performing than I could imagine. Guess I'll go for a Heroin as well - love them, and need to stop coveting my better half's! Would probably try and get my bonelesses back first! Currently riding a placeholder Flip popsicle so old and stickler covered I can't remember a thing about it.
To me they aren't cruisers. Back in my day they were called skateboards. I actually ride a 1977 Alva reissue and it's hard to go back to a popsicle. They are definitely fun and always put a smile on my face.
That heroine skateboard is old-school inspired. Heroine is a fairly new company. I like their boards, but I really like re-issue boards especially. Mostly set up as cruisers. Plus they’re functional for tricks too. Also I have a few Popsicles, so no hate on Pop boards either 🛹🔥👍
Shoutout to all of us who started on boards like this in the 80s and then felt pressured to ditch the rails and get popsicles in the 90s. Long live big boards!
I'm nearly 60 live in UK thinking of going back to skateboarding when I started doing it when I was 5 in 72/ I'm thinking of getting Powell Peralta Powell Peralta Andy Anderson Heron 2 (Rust) Skateboard Deck 8.45'' or Santa Cruz Skateboards Salba Witch Doctor Gold Reissue Skateboard Deck 10.4" or Powell Peralta Rodriguez Skull & Sword FLIGHT 192 K21 Skateboard Deck 9.26'' or
Santa Cruz complete cruiser. Unfortunatly already 90s shape, narrower and over 32 inch long. I want my old school deck back! I'm 47. Actually started back in like 88 with a Tony Hawk Street.
hmmmm. there is no way that board is lighter than a popsicle.....unless your are normally skating 9" or bigger popsicles. also that board is an eyeball mini i think. its 9" x 32". that is the exact length of most popsicles.....I guess it may feel shorter in tricks but it isnt....and its sure not lighter. Heroin decks are some of the heaviest boards you can buy. Just saying
I ride a KDF board with Thunder truck and the rest idk any more XD. I can Ollie, but not over things. I really don't no why i can't do that and i'm currently learing a Shove It
My main go-to set up is a Heroin Curb Crusher XXL with indy 215s n 64mm dragons. I've got a bowl setup too, which is a Winkowski Volcano with 9" tensors n 60mm Winkowski slimeballs.
I currently skate a Arbor Pistola complete which I love, didn't have to change anything on it, it rides great straight out of the box. Also just put together an old Variflex Eric Grisham deck I've had since the 80's. I've set it up with 78a. 60mm wheels to make it the perfect pump track board. 😎
Old school Steve caballero 29.75 by 9.65 15.15 wheelbase 169 indys Powell peralta rat bones 60 mm 90a Or Santa Cruz slimballs 60mm 95a on smooth pavement I love the retro boards IM CURRENTLY TRYING TO LEARN FRONTSIDE 5-O
I am currently riding a black board actually I buy it from my friend cause I can't afford new full set. The first trick I want to learn is 360 flip riding in switch and heel flip that's my weakness and I want to land it
I'm riding a Santa Cruz slasher shaped board and its currently breaking and the nearest local skate shop is 2 hours away and I really need a new board.and shaped boards are my favorite.
I'm ridding a primitive board 8"1 inches with mosaic wheels (a not very famous brand) with bones redz. Some thunder trucks and pizza griptape. If I get the board I will probably learn no comply 360 on it
Hi!!! My name is Owen Andersen i am a skater from long island new york, and i love crueser boards!!! If i had one i would love to learn no comply tricks and no comply variations, ive been watching you for a while and i love the style of your videos: not too long and verg interesting. Im not the best skater but ive been trying manuals and manual variations and some ollie and kickflip tricks.
Hey there Currently riding a tight booth sometimes 8.125 pop socle board I would surely go on FS 180 hard work if I would win this kind of old school shaped board Cheers and enjoy your trip in Rome
Hosoi-Picasso 89' Santa Cruz reissue. Set it up like a totally rad cruiser. Tracker Losi trucks 161mm Bones Reds, Globe conical wheels 62mm 78a, 1/2" Psycho soft risers. The only thing I considered doing differently was extending the wb from 15.5" to 17" What trick? That steep, tight 8 level parking garage. Top to bottom with a slide around a few of those corners.
bro if you talk about sizes of the board, would be better to mention what sizes they are... I looked that one up and it has a 13.25 wheelbase which is CRAZY short, would try though.
I was in my late teens when kick nosed skateboards like you're riding, became a thing. Before that, most skateboards had a flat nose about 2 or 3 inches long. My favourite board back in those days was the Powell Peralta Caballero bats and bones mini (and I forgot how much of a mouth full that was).
Hi Dan I’m riding a 8.13” Toy machine monster pop sickle deck with new Andy Anderson nano wheels. I’m trying to add speed to a boneless but is proving really hard!😮
Ive never considered these shapes cruisers since they were shredded by everyone until the popcicle shape came around. When i thibk cruisers i think longboards or the tiny 60s boards
Just got a 8 inch stock skateboard not a longboard as their too big and heavy but it came with wrong wheels so I got some 60mm wheels as the footpaths and roads are terrible to skate on I’m not really too bothered about doing tricks apart from riding up ramps and that so looking forward for those arriving tomorrow
I’m riding a Revive popsicle 8.5 deck with element trucks/wheels and reds bearings. I recently got into skating and the first trick I’d try to learn on that board would be a no comply impossible….that is if I don’t learn it on my current board 😂
Yoo Dan, OMG you are in Italy!! Glad to see you in my home country bro! I lived and grew up half of my life in North Italy, the other half here in London! You'll love the food there, enjoy the real authentic 'carbonara' made with 'guanciale' in Rome! Talking about old school board, last time I visited my mum in Italy I found my own very first skateboard in dad's tool shed, a Santa Cruz Rob Roskopp the one with the target eye, I believe it was 1990 or 1991 when I bought it, I was 13 or 14 at that time!!! Yes I'm an OG!! lol Even after more than 30 years in the shed, the deck was still alright tbh, I was shocked when I saw the trucks' base were made in plastic, yes really! but the hangers were aluminium!! The bushings obviously were all crumbled so I decided to restore it! I removed the old grip that kinda melted with the board but I managed to remove it and sand it clean it. Also the trucks and board had the old school holes so I had to get new trucks with both old-school holes for it. But I didn't get normal skateboard trucks for this restoration project, I decided to get some 'Mindless Talisman II Cruiser Longboard/Skateboard Trucks' as I already have a standard modern popsicle shape skateboard in London with indy trucks. And I wanted to try my old-school Santa Cruz deck as just a surfskate/cruiser board as like you said the board shape is much wider (more than 9.60" and made for cruising! I still haven't mounted the surfskate trucks I ordered for it, I believe I will have to mount them with the kingpins facing outwards for that, I still haven't finished the restoration project as my old deck is still in Italy but when I do I'll send you a pic of it on IG if u like! 😄 My current setup is a Powell Peralta Levon Biss Wasp 8 inch deck with Independent Stage 11 Mason Silva 139's with PP Dragon Formula wheels 56mm, and I love my current set-up so much rn tbh! Enjoy Italy bro! Peace and Love ❤️ There are no strangers here, only friends that you haven't met yet! Be lucky 🍀 bro 😀 Btw I absolutely love the Poler Camp Vibes t-shirt you are rockin! CIAO!!!!
Thanks for the vid! Currently got a golden 8" DGK deck and it's nice but far too long for little Asian girl me. Every no comply trick I've ever tried to learn I ended up ditching, because the deck would smash into me so much the leg was purple for weeks. If/when I ever get a shorter deck I would love to master the strawberry milkshake or no comply impossible.
I love shaped decks. Used to be the only things I’d get! So steeze and perfect for skating bowl or barriers. Right now I’m riding an 8.8 popsicle stick Santa Cruz VX with 77 Ace trucks, the Bones Formula X97 in 56mm with my Forever Redd Pro Swiss bearings! I be zooming and hitting crusty gaps big time.
I am currently riding a stock board from local skate shop called Hot Wax. The first trick I want to learn is to manual
You in Pennsylvania? Does that shop have anything to do with Chris Cole?
Did you do it man

My current setup is a Powell Peralta Levon Biss Wasp 8 inch deck with Independent Stage 11 Mason Silva 139's with PP Dragon Formula wheels 56mm, and I love my current set-up so much rn tbh!
Enjoy Italy bro! Peace and Love ❤️
There are no strangers here, only friends that you haven't met yet! Be lucky 🍀 bro 😀
Btw I absolutely love the Poler Camp Vibes t-shirt you are rockin!
CIAO!!!!
Love the vids, Polar 8.5 Aaron harington. And my first trick would be an ollie, still trying to learn that😊
Supreme shortboard
I be zooming and hitting crusty gaps big time.
what is this exact deck?
