Im a more mature skater (42) thats just started about 7 weeks ago, love watching these clips as they really do help. I try and skate every day even if its just a 15 min skate to work and back. I skate parks when i can as much as i can and i even got myself another deck just for carpet. I'm totally hooked

People always made fun of me for having Walmart boards as a kid. It took me like 6 years to learn how to Ollie and one day when I was a teenager a guy at the skatepark gave me a complete flip board. Still one of the best gifts I've ever received. It did take some getting used to a board that rolls more than 5 ft and didn't weigh a ton. I wouldn't say it helped me be a better skater but it definitely brought my confidence up and that helped me learn so much faster

3 and 6 really resonate with me, and I'll tell you why.
I fell in love with skateboarding as a child in the 90s. Growing up, my heroes were Rodney Mullen and Bam Margera. Over time, I discovered Ritchie Jackson, Andy Anderson, Ishod Wair, Rob Roskopp and Mike V.
So, as you can imagine, my style was a weird hybrid of street and freestyle, with bonelesses and wallplants thrown in for good measure.
Throughout my entire skating life, people would ridicule me for the freestyle and 'circus' tricks, which forced me to work harder on my flatland, and learning various things such as Fakie Sex Change flips and so on.
People would make fun of me a lot, probably because I'd practically whitewash them in games of SKATE.
These days, I'm a bit too fat and ill to skate, which is why I took up fingerboarding.
Hopefully one day, I will make a full recovery so I am able to ride again, despite my age.

My board control is okay, I’m great at kickflips and boardslides, I can drop into most quarter pipes, but I’ve felt like I’m at a ceiling for a long time. Your tactic of learning 100 tricks a year is inspiring and your overall mentality towards progression resonates with me.

You aint lyin about small cracks/"ledges" in the concrete being skatera worst enemy.
I skated as a teen from 2001 to 2004, then picked back up in 2009. My younger cousin had started skating, and one day skating with him i thought, "Let me show him how its REALLY done."
I went to do a simple sideways powerslide, like id done a million times before.
I pushed up to mach speed and started skidding the back wheels around to slide.
What i didnt notice was underneath me, the pavement had a tiny "dip" which created the smallest drop in height.
As i turned my body to do the slide, that dip cause my front foot to come off the board and contact the pavement while my body was still turning(still at mach speed)
I heard a pop and i fell over. I looked down at my left ankle, and it was facing the WRONG way.... whoops
I broke and dislocated my ankle, and ended up with screws and plates holding it together. That pretty much got me off a board for the next 10 years. Until now
Im seriously considering getting back into it. In my older age, i really need something to become more active outdoors to get myself in better shape.
I briefly considered mountain bikes, but I dont have a connection to that like I did to skating.
I think if I invest in some good safety gear, ankle and knee braces, and dont ollie down stairs and loading docks like i did at age 14(and NO powerslides!!!) and just focus on cruising/some small curb and manny pad skating, I should be fine.
If you read all that, thanks, and thank you for making this video, its helping me psych myself up to get back on board!

    Well dam
You were lucky at £30 for a complete
When I was a kid and started in the early to mid 90s
You could only buy a complete built deck
    and they started at £100.
I was in the same boat and grew up poor so I had zero chance of ever getting one bought for me so I got a paper round and a weekend job on the local market saved my money and bought a santa cruise complete.

@@fabi___n5277 you can get a decent £30 complete these days from Element. There's nothing wrong with them. I bought one to come back to skating, took it to a mini and was able to skate it fine. Having someone with you to show you what to do, try out your board so they know how it works, watch you skate, tell you what you're doing wrong, and hype you up, really helps

Also, just tightening wheels without the bearing spacer makes them sit hard AF. You don't need any fancy extra things for that. Or if you have some washers the size of the bearings you can even replace the bearings with them to make a non-rollable setup.

the 18 tip is to forget everything in the skateboarding world and only follow antihero, watch all there videos and buy there shit because its the most real skateboard team there is. They are the essence of skateboarding, what it is and how it should be!

Ngl, I don’t agree with the setup one, having a good board that has good pop and grip tape helps with actually doing tricks, having good bearings makes it so much easier to skate around and not get tired and to be able to have more time to set up, and then proper wheels are also important, super small wheels are gonna have the same problem as shit bearings, plus having really soft wheels or the improper wheels(like longboard wheels tryna do tricks) make it hard to learn, bc one of those beginner tricks I feel like is reverts and Altho not impossible with soft wheels I think are definitely easier with hard wheels

Trucks don’t matter tho, at least not to the point of hindering you unless the bushings are bad in some way shape or form that makes it harder for you to learn

    • @joelsanchez2776

@@markvickery5894a lot of cheap boards have plastic or very weak trucks that snap or bend on impact so they can’t handle too many flip tricks

A confession a while back i got bombarded by your short content in recommended and I didn't give it a chance and assumed you were a prick. That's wrong of me I've now been watching bits and pieces and you're a chill guy and a positive influence in British skateboarding. Still not inspired me back onto a board though

    # 2 is real but im just starting out ive tried some different boards they are all old but the one i use has bad bearings so i know thats why i cant keep speed. Also im getting new bearings soon

The set up really does matter, it can really hold you back if you have for instance a too small board for your lengths and weight. Talk about bushings, makes the whole world.

Wait a minute. I thought when I turn clockwise (because I am goofy) my 180 is Frontside because my back truck moves to the Frontside. Is that wrong ? :(

yeah but no biggie cuz i snowboard and frontside vs backside is basically just are you turning forward with your shoulders (frontside) or are they going backwards (backside)
