I agree, though when I stop to think about it I really do like the ending of Crystal Skull. It's a very happy ending. Indy gets his job back, his name cleared, marries the love of his life, and will have time to connect further with the son he didn't know he had. He has a family and can spend his twilight years in well-earned peace. Crusade's ending was better, but damn all if Skull's ending doesn't work as well.

He has actually used this phrase a couple of times in other Pitch Meetings but this was the first that actually had the same iconic actor playing his iconic character being upstaged and replaced in his iconic franchise in the exact same manner. They just stopped short of killing him and you know they filmed that version but backed off because they realized they were making a “Star Wars” again.
Fans were predicting Indy was going to die since the movie was announced and Harrison has said Indy dies with him, no recasting, no reboots (sorry Chris Pratt) so you know eventually the scene/version where he stays in the past gets leaked. Unless they already destroyed it. Release the “Indy stays in the past” cut

@@TheSmokingMustache That might actually have been the problem because JRD is an Englishman (Welsh background, I think, and only 78, btw 😉), not an actual Arab. This is really baaad nowadays because actors are only allowed to play exactly what they are in real life (meaning Sallah needs to be played by some dude who has a Mediterranean background which they think is close enough to being an Arab) and that is not the case with JRD. But he is a beloved iconic character, so he still had to be in the final movie (which, honestly, is the only reason I'm considering to watch it at some point when I don't have to pay extra for it). Now, what to do? Simple: Just put him in for a short moment.

Make original stories and characters to push "the message." Leave original characters alone.

Well that's what happens when you keep trying to carry on 40 year old franchises that didn't need to be carried on. You couldn't recreate the magic even if you brought back the entire original cast, because they're all in entirely different place in their lives (when they aren't, y'know, dead.) And it also means any new cast members have to try and fill those shoes. Which in a movie that's built on nostalgia, is going to be basically impossible.

And Indy 5 is looking like it won't make anywhere near enough to break even (I believe its budget was 300 million, and its current income trend is looking like it might gross $450 million at best by the end of its run which would be a $150 million loss.)

1:34 -- The bit about how "when you bring back an old character people love, ya gotta make them sad and miserable" reminds me of a bit I wrote in a fan Pitch Meeting script I wrote for the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."
"WRITER GUY: Well, Harry doesn't get along with his son and he's having recurring nightmares and his scar hurts again and his job is super stressful. You see, Harry is kinda like the magical attorney general and he just recovered a stolen super-powerful Time-Turner, but Hermione is his boss and she yells at him for not reading a report.
PRODUCER GUY: Wow, didn't Harry Potter used to have fun in these things?
WRITER GUY: He sure did, sir.
PRODUCER GUY: So does grown-up Harry get to have any fun?
WRITER GUY: Well, Hermione offers him a toffee.
PRODUCER GUY: A toffee? Not even, like, a cool magical candy?
WRITER GUY: Nope, just a regular old toffee.
PRODUCER GUY: I guess that's...kind of fun.
WRITER GUY: But then Harry says he can't eat it because his wife won't let him have sweets.
    PRODUCER GUY: Oh, my God."

When Indy was never cleared for suspected murder it definitely reminded me of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull when he was never cleared for suspicions of espionage. I guess that's just a thing that happens to Indiana Jones now.
I was glad to find out, though, that a 70-year-old being shot straight through the shoulder doesn't cause them to bleed out. It barely impacts their ability to engage in action sequences.

My God, he was cleared of the charges off screen. On the one hand people complain that modern Hollywood doesn't allow interesting and complicated storytelling, on the other hand the same people complain if minor plotpoints are skipped or assumed. If anything, the charge was stupid to begin with and all that was needed to clear it had always been one conversation with the police. Really not something I missed in a movie with 155min runtime.
