    Original Description:
    Indiana Jones is one of the most iconic movie characters of all time. Along with his role as Han Solo, playing Indy is one of the defining works of Harrison Ford’s long career. So, in an age of constant reboots and sequels, it was kind of inevitable that Hollywood wanted to bring Indiana Jones back to the big screen. And with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg both on board, this had the makings of something great! Unfortunately yeah no it didn’t work out that way.
    The movie definitely raises some questions. Like why are we focusing on aliens? Why do the good guys and the bad guys have the same goal? How did they think the nuke fridge scene was a good idea? How does Shia Laboeuf befriend monkeys so quickly and swing through the jungle faster than speeding vehicles? Why did the FBI decide to stop investigating Doctor Jones despite absolutely nothing changing from their perspective? What’s going on with Cate Blanchett’s voice?
    To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

    • @userusernomi
      @userusernomi ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@TristanCleveland on my very limited knowledge, I know sometimes not everything is on a bid system because sometimes a certain studio is known for their particular expertise and so they'll be specifically selected for certain shots. But for that very same reason, I would think there's not gonna be a movie where they hire only one VFX studio because it's always better to hire them for what they're particularly good at (or how cheap they are, I guess). Not only that, but having a studio do all the shots for one movie would mean that studio would have to use all of their resources just for that project, instead of being able to work on multiple ones at the same time, so it wouldn't be good for anyone.

    • @englishatheart
      @englishatheart ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I mean, the fact a person will put in less effort if they're making less money shows both sides only care about that. I'm an artist (and very low income) who's sadly never been paid for my work. But when I do art, I don't put in less effort even if I know I won't get paid for it and even though I see some atrocious art actually make money. Because I care about my work and won't put out art I'm not happy with, especially if someone is paying for it. Don't get me wrong, as someone who knows it's fucked up to force humans to pay to exist and work their lives away, I don't agree that it's okay to force any job on someone only to pay as little as possible. Every person deserves a livable wage and a non-toxic work environment. But, if you're getting paid to do a job that is based on something you claim to be passionate about, I don't see how anyone could be okay doing a poor job.

    • @RBoobitydoo
      @RBoobitydoo ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@englishatheart That's how burnout works. You end up being forced to be okay with terrible results because management doesn't understand and some asshole just wants more money faster... and after a while, that causes a LOT of lasting psychological damage. It's the same in any creative field, even ones you might not consider creative, like software engineering. We don't get "okay doing a poor job" -- we get forced to do a poor job that reflects poorly on our skills and it grinds down on the passion to the point where you're a husk, doing mindless work in this lovely capitalist system we've got. *barf*

      It’s part of the heavy „let’s overdo all Indy tropes till it hurts“ approach of this movie. It’s there with the fridge, Indy movies have such over the top scenes, but this one goes to the top of them all. The other ones he showed from the chase scenes are similarly, they remind me of earlier movies, but like overdone to the extreme. And the ants try to do the same with all the creature scenes from earlier movies, similar but way beyond the mark it is supposed to hit. The kind of „tropes but to the extreme“ is even there with characters, like Mutt being the overly annoying son and Indy‘s friend being a triple agent or whatever that was supposed to be.
      That’s why the movie is generally bad, it kind of tries to be hyper Indy to an extreme where a parody would have worked better.

But the other movies stayed kind of within the boundaries of the source material Indiana Jones emulated and even a magic priest like Mola Ram may be scientifically absurd, but his motivations and his kind of evil can be understood easily. The ark and the grail on the other hand stayed mysterious, but are as religious items also not supposed to be rational, so they can be (ab)used to further the „enlightenment“ of the characters encountering them, because that’s what religious artifacts are supposed to do.

      It’s true, you can even see some of Ryan’s guest stars struggle with these lines a bit. Granted, Ryan’s been practicing his delivery for years (you can see some awkwardness in his old videos). I’d hate to be a guest actor and try to match Ryan’s energy on my first stab at a video. But to have to sit through a non-professional comedian attempt the bit while completely changing the situation so that the gags and catchphrases no longer have any proper context, AND doing it live where he doesn’t have the convenience of editing to enhance the jokes…I feel kinda bad for that father 😅 seems like he was doing his best, though. Actually in VFX, the bidding studios have to actually create a Short to prove feasibility. So bidding studios spend around $30,000 (I believe I heard this from Chris Do of Blind Studio) on a minute or two short to prove they can, and if they don't get the job, they don't get recouped their spend, so there is a considerable measure of risk. If you notice, VFX houses actually don't last very long and can be out the door by the time the movie they were working on hits streaming.

    Producer Guy: All that experience with combat and survival in the jungle will definitely help out Mutt in the future if he ever finds himself in a similar situation. Involving combat. And survival. In a jungle.

    12:20 RYAN IS ACKNOWLEDGING IT!!!!!
    It's someone else's comment, and not mine that I've been asking for for 3 years, but at least he's considering it!

    I only saw this movie once so sometimes it is hard to remember exactly what made it so bad, the aliens at the end were definitely a problem but it was so many other things before that, and then Ryan reminds you of everything in a couple minute pitch meeting. 😅

      I did enjoy seeing Cate Blanchett in a bowl cut with an Russian accent
      Just as hot as she was as Hela

      Oh the aliens are such a massive issue, Nazis melting by opening a box, Indy being possessed by blood, Indy saving his dying dad with holy water, all those things are ok but aliens are too much. Aliens are the most possible real life scenario compared to those things you spastic.
      You indy snobs are the worst type of people.

    “But what if money” is also what happened With the Matrix trilogy, it had a perfect ending: Neo and Trinity both sacrificed their lives to end the war and save Zion…….and then 2021 came around and the terrible 4th matrix movie came out. It was made for the sole purpose of money and that is soulless so shame on the executives! but I still love the Wachowskis don’t get me wrong. I owe my childhood to all the people who worked on the matrix Trilogy

    How come you focus mainly on newer releases when there are still so many older movies that would be perfect for Pitch Meetings? Examples being the Shrek franchise, some of the older Pixar movies like Cars, movies like Armageddon etc. Not that the recent movie-pitch meetings are bad, I'm just curious why you don't go after some older films that would be great for them.

    I've been watching a ton of Pitch Meetings lately, and I notice that, up to about 2018, the conversation sounded more natural. Since then it's become more stylized, which I think works better for the comedy. Was this change a conscious decision, or something that just developed naturally?

    Re: the CGI discussion, along with the issues mentioned, something that often happens after the artists have been hired & the project is started, the client adds extra requests and changes that the artists have to deal with (usually without increasing the timeline or budget). There was a special effects company that won an Oscar, but went out of business due to these kind of issues in the industry. 😦

    What's with the long explanation at the end with you beating up on yourself and clarifying a point about vfx where I never thought you were attacking them personally? Your viewers have brains. It's just those few that are the loudest that make people apologize for nothing. They deserve hot pillows and cold showers.
