- "They've probably, captured or at least there's images of several hundred Russian troops who have been kind of caught up in this as prisoners of war."
Russia's failure to halt Ukraine's incursion into Russia will cause 'doubts' in the Kremlin as Ukraine takes prisoners and land in Russia's Kursk region, RUSI's Director of Military Sciences Matthew Savill tells Kate Gerbeau on Frontline.

I am having a difficult time understanding Putin's comment that Ukraine's attack at Kursk is a "large scale provocation". Russia attacked the Ukraine 2 1/2 years ago, was that a "provocation"? Not its war! Why is Putin surprised?
Came here to ask the same question! I guess one man’s ‘special military operation’ is another man’s ’large scale provocation’.
I hope for Putin’s sake the provocateurs don’t find a massive dam….. they owe ‘em one.
Putin is a sick man

For one, Putin is like many other dictators, despots, He' is completely deluded.
To Russia, neighbours capability to resist their possible invasion is provocation.
Of course, this is NOT a Ukrainian invasion of Kursk Oblast. It's just a Special Military Operation.

They should hold a "referendum" there.

At what point does Putin throw the towel in. The loss of life is beyond comprehension.
Putin doesn’t care about the loss of life. It’s part of the Russian mindset after losing millions of men in WW2 - casualties don’t matter.
A "strongman" does not lose a minute of sleep over 500.000 dead. He is just worried about the hardware really.
Maybe just maybe your starting point is completely wrong, ask yourself how whoever informs you of this tremendous loss of Rus life came to this figures, then ask yourself how is it that an otherwise intelligent educated subject such as yourself could so eagerly accept this data with literally zero evidence, then ask yourself is there anyway a different fact could convince you otherwise or is it regardless of the facts you are resolved to believe whatever figure that puts a smile on your face and solidifies your "belief"that Russia is a relatively incompetent civilisation most inferior to the one you belong to

There may be a higher psychological impact of those prisoners on the Russian public opinion. Those captured soldiers appear to have been draftees in border forces, not those frontline prisoners or contract volunteers used by RF on occupied territories. These draftees can be from everywhere, including big cities, not the usual Russian reservoirs of cannon fodder, which are poor regions with ethnic minorities : Bashkirs, Buriats, Daghestani, etc. These have no public voice, outside of the major "white" cities. The fate of draftees sent to "secure" borders may have more impact with those city dwelling middle-class ethnic (whatever this means...) Russian parents, whose voices count most, even for Mr P.
What is even more important... they already caught the main relay station of GAZPROM near Suja, from where the pipeline leads into Hungary and Slowakia, the 2 countries and "members" of the EU, that blocked aid to Ukraine as well as Finland's and Sweden's NATO membership for quite some time. Of course, that does not hinder Hungary and Slowakia to still take a lot of money from the EU to support their countries...
