The National Anthem of Ukraine was officially adopted on 15 January 1992 by the Verchovna Rada after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the official lyrics were adopted on 6 March 2003 by the Law on the Anthem of Ukraine.
Originally a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Kyivan ethnographer Pavlo Cubynskyj, it was put to music by a Ukrainian priest named Mychajlo Verbyckyj after he was inspired by his poem.
In 1863 was the song first officially published.
