      Aragorn7884 yeah, great question - with the increased production and export time it kind of seems redundant. We’d just be upscaling a bunch of the video to make it match the gameplay. And our viewing data suggests people don’t watch higher than 1080/60 much. Also the files would be much harder to transfer between our team. As it was our capture person recorded around 10 hours of gameplay for this one.

    As a dev I have mad respect for anyone taking code from even 10 years ago and remastering it. I develop server side software and usually it's easier to rewrite everyone from scratch even if the language is still around. I wouldn't even know where to start if I had to use for instance python2.4 and update it to python3.8. C/C++/C# have been mostly backwards compatible but usually if you want a really good remaster you will have to replace libraries, replace the graphical stack, audio stack...etc to match the newer operating systems, I'd rate it harder than developing a regular game at that point because you have to pick and choose what you need to rewrite but still towing the line of what is a valid update and what is something you are just doing for ease of development.

    • @TheKins
      @TheKins 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      A lot of the original source code was uploaded to GitHub by EA in order to facilitate mod support. If you look at it, the first thing that will strike you is that it's EXTREMELY well-commented. Pretty much everything has a paragraph-long comment block prefixing it explaining what it's supposed to do. While porting legacy code to modern systems is still pretty hard, being able to clearly know exactly what you were thinking decades ago must have made the process much smoother than it usually is, or might have been.

    • @cfehunter
      @cfehunter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @Shane Fagan
      To be fair the source code for the game is mostly the same as it was back in 1995 (confirmed by assembly analysis). There's a kind of MVC relationship happening in the remaster, where the remaster sits as a view layer on top of the original code, it only communicates to the old code via a very small interface layer that forwards the UI interactions and retrieves game state for drawing.

    My favorite thing about the remaster is how much it looks and sounds and feels like how I *remember* it, rather than how it actually was.
    The rose colored glasses of nostalgia and childhood imagination will smooth out pixelated sprites and fill in detail thats not actually there, and what the sprites look like in the remastere is how I remember the old game looking because of that. It perfectly captured that.

      It was a shock to everyone in the community when it happened as well. This remaster exists purely because of the love the fans have for the franchise, and the community keeping it's voice loud, even years after all hope was lost. It just speaks to how great these games are.
    I'm getting a little emotional watching this. Just seeing all of the love that went into making this happen, seeing Frank talk about the music, and Petroglyph saying it was "music to their ears"...it's such a special franchise to me. I discovered CnC 1 in 1998, at just 6 years old, but I never looked back.

      Devs are really passionate people. I'm sure that even if you talk to the WC3 Reforged people they will be as passionate, but for all possible reasons they were not able to make a proper remastering without destroying what already existed.
      At any rate, this was great fun. I'm popping off to buy this just to show my support. To some extent, I wish they would make new games rather than visiting old ones, but preserving history is also important and this is a really good way to do that.

      @ashleygoggs5679 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shingshongshamalama its not that, its more along the lines of EA wants to rebirth a dead franchise in order to milk it dry again. They know theres millions of fans out there dying for C&C so why not give us what we want and create hype so they can monetize it once more. Business wise it makes an incredible amount of sense. However will they kill it again or will they allow the franchise too flourish once more? I mean if they actually let C&C flourish it could have the potential to show against SC2 as an esports game, which too me is what EA should be thinking about and this way everyone wins.

    • @kwizzeh
      @kwizzeh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ashleygoggs5679 RTS games are considered niche now and aren't the powerhouse they once were ten years ago. It would be a difficult sell regardless of esports asperations or not. But just because it's difficult doesn't mean it's possible. EA has shown that with a hands off approach, there still can be lots of profits to be made. Respawn's last few games lately has been largely free to do with what they wanted for their games and proof that EA can layoff on interfering development. That would be the best way for C&C to flourish in the future. Just let Petroglyph do what they want to do - within reason, not an entire carte blanch - and it's very likely to be a hit.

    I love the idea that they recreated unit animations from squinting at the blurry pixelated original. They did such a great job with the art upscale. The authenticity is astounding. The music is on the same level.
    The CG videos are a bit rough though. The FMV upscale worked well, but doing that with the CG rendered ones just made small blurry videos into big blurry videos. If there was any single part that I'd have been happy seeing remade, it would be those.

    • @damsen978
      @damsen978 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's because it was done by the very same team except for the sprite-work, they had the original vision of the games and kept it that way (like avoiding adding in engine sounds into vehicles, 10/10 decision) while making the obvious improvements needed in 2020 like matchmaking and what not. This is exactly how every remaster should be made, plus, they had the original game's concept art so they filled the details they could not back in the day, which is awesome, that's why it's so well done, it's also thanks for how transparent they were with the community, makes me wish every other remaster was done this way as well.

    • @Peylix
      @Peylix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Honestly, those didn't bother me one bit.
      I think it adds charm to the remaster and further solidifies the end product being super well done. For me, C&C's Remaster is one of the better remasters to have come out in a long ass time. Not remake (before anyone want's to chime in with RE or FF haha).
      I grew up playing both C&C & Red Alert. Played those two games more than any other as a kid and seeing the original blurry/pixelated CG clips gave me a huge wave of nostalgia. I think part of the reason why this remaster worked so well is because they kept it as close to the original as possible. Even if that means not having CGI rendered by 2020 standards like an action film.
      It works and does it's job quite well.

    This game changed my life. This game changed everything. The remaster could not have been handled or been done better by anyone. It’s literally perfect. Just seeing and hearing Frank talking about the process of recreating the audio and sound fx brought tears to my eyes. Stylistically, cinematically and artistically - this game is absolute perfection. The nostalgia factor is so high its off the charts. I just feel so blessed to have been able to witness it from inception to its current remastered status, and to have played and have the ability to play a game so iconic as this one. Words cant describe the feelings I have about this project. Its just so so immense. I’m so happy I lived to see this.

      Oh 100% there will be. I’m sure is very early in dev and if anyone in the community knows they are under heavy NDAs. This remaster has gotten high sales, crazy praise from press and fans, etc. EA now has a hit on their hands and remastering others make sense. Maybe announcing remasters and then a brand new game in the style of the originals. Doing it all at once would generate massive hype. They seem to, at least for command and conquer, open to the modding community so I see in the future built in modding tools and making modding a bigger thing.

    As a huge C&C fan from back in the day, the team behind the remaster have done a fantastic job on all fronts (although the CG does indeed look pretty dodgy - would love a scanline option which might make it more pleasing). The gameplay decision to leave it pretty original, the wonderful audio work done by Frank Klepacki (which only makes an incredible soundtrack even better!), and the superb graphics work, which I now know was done by Lemon Sky (huge props to them for knocking the upscale out of the park - I've seen so many old games lose all their atmosphere and cohesion when being redrawn) are all spot on. Open sourcing the code was the icing on the cake. I'm so glad this release was made as it was!

    Just wanted to thank you guys for the Documentary and also the whole dev team involved in the Remaster. C&C 1 was one of the first "big" games on PC for me, so I have very fond memory of it. The Soundtrack always stuck with me, I loved the genre, starting with Dune 2 (sadly EA doesn't have the rights to do a Remaster of Dune 2(000). I got a review code for the game, but went ahead and bought a steam copy as well, just cause I wanted to show my appreciation. Sadly it wasn't easy to get a physical copy of the game in Europe/Germany, otherwise I would have wanted to buy that one as well. I also appreciate the Documentary and Frank for mentioning the German version of the game. I played the Remaster in now uncut, just to keep that old feeling up, usually I play games in English these days.
    I think they did a great job and put a lot of effort and love into it, which some other Remasters were sadly missing, not gonna name them, but RTS fans will know ^^ The installation was so unique and hooked you to the universe right away back then and that they brought it back in a way was just one point that proved how much they and the community members involved care. The old EA logo in the main menu, being able to click on the "secret" spots in the main menu to launch the dino/ant missions, etc. Not to mention the special Kane video ahead of launch, including a hidden website link and so on.
    Thanks NoClip and thanks EA, Petroglyph and Lemon Sky Studios for this Documentary and bringing back one of my "childhood" memories in that way. To this day I already spend more than 30 hours again with the Remaster, the only sad thing is that, I didn't get a hard copy of the game as a collector.
    Hopefully we'll get a Remaster of RA 2 and Tiberian Sun next, maybe with better quality videos and I'll be happy (until a somehow hopefully happening Dune 2/2000 Remaster can happen).

    When I first heard about the Remaster, it was already well under way, and I was guardedly optimistic about how it was going to go. The more news, images and gameplay video that came out, I went from guardedly optimistic to full on excited. Like many gamers, I didn't fully trust EA to do this right. A feeling that stung even more because I remember EA from back in the 80s being one of the best game companies out there. It seems to me that EA has figured out where they've gone wrong and are taking the proper steps to rebuild the trust that us older games once had with them. While I won't get ahead of myself and proclaim them absolved of past grievances, they are at least, forgiven for them. Between C&C: Remaster, and the upcoming Star Wars: Squadrons, I haven't been this excited to be a gamer since the late 80s.
    Like many other people, I am also hoping they take the same path with Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2, even though I've never really been a fan of RA. I will gladly buy it to get TS, just as I did to get TD. Hell, I've bought pretty much every PC version of those two games that have been sold. The original versions(Win '95/98), The First Decade, The N-64 version(had to get those N64 specific missions), The Complete Collection, and now the Remaster.
    So yes, I will say to EA: Thank you for having the foresight to do this one right! Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 in a few years(even though no official announcement has been made).

Not to do downplay the work of everyone involved but to give the visual credit where it is due. This whole experience is a "by gamers, for gamers" project and I'm still at a loss for words to EVERYONE involved. Also, go deeper into the community involvement. Community members from all over the world were involved (not me), track those folks down. I'd love to hear the stories of those community members who love the series. First experiences, lasting memories, what kept them hooked, who they are as people, and what kept them hooked for so many years. I live in the middle of nowhere but I still remember the day I walked into a CD shop (when they existed) and saw a guy in a long dark green coat full of NOD badges. I thought "I'm killing everyone in my home town but who the hell is this guy? He'd likely murder me in Red Alert". Find those members... Find that community... I'm sure I'm about to share one of the most unpopular opinions ever, but as someone who adored Westwood from the beginning, eagerly anticipated the release of each of their games, and played them for countless hours to this day, C&C only got better after EA took over.
      Well, I still haven't really played Generals, and C&C4 was a huge misstep, but Tiberium Wars was such a massively dramatic improvement over prior games, it's hard to overstate it. They went on to make such smart choices in refining the design and flow that, despite all my love and nostalgia for Westwood's formative offerings, RA3: Uprising is easily the pinnacle of the series.
      With this revival of the franchise at hand, I'm not just excited to relive Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 in remastered form, I can't wait to get a new C&C game that takes its cues from the games EA had left off with.

    Man the memories this game and age of empires brings back is insane. Red alert 2 probably has the most hours on any game I've played.

    And I managed to grind through the Tiberian & Red Alert campaign missions to unlock all the bonus content just this weekend... weeks after it launched and after I installed it 😅
