  • Monday 19th February 2024:
The problem with a log burner... is that you need a plentiful supply of logs! And they need to be dried before you can usefully burn them. Hence people have wood sheds and stacks. The purpose of a holzhausen, is to form a circular stack of logs, which is open on all sides, so the wind can blow freely through it. That will accelerate the drying process and reduce (theoretically at least), the length of time before you can burn the logs.
I started building this holzhausen on the site of a previous one I'd made a year ago, which I dismantled last September. The wood from that one is now completing it's drying inside a wood shed.
While making this video, I tried to get some passers by to help me, but as you'll see, that didn't turn out too well!
Then the weather changed and we had a few days of steady rain, - so I wasn't able to do any more work on the holzhausen this week. Never fear, once we have a break, I will return to it and continue videoing the remainder of the build.
Hope you'll enjoy the video - and the funny bits I've added!
    Jeff
By the way, if you do enjoy the video, then please consider subscribing - it really helps me to grow the channel!

The shape of your holzhausen looks great by the way and am so sorry about the interruption by the rainfall! 😢😮😢

Thanks as always Angela! 😊 It's not a perfect circle (mine never are, actually), although some people take a pen, attach a piece of string, and draw one out on the pallets / ground, before they start. This one is a little elliptical as the pallets, when placed, form something of a rectangle, so I tried to utilize the space as best I could.
Our weather has been so varied recently... very cold yesterday, foggy out there today, but I was lucky that I chose Monday to go out with the Brompton and rode along a canal - it was quite a bright day and you can see that video from Saturday.
I have recommenced the holzhausen since that rain, so will get it finished before long... and there is plenty of wood left to be split yet, so at least 1, maybe 2, more holzhausens for me to build. Hopefully get them done before Gladys is ready!

Very side splitting funny Jeff. Sorry the rain stopped play. It has been a very wet winter.

Hi Jeff, I was going to say that you need to get out more 😀 but you do get out a fair bit. Seriously enjoyed the start of the new Holzhausen 👍

Thanks Iain! Yes, I'm very lucky to be able to get out and about as much as I do! Glad you enjoyed it - there'll be more of the same stuff in part 2 👍

Hi Jeff, rain stopped play. Good quality large tweezers are a must 😂😂😂, that line cracked me up. I imagine that Scottish gentleman "wood" have jumped at the chance to help you if there was a payment forthcoming. Love the humour Jeff. Looking forward to part 2. Take care mate 👍

Hi Dave, glad you liked it. I was trying to impersonate a very well known MP but couldn't manage it 😕
On a Cross Country train this morning to ride a towpath.. yes, the Brompton returns!!! Cheers, Jeff 😊

Thanks Dave! Yes, a successful day's filming I think - but you can be the judge of it next Saturday 😊

    Hi Jeff,
There you are with daffodils blooming, sun shinning and bees buzzing lol. Here we are with -20 and an additional 4 inches of snow and overcast. Hummm I wonder which is best?
I have never heard of the "holzhausen" method of storing wood. When we lived in the rural area of British Columbia we made a storage shed from pallets, which worked really well. I will have to pass this video on to some of my friends back in B. C.
Thank you for sharing this idea.

Thanks Mark, yes, but trust me - it was colder than it looked that day! The bees didn't stay out long, I think the sun was striking their steel roof and probably fooled them! And today has been very cold here (not compared to your minus 20 of course!) .
I used the Brompton bike yesterday, along a very wide canal - it'd have been too cold to do that today - catch the video this Saturday! 👍
Ah yes, I've seen storage sheds being made from pallets on TH-cam, and it looks a good idea. Loads of other holzhausen videos on there too . I don't claim to be an expert - although none have ever collapsed, so I must be doing it more or less right. Do pass it on to your friends though - that'd be great. Thanks! 😊

Though I prefer doing outer walls, edges and corners if square stacking. I find it oddly satisfying, to have somewhere that all the twisted unions can go. Unless I’m stacking with Chris, who’s happy to take quite mangled logs of any size.
You’ve some odd characters in your vicinity or were they on a mutual walking holiday - the posh and the Scots. A union no one dares to speak of; though it did give a one in Britain while a six in Scotland.

Know what you mean DC - sometimes a perfectly shaped piece just comes to hand and nicely fills an annoying gap! Any mangled logs - I usually toss in the middle!
Well, yes, you never know who you'll meet in the lane outside our place - I doubt those two fellas were walking together though, as they definitely wouldn't have got along! 😊
