      @
LOL, you never met one of my cats !
His name was Pecos and he would fight you to death if you tried to get him a medicine.
Blankets, thick towels etc were no match for him when suddenly he would turn into an octopus with more deadly paws than you could ever handle on your own.
My other 3 cats were not quite as bad but with Pecos you needed a suit of armor .

Oh, how I know this well!!!
Our Miniature was exactly the same way, so what we did throughout the year, was load used wormer syringes with things he loved (Applesauce being the best), and he got used to seeing it, and liking it.
Then we'd do him 'Dirty' and dose him with the REAL wormer (And the *LOOKS* he'd give us? lol). Still, we always followed-up with treats, he'd forgive us, and life would go on.
    Till the next time.
Rudnik is such a cutey, and I've been enjoying your videos, showing both his and your own experiences! Watching the both of you work together, building a strong relationship (And kudos to your partner, a 'Non-horseperson' for falling under Rudnik's influence!)
    :-)

Carrie! I’m fairly new to your channel, I’m in Ontario… May I suggest you test Rudniks poop at the vet for parasites, anyone can take a fresh sample and drop it at the vet they will tell you the load and which dewormer to use to be effective if he has worms. I do that and don’t deworm. Honestly it’s a best way best no fuss. If you find he has a heavy load of worms then deworm. I find best to keep his space clean and don’t spread the poop in his space just make a compost pile instead. Heats everything and kills whatever in the poop bonus in a year you have amazing compost (only thing no horse can be on any meds to use it on human plants). To me testing poop and not giving meds that stripe the guts makes more sense. The gut takes care of the whole body but we’re condition to automatically deworm twice a year regardless. We know the outcome of humans been given antibiotic now there are super bugs resistant to all bugs well animal parasites and dewormers are going the same way.

Oh boy, I remember trying to help you deworm him once and his violent head tosses lol! I think I went and put my helmet on haha. As others have suggested, save your used dewormer tube and give him yummy things in it occasionally. To start, I've had success with coating the tube in honey or molasses and letting them lick it off. Also, try approach and retreat, where you touch the tube to his cheek and remove it, over and over, until he doesn't associate the sight of it with something bad. You can touch it to his cheek and then give him a treat too. I'd also continue regularly practicing what you're doing here, putting your thumb in his mouth. Transition from that to putting the tube in momentarily (preferably with some honey on it!). Break it down into many small steps and you will have him saying "ah" for his dewormer next spring! :) Titan says his to his former roomie! We dewormed a couple days ago and he put up a BRIEF fuss with a high head, but gave up much more quickly than Rudnik did haha!

Thank you!! Definitely trying that next time and I’ll be doing more practice with the syringe. I might try and puree some carrots to put in the syringe then put molasses on the end - I feel like he’ll accept it but the second I switcharoo on him he’ll never trust me again 😂😂

My horse was an angel about it (he was 15 when I adopted him, so pretty much sanguine about everything), so I really wasn't prepared for the amount of drama from a 19 hand, 2500 lb. American Belgian! Rudnik's antics were nothing compared to the amount of head-tossing, backing up, and trying to rear up. You would have thought that we were trying to kill him. It actually took three of us to get the medicine in him.

    How to dose a horse
    START. Catch horse.
    1. Realize you left the medicine in the truck. Return to parking lot to get it.
    2. Return to pasture to find horse is now on opposite end. How do they KNOW?
    3. Catch horse again.
    4. Fumble with the cap.
    5. RE-catch horse and apply halter and lead rope attached to something larger than the horse.
    6. Put finger in horse's mouth.
    7. Bandage finger.
    8. Place finger in horse's mouth more carefully.
    9. Insert syringe or pill.
    10. pick up syringe or pill from the ground.
    11. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 several times.
    12. Open fresh package. Repeat steps 8 and 9.
13 Call dry-cleaner and ask if Ivermectin stains come out of clothing.
    14. Mix two parts gin to one part vermouth. Chill and drink.
    15. Consider adopting a Burmese tiger. Rumor has it they are much easier to medicate.

Saw in the comments someone say it was worse than giving a cat a pill. Not so sure about that. The vet gave me a big gel capsule to worm my big old male cat. I held him in my arms and tried to get it in the back of his throat the way I did the dogs. We literally rolled around on the ground in the back yard. I’d think I had it down and he’d hock it back out. It was trying to dissolve and he had green froth coming out of his mouth but still would not swallow. I finally said you win this round. I took him back to the vet and said you do it. By contrast my Great Dane was a breeze, open his mouth, hit back of throat, pill gone. But I wouldn’t shove my hand in a horses mouth with a pill.😂 There are somethings no matter how good and how cooperative your animal is that they just want no part of no matter how gentle you are. But why should we expect them to be different from humans because we have things that no matter how good it is for us we balk at it too.

    • @rudniktheroan
      @rudniktheroan  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

😂😂 animals really do keep us on our toes. But you gotta love them. I’ve found my dogs have always been easier to get pills down than my cats. It’s like cats can just shoot it right back up out of their stomach while dogs don’t care especially if it’s wrapped in cheese or meat they’re just happy for a treat 😂 cats make it personal

Even veterinarians have issues! I worked for one who would much rather work with horses than cats. I asked why and he told me about attempting to pill a cat. Maybe what you should do is give him things with the syringe that he would like...apple sauce or carrot puree or something. So instead of only shoving a syringe in his mouth twice a year and it's always something nasty, it's something more regular and only twice a year there'd be one that's "nasty." If the good stuff is a more often than not occurrence, he should not shun the syringe ALL the time. Maybe.

LOL Rudnik, come on now! I imagine the taste is seriously BAD for him to be so resistant to it, poor boy!
I have a few Horrsey friends who have the same issue; one made her own jam and apple butter just so she could hide the wormer or other nasty tasting meds in a pile of the jam or the apple butter, or in apple sauce [also home made so little to now sugar or salt etc added] She used a large melamine bowl, and doled the paste out in several treat-sized servings, which also meant less nasty flavor for her horses.
Another used to hollow out a hole in carrots or apples and gave her horse the treats over the course of their daily work/training.
Rudnik is so funny, tho I know handling his quiet tantrums is challenging, he is still gentle and not losing his temper for real at least!

Maybe 4 hands? I usually hold Luca steady my hubby gets paste in his mouth then he holds the horse's head up while putting his other hand over his nostrils, Luca gives a quick swallow and we're done. Now giving him shots is a whole 'nother scenario 😤
