A Suikoden 5 character ranking video? My god. I actually didn't know about the Ernst thing until recently, so my party wound up being Freyjadour(Prince)/Lyon/Richard/Zerase/Miakis/Cathari. As you could expect...I didn't really struggle, lol. Also, I'll ALWAYS remember what I saw a walkthrough once say: "If you give Zerase a Flowing Rune and a Magic Absorb Rune, the game gives up and lets you win".
The magic absorb rune is op as hell, any character with enough slots becomes a healer if you like or just bombs away. also, some "weaker characters" like zweig and lorelei have the treasure hunter ability that makes faming them easier.
Its hard hearing Zegai is a low mid tier character because he's my favorite character but I also understand. Skill slot wasted because of combat teacher and he usually is the last person to attack and he does miss often. I usually gave him the Godspeed rune so he would hit first and just equip the skill that raised his chance to hit more accurately. Tbh with that stuff equipped he would do very well. Even used him in the final battle and he was MVP
Although she is technically not a star, you should have included Sialeeds just because she is available for so much of the game. Also because I love her!!
She'd probably be around the same spot as Sharmista because of her weapon, but she has one advantage over Sharmista (more availability) and one disadvantage (unremovable Rune).

I disagree on how low Belcoot is. Once he joined my party he never left but I do agree on how bad the falcon rune is this game. Kinda made him a one trick pony but a very useful one
I disagree as well, like he said Richard begins to level off, but Belcoot seems to counter anything and everything once in the higher levels and his abilities are set properly. Not to mention the crits from the falcon rune are crazy and to me seem often.
Didn't know Ernst had that ability. Looking forward to Suikoden 1 and 3 lists. Also, have you considered separate lists for war units? The beavers are bad in normal combat, but excel in naval war combat, as does the dragon cavalry. Keep them safe and healed. Win. Georg is usable in the final battle on New Game+
I would have put Belcoot higher on the list. While he does not a ton of damage, he pretty much parries every melee attack and counters which then also is a critical. get a formation where he is alone in the front and he'll defeat every melee fighter before it even is his turn to act. The ability to be the frontline alone without breaking a sweat make him and Richard awesome. Add to that that many of the best damage dealers and wizards are either effective at both ranges or long ranged and the usefulness goes through the roof.
I just saw this video. Great effort, and thank you for being very informative! I just learned about Ernst because I believe almost any dungeon boss can be one-turn killed with Richard in our party. 😂
The two elves Urda & Isato are god tier when you have them both with boost, double-edge & power runes - Use their combo attack (which hits all enemies) - Bamn! battle over. Battles never see 2nd turn unless it's one of the big boss battles then it might last 2 (especially if you have Cathari runed up the same, Zerase in party with magic absorb) - have all equipped with eyeball rings (1 or 2 to rub it in) to drain health on each attack - never have to use a heal spell.
For me is Josephine well, I like her a lot, lol. And she is always in my party. XD But before watching the video I would say, Zerase, Jeane, Ernst, and Richard.
IMO Galleon doesn't deserve that low. Nick need to leveled to 55 to unlock his potential. His late recruitment is the only problem. The Prince is Uber Hitter, with Royal Paradise and Sacred Oath plus Sun Armor Set.
Actually played it two times, and Josephine is a really strong attack-mage. Even if I didn't like her much when that game was released. Play it and you will see.
If you equip Miakis with 5 Eyeball Rings and a Drain Rune she's immortal. She attacks so much she'll never be low on health and the damage is so ridiculous that that 0.1x damage heal is not as small as you think.
Currently replaying Suikoden V. I'm kinda happy on how you rank the characters. And recognizing great charcter such as Richard, Zerase, Miakis, Kyle, Isabel, Georg. Also, kinda surprissed Ernest was on the top. But somehow disagreed with Belcoot, Hazuki and Zegai not that high. Those guys can dish out some great physical and critical damages.
Great list, thanks for the hard work. The Jeane + Careless Whisper joke had me rolling. What are other games you're considering for your next batch of these? I like Richard too but I think he was placed too high personally. Also Kyle and Miakis always kick major ass. Poor Ghaleon, he looks so badass but winds up only being mediocre. I get a serious human version of Kimahri vibe from him. You have great taste in gals but no Isabel. Lunn is a super likable tomboy for sure.
I would actually argue Norma is deserving of a potential god tier spot. 3 rune slots, multi hits and melts like Miakis and potch finder goes hard when you need late game gear.
I have to disagree on Zegai. I remember that mine was so buffed that he dealt 8-10K damage in the last dungeon. I can't remember what runes and equipment he had but he, George and Nakula are crazy strong. Richard, Belcoot and similar are only second to them. Cathari was insanely strong as well.
The Beavers are so underrated, for me some beavers are quite strong like Miroon and Meroon who have 3 slots. I always have Meroon on my team, and she's amazing! She often does 2-3 attacks and often criticals. She is kinda puny and dies easily, but often the enemy dies first.
I still don't have idea to use Ernst. I know he has the beast run, but his physical and magical stats are mediocre. I prefer Norma, he is very good healer with excellent poach finder skill. I try to avoid Zerase, such a cheating in an exam...prefer to use Viki with her chain magic skill. Sagiri for god sake...she barely can stop hitting with her critical combo...I don't like Rahal at all, he just a copy of Kyle...and we get him later in the game...Change Richard with Belcoot in the same reason with Zerase...Anyway great video...really appreciate that you remind us again with Suikoden series...V is my second favorite after II

did not realize there is a suikoden v video great tier list , But i would put hazuki and belcoot 1 tier higher as both of them literally parries almost any incoming physical attack. Hazuki also has insanely high multiple hit combos ( shame eiyuden does not have multiple hit system) I played NG+ and manage bring georg to the final boss , But he is almost useless as he has low mdf and get blown every turn by the magic attacks Miakis best waifu
I think this is coming from newcomers ahahaha. Eresh has way higher magic and elemental affinity than Levi. Don't even know how Eresh is considered as lower than Alhazred, Cornelio. Not even the mage knights has magic score nowhere near Eresh. About Cathari, I think you never seen Cathari hits like 3k before lol. About Jeane, her Rune Sage ability should easily takes her to top tier. With it, you can easily adjust your rune setup whenever you want.
I do agree that Eresh is better than Alhazred and Cornelio, but worse than Viki, Jeane, and probably Zerase too. Levi is basically a coinflip with Eresh depending upon whether or not you value his magic tutor ability in the field.
on the contrary , for me , josephine and cornelio are the best early game character , josephine can equip boost rune and power rune , while cornelio can equip power rune , boost rune , and double edge rune / crazed , that makes them hit really hard very early in the game , well ofc i replace them once i have access to kyle..
Can not say much about Ernst, cause is one of chars I never used, but Josephine is fucking good mage, even if she has that shitty red rose rune. She is doing hard damage with rage and thunder, she is even one of the persons to use pale gate. And by the way...nobody likes the beavers 😄
IMHO, Georg Prime is always the most OP on SV. I've got him attacking every enemy with his glowing sword and that's 8k 💀💀💀 (don't even mention he's always get weapon defense and when he gets attacked, that's just only 10-20 and 200 max if he's attacked by magic)
Yahr doesnt have 3 open rune slots one is the angry dragon tech....which can be used indefinitely when combined with a fury rune.....side note I remember playing this (S5) after suikoden 3 and thinking "like does everyone in this game have 3 open rune slots"....meanwhile in S3 im grinding Nicolas (from Duke's team) to get 1 slot and he never gets any it turns out....I imagine because combining him with a double strike would be overkill, dude takes 1 damage from everything and thats supposing he doesnt block it with his shield.
Everyone in Suikoden 4, however, can have three Rune slots by farming Magic Rune pieces, as that's the only Suikoden game that ties rune slots to the Magic stat.
Ähm... Josy is not mediocre or weak, her offensive magic is pretty strong, 💪 her magic defense is also strong. If you grade up her magic skillz at Levi she bombs away everything plus she is effective with combination magic
You have several mistakes when it comes to free rune slots. Yahr has 2 free and 1 fixed, Nikea only has 1 free and 1 fixed, Georg has 1 free and 1 fixed. I wouldn't call Bergen a mage whatsoever, he has one of the lowest MAG stats in the game, but he is quite strong, high SKL, and high SPD. I hope you cover more Suikoden games!
Thank you about Galleon, I had to explain that to someone, I said he looks cool but he's old and not even a real tank or hard hitting Mid character. I like a lot of characters but I don't find myself using too many bad ones, gotta have 18 solid. Georg, Belcoot, and Miakis are my favorites. Goesch is one I've suggested to people quite a bit, he's a slept on beast, and has a sombrero not common with Suikoden characters. Love the video thanks for this!
If Richard was on Suikoden 2, he won't get a chance especially during L'Renouille against Lucia, Culgan, Seed and Beast Rune Incarnation. Why? Richard is known as broken parry and most of thoes enemies LOVE to use magic attack which can't be avoided (except with canopy defense and protect mist) will make Richard dies easily.
i like tier list content so i watch this video so many time hahaha. but i think you should put doremi elves even they aren't star. they cann't compare to high tier but i think they have decent stat enough for team without any investment. when i have 3 split team in final dungeon doremi elves carry my 1 team there.
I never use Zerase, Richard, Viki or Ernst because they just destroy all challenge in an already easy game. I assume this list did not take skills into account because Jeanne, Lorelai and Roy should be higher. Rune Sage and Treasure Hunt are way too useful (Zweig has TH as well, but he sucks) and Roy is the only character (aside from Prince) who can equip the ultimate skill. Lyon is overrated IMHO, she is stuck with 1 rune slot for a good chunk of the game
God, watching this video I am instantly reminded of how much I hate Zweig. He was so useless that I considered him the biggest impediment in the last dungeon. Even his look, and I still remember that annoyingly condescending voice acting. I would have put him in the lowest tier, just cause, but that's just me. I'm surprised Cath is so low, Godspeed Rune puts her in the top 10 for me easily. I...did not know Ernest had that ability, I just assumed he could not daze bosses and never even tried. The rankings are agreeable, Miakis is easily the best Queen's Knight. Something I did not figure out until my third play through. I was never a smart kid. I preferred Isabel, Mathias, Richard, Cath, Lyon- of course Jeanne as a mage if needed. I liked Zerase but I avoided using her because she was also too strong. Alternates to Cath, well, I liked Sagiri a lot. Those multiple throws were satisfying. I also liked Faylen. I do not know why, I guess her design is cool. I liked Belcoot the character, never cared to have him in the party more than necessary. I liked Hazuki, she always seemed to land multiple combos and crits for me. I'm surprised by Lun's ranking. To me, she was okay. I didn't realize she was that viable, I guess I never gave her a chance. I didn't care for her weapon of choice but looking back...she did give quite a few multi hits and her magic was good. Funny enough, the more useless battle characters were quite good in war. Like Josephine, for some strange reason, gave you two fires. The beavers are demons in naval battle. The dragons are monsters in naval battle. This video is old, but I'm happy to have found it. Loved this game. I know its not the top of the top of Suikodens, but I loved it all the same. I just...honestly? Lyon is one of my all time favorite characters. Her character, history, and style got me from the beginning.
I was 30 character at the level 99 and nakula and gavaya was the 2 best strong characters in my party for one monster damages.. I am not agree with Zegai after all..
Man, Logg and Goesh are far my favorite characters. I just buff then w/ double-edged sowrd + crazy rune and just auto battles I love see the critcals and 1hit battles I just use heals runes to support All but the prince have crazy runes Its a funny way i like to play And i even said the skills combos.
He probably left them out since none ot them count as stars. My take: elves low tier IF you work on them. Sialeeds I would put mid tier borderline between upper and middle.

Jeane is top tier for the virtue of her rune sage skill. You can adjust runes on the go which enables extreme versatility.

that strat is highly viable with just eyeball rings and double strike\crazed rune. got isabelle doing 2500 dmg per attack and heal more than half

Say what you want but Cathari will always be God tier to me, I equip her with Berserk rune and her damage gets beyond insane

If Richard was on Suikoden 2, he won't get a chance especially during L'Renouille against Lucia, Culgan, Seed and Beast Rune Incarnation. Why?
Richard is known as broken parry and most of thoes enemies LOVE to use magic attack which can't be avoided (except with canopy defense and protect mist) will make Richard dies easily.

Out of curiosity, where would you have ranked the non-SoD fighters like Sialeeds and b the DoReMi Elves. Just the Tiers, to make it simple.
Sialeeds is great. The doremi elves can be good early game.
i like tier list content so i watch this video so many time hahaha. but i think you should put doremi elves even they aren't star. they cann't compare to high tier but i think they have decent stat enough for team without any investment. when i have 3 split team in final dungeon doremi elves carry my 1 team there.

When it comes to pronunciation I’m ALWAYS wrong haha.
I never use Zerase, Richard, Viki or Ernst because they just destroy all challenge in an already easy game. I assume this list did not take skills into account because Jeanne, Lorelai and Roy should be higher. Rune Sage and Treasure Hunt are way too useful (Zweig has TH as well, but he sucks) and Roy is the only character (aside from Prince) who can equip the ultimate skill. Lyon is overrated IMHO, she is stuck with 1 rune slot for a good chunk of the game

God, watching this video I am instantly reminded of how much I hate Zweig. He was so useless that I considered him the biggest impediment in the last dungeon. Even his look, and I still remember that annoyingly condescending voice acting. I would have put him in the lowest tier, just cause, but that's just me. I'm surprised Cath is so low, Godspeed Rune puts her in the top 10 for me easily. I...did not know Ernest had that ability, I just assumed he could not daze bosses and never even tried. The rankings are agreeable, Miakis is easily the best Queen's Knight. Something I did not figure out until my third play through. I was never a smart kid. I preferred Isabel, Mathias, Richard, Cath, Lyon- of course Jeanne as a mage if needed. I liked Zerase but I avoided using her because she was also too strong.
Alternates to Cath, well, I liked Sagiri a lot. Those multiple throws were satisfying. I also liked Faylen. I do not know why, I guess her design is cool. I liked Belcoot the character, never cared to have him in the party more than necessary. I liked Hazuki, she always seemed to land multiple combos and crits for me. I'm surprised by Lun's ranking. To me, she was okay. I didn't realize she was that viable, I guess I never gave her a chance. I didn't care for her weapon of choice but looking back...she did give quite a few multi hits and her magic was good.
Funny enough, the more useless battle characters were quite good in war. Like Josephine, for some strange reason, gave you two fires. The beavers are demons in naval battle. The dragons are monsters in naval battle.
This video is old, but I'm happy to have found it. Loved this game. I know its not the top of the top of Suikodens, but I loved it all the same. I just...honestly? Lyon is one of my all time favorite characters. Her character, history, and style got me from the beginning.

I was 30 character at the level 99 and nakula and gavaya was the 2 best strong characters in my party for one monster damages.. I am not agree with Zegai after all..

Man, Logg and Goesh are far my favorite characters. I just buff then w/ double-edged sowrd + crazy rune and just auto battles
I love see the critcals and 1hit battles
I just use heals runes to support
All but the prince have crazy runes

Belcoot is a wannabe witcher, and Richard is literally a witcher.
You forgot Sialeeds and the elves. The elves are shit tier, Sialeeds is probably in that same range since you can't change her one rune.
He probably left them out since none ot them count as stars. My take: elves low tier IF you work on them. Sialeeds I would put mid tier borderline between upper and middle.
Jeane is top tier.
