  • In this video we show the top five pieces of equipment you need to start an efficient firewood business. We like the Stihl MS 500i, MS 261C, Wolf Ridge Pro 22C Log Splitter, Kubota MX5800 Tractor, a Grapple and a Lamar 16' Gooseneck Dump Trailer.

    I have 2 chainsaws. Just bought them. Stihl ms261 and Stihl ms171. I still have not even used them. I have a van. I have no truck , no tractor, no trailer and no splitter. I am a house painter. I'm addicted to these types of videos

    My 27-ton farm store splitter has a cycle-time of 10.5-11.0sec. I'm getting by with an Echo CS-590, cloned 372xp, and cloned 660. Those saws wear me out. Am thinking of a much lighter 50cc pro saw. For my operation, buying logs makes the most sense since I don't own land. Only other things I have are the basic half-ton 2wd Silverado and 3500 pound axle utility trailer. My bottleneck is endurance to buck logs. Think the lighter 50cc pro saw would help my production? Splitting and stacking is no problem for me. Until can get log handling equipment I'll have to buck logs in a pile. What would be the next piece of equipment be in your opinion? Am paying all cash as I go. Selling wood for now in a roadside stand, goal is to branch out into home heating wood in a few years.

    Great video! I’m trying to save up for the same splitter. I only process firewood for my own use but may get into the sales once I have the equipment. May take me a year but that is my goal for 2021. I enjoy watching your channel keep up the great content.

    I especially liked your comments about the negative aspects of having a processor. It helps to balance out what I normally hear. This is the first one of your videos that I have seen, so I don't know what your logs look like. You seem like an experienced person who knows what he is looking at.
    What I normally see are people who have gotten processors who like them. If the logs are uniform verses irregular is very important. I think that is the problem that you were relating.

    • @jakebredthauer5100
      @jakebredthauer5100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Five cord per week, 250 cord per year, would be 2500 cord in ten years. A processor costing $25,000 would be $10 per cord. That doesn't seem like much compared to the labor and equipment required for alternative methods.
      The newer processors are probably designed better so they don't break down as much. All equipment breaks. You may have experienced a poor quality machine.
      It looks like your logs are fairly straight but of various sizes from small to large. If you got a processor you could leave out the big logs and small ones. The pieces will come out the proper sizes if you use a wedge that produces the appropriate number of pieces such as 4, 6, 8, 12, 16. All of the processors have adjustable height wedges. It is easy to change to a different number of wedge.
      More and more people are using processors.

      The processors for the big logs cost more so that could be a problem if you have many big logs.

    • @jakebredthauer5100

      There is a processor that is like a box wedge so none of pieces come out oversized. It will take up to 17 inches in diameter. It is the Japa 435. I don't know what the price is but it is over $25,000.

    I pretty much have identical equipment just a step or two or three down. 471 kubota with grapple, Lamar 12ft dump, 1/2 ton truck, Stihl 462 and rugged made splitter with lift. I like my 12ft dump because I can do deliveries with it but I can’t haul Kubota or bring in as much wood to process as a gooseneck. Maybe get you a little 10x6 7k Lamar dump for deliveries then you’d be set

      Thanks for watching. I do have my eye on a small dump trailer for those deliveries as you mentioned. I go to some tight spots with face cord loads and my crappy old 5x8 trailer just gets it done so haven't pulled the trigger on a new one.

    you should mention lifting tongs and a LOG JAW for handling logs. makes your back last a lot longer.

    Dave Was wondering if you have ever planted switchgrass with your no till planter and do you have the native seed box?

    I agree with your list, though 5 could be a set of pallet forks without losing too much efficiency. You're correct, the grapple is better all around.
    The thing beginning cutters need to realize is to do as you suggest and start slow and build the business up to support the equipment purchases vs going in serious debt before your costumer base is established.
    You're a nice guy for attaching wood. I seldom did that except for little old ladies who needed it done.

    Great video, I am where you were a few years ago. I am strongly considering going full time on firewood. I have a couple videos on my channel of my processing set up. Check one out any inside is helpful.

    Biggest problem is how to get the wood. If you didn't inherit forest from your parents it is hard to be profitable if you need to buy wood on top of all the equipment. I would love to start this business but it does not look good on paper.

    • @timbertimeoutdoors9836
      @timbertimeoutdoors9836  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, Firewood is a poor mans game for the most part. I do it mainly as a hobby. some areas you can charge more. That's really the only way its going to be worth it on paper.
