Dinky restoration of Routemaster Bus No. 289. Diecast model toy.

The Meccano company in 1971 launched a model of the classic London Routemaster bus. The model was produced until 1978. My copy was converted into an ambulance by some young owner. I supplemented the missing tires in my copy, making additional ones based on the two existing missing front ones. I cast the tires from molding polyurethane dyed black. I also did the original painting and made new decals. The original stickers were made of paper. For the set, I made the original packaging from the first year of production. I used to ride on these as a kid. 122 to school and back, 161 to the shops, 161A to see my Nan and grandad, 61 to my mates house and, just before I got my driving licence and after we moved house, 94 to school....always tried for the upstairs front seat.
I have to say, they were never that clean and shiny, though they (nearly) always had the same number on all sides! 😉

I realise that you like to restore to original condition, but in this toy and many others once dismantled, there is an opportunity to paint white plastic interiors in a more suitable colour to suit the vehicle. That said you have achieved another restoration of wonderful quality and I am in awe of your skill.

that would have been quite the big ambulance if it was real. not very fast, but spacey enough for emergency surgeries, and with some space left for the tea canteen... XD the pre-owner must have found out how to take it apart, unless they placed a drop of white paint inside and shook the model around. but it looks too even and exact for that... kid paintings tend to be the most interesting ones. :)

They produced it for far longer than 7 years ,1964 till factory at binns Rd closed in 1979 , your example dates from circa 1972 till 75 ish, before they fitted the awful wide plastic speedwheels.
