  • A long walk up onto Bleaklow from the Yorkshire Bridge pub for a very remote wild camp at Grinah Stones. Pleasant evening spent cooking my own dehydrated food and taking in the views and atmospheric location

    "pubs have a holding effect"... Yep, I feel your pain mate. Had a similar situation a couple of years back. It was hard to leave the roaring fire in the Strines Inn... walking into the February drizzle toward a wildcamp near Margery Hill. We must all be barking mad! :-)

    You have just made my Sunday Pat.....Bottle of big foot Malbec and watching this old gem........The starting comments about kids and it doesnt get any easier made me chuckle...I have only got one 34 year old and my second grand kid is about to appear very soon and i would die for them without a second thought ....i never think about me because i know deep down that i am a very capable , confident strong willed and multi skilled man BUT i worry a lot about my loved ones and the current state of affairs within the world and freedoms that we took for granted in our generation....Getting out in the Hilleberg is akin to a 6 star luxury retreat for me and being disconnected is a blessing .....you have proved that you cant even escape from 4g here bud but thats useful for watching your class vidz on You Tube.....Really looking forward to your next creative videos and in the meantime i hope you are dancing away with your Mrs ...Thanks so much for all your efforts.

    Just discovered your channel Tim and have now subscribed.
    I wild camped on Bleaklow about 10 years ago. A lovely evening, then next morning the cloud had come down and I could hardly see to the other side of the tent. I walked off on a compass bearing and made my way via Torside Clough and the reservoir to the campsite at Crowden, where I was the only camper. Good memories.
    Best wishes,
    Noel

    Great again Patrick! Your videos have the same holding power as a pub. I am amazed that you can get sleeping bag, sleeping mat(?), sleeping bag, tent and cooking gear all in that rucksack. Last time I camped I had it all in panniers on the bicycle and it seemed like a real load, even lifting the bike onto the train! I will load up my hill walking backpack and see how it all looks. Bus card and senior railcard make all things possible. My wife recently presented me with an inflatable pillow: I will take that as a strong hint (of something!lol). Thanks belatedly for a great video.

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry McGeary Hi Terry yes modern gear has certainly got more lightweight, but the prices have gone up as well. Buying my Senior Railcard was one of the best purchases I made, it encourages me to use the train more and travelling all over. I wish the rail company's could sort things out, should of gone to Liverpool this Sat for a drink but half the journey was on a bus so swapped to Hull only to find out due to strike action last train home ,7 pm so we are going down the road to Chesterfield, should still be a good day out, all the best Pat

I seem to recall breakfasting on Alpen musili when we were out with the scouts but when we went camping in family we used to dine on dehydrated Paella 🥘🥘. I loved it but my wife can't believe that's what we used to eat!! Another great video, very enjoyable.

    Hello Pat. As usual a smashing video. For the first time in many years I finally took the plunge and returned to the hills and choose Edale, what a beautiful village. But I realized that after thirty years although the mind is eager, the body had a lot of catching up to do. It did not help with the weather swelteringly hot and although there were clouds around, none would drift over to where I was standing. Finally came down from Grindslow Knoll back into Edale, blistered foot and aching shoulders with an overloaded back pack. Took two hours to get enough fluid back in my system at "The Old Nags Head" now I understand that "Holding effect". Look forward to your next video.

    Thanks for posting this. Just returned from a hike up there today (from Birchin Clough, via Alport Moor then headed West to the B29 wreckage). Very remote, even more so as the mist dropped on occasion. Didn't see a soul all day. Great to see a vid of the area, so thanks again :-)

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jon yes great area for remoteness, when that mist comes down so easy to get lost as I have found out on previous occasions but still a great area, especially if you like having the place to yourself, all the best Pat

      +Patrick Dickinson. yes, it's the wild and away from everything feeling that's great. I can certainly relate to the "I'm a bit knackered now" statement too. I think it's the fact there's no paths, and crossing all the peat gullies and groughs. Having said all that, I love it up there, watching the mountain hares and soaking in the views and peace and quiet. Looking forward to seeing your next trip.

    Nice one Pat. I have watched this video several times over the years! You walked "miles" for that trip! I'm not sure the bus runs every day any more. There is a Sunday service I have found which goes over Snake Pass and goes up to Fairholms and back before heading on to Sheffield. I've been planning a trek of my own but it needs a return bus ride, so I will have to do it Saturday night for a Sunday return bus trip. Anyway, Thank you for your recent (Dec 23) pub chat video. Looking forward to your next adventure - whatever it is. All the best for 2024 :) Warren

    Hi Pat, Another great vid mate. I was up around the Derwent Dam just before Christmas for a short 9-miler trying to get a few snaps on the new camera. It really is a special place. I travel from Derby to walk up the Dark Peaks n the problem is I do the walks then end up in the pub ( Normally The Old Nags Head - Castleton, it’s a cracking food n ale house) but can’t partake due to having to driving back home. So you’re now responsible for my transition to wild camping starting this spring. I’ve told the missus it’s all your fault 😂 Anyway mate please keep the vids coming as they’re always interesting & informative. A real pleasure to view.

    I had a laugh about your kids coming home in the early hours of the morning. I can relate to that. We’d be going to bed and they’d be going out for the night. Those days are past though. They’ve got kids of their own so they’ll get there turn. A thing I noticed was that you said “tea” for your evening meal, which is what my wife and I say. Our grandparents come to Australia from various parts of Britain so I guess we’ve continued the tradition. There is a tendency now for people to say “dinner” for the evening meal which is what we used to say when we meant “lunch”. Dinner was lunch but seemed to imply something a bit more substantial.

    Great video Pat, all familiar territory to me too. Must have taken ages to set the shots up, going back for the camera, editing back home etc. Watched your other video Marsden to Edale via Wildboarclough, again having to scramble up the gully then go back for your camera must have been a pain, no wonder you were knackered by the time you got to Edale. I think it would be good to do the latter in a couple of stages, perhaps camping overnight at Bleaklow Hill? Anyhow, keep on enjoying the great outdoors and thanks for sharing all these adventures.
