Best part of staying in Manhattan is being able to return to your room for a brief nap and freshen up before heading out into the night for dinner, theater, clubs etc.

I had a $700 spending budget when I went in April. I tend to be frugal anyway on trips, I only spent just under $300. Trains were a godsend compared to other trips I've taken getting around in NYC was a lot cheaper because I didn't constantly have to order an Uber. I paid upfront for my Air BNB located in Jersey City just under $400 for 8 nights. I was located about half a mile from the Journal Square PATH station, $2.75 and I was in Manhattan every day.

I visited NYC in November/2018, and stayed in a 20 dollars day hostel in Brooklyn. Not the best neighborhood, but situated in a walking distance to williamsburg and the bridge. I bought some groupon offers, the ticket to the carrier inteprid (really nice), and saved cash. I also bought the NYC 7 day metro pass, used it a lot. For me the best attraction is the bike ride in Central Park, for less than 10 dollars i rented one nice bike for 3 hours (again used groupon), and visited the natural science and art museums for only a little contribution in cash. Regarding food, chipotle is for me the best bang for the buck, for less than 10 dollars makes you satisfied.

I went to NYC like 3 years ago.. Stayed in the Quality Inn chain.. Like $145 +tax per night. The sub just one block away and in 10 mins we were in the middle of Manhattan. We bought suveniers in china town and eat a lot of cheap food in many food trucks around the city. Walk walk walk.. And yes, we used the sub in a on week metrocard we bought (like 30$ something). We traveled in Oct, so the weather was great, crisp but not to cold and definitele no hot to walk confortable. We have the best time. And definitely need to come back

Union Square, Washington Square, and the Whitney is always free for veterans and their families with a veterans id of any sort. not to mention the many street fairs and parades. I find it quite easy to have a good time for free in NY. The Bronx Zoo and most museums have a donation only day. There is always something going on in this city. Just stay out of Times Square establishments. If you are going to be in the city for a year get a NYC ID you can get a year free membership at many museums and establishments.

I would not stay outside of Manhattan if I was to spend most of my time in Manhattan, the transportation time between those other places, and Manhattan takes a huge chunk of time round trip every day, and not to mention if you get a good location in Manhattan you might not need the subway/transportation much of the trip, with exception to the day of arrival and of departure, not to mention the cost of needless constant transportation takes away the savings you might save getting the place outside of Manhattan. Although if I were to be planning to be in lets say Queens most of the trip, then getting a place in queens would then make a lot of sense! Sometimes I stay in a hostel, yet you have to be very careful choosing those, some of them are way worst than others. So it's wise to check the reviews. I do that before buying any hotel room. It's also best to make sure that the hotel knows in advance any needs you may have, it might be much harder for them to accommodate your needs if you wait until your arrival, like hostels may say they have an air conditioner, yet different rooms may have different kinds of air conditioners, some may be controllable from the room, and some may not be. I need the ability to blow air in from outside, so I need one of the ones that can be controlled from inside the room. Also another tip, the higher the floor the room is on, the less noise you hear from outside, if the rooms are not sound proofed from the outside. Also a tip for hostel bathrooms, if there is an emergency and a bathroom is needed right away, there are bathrooms on every floor, we should not be using bathrooms on another floor unless there is an emergency, yet when we need one right away why not, that is what I do. Some hostels might put people in a room with up to 11 other people, a room with bunk beds, so people should pay close attention to the room details before buying, I could never stay in a room like that.
Interesting, we have 'Five Below' here as well, and that is why I was not going to go to the ones in NYC, they are boring here, one of the last things that I'd expect to find there is NYC souvenirs. I have something new to add to my list of things to do, thank you.

Look at Airbnb for cheap places to stay. You can find great places for less than $100 a night.

About to hit “book” on a four day flight+hotel for my wife and myself. The hotel is in the Times Square area. The flights are both delta leaves our area early Thursday and leaves out late Sunday.
$989. Really just a “backpacking” trip around the city. Trying to cram as much stuff and as much good cheap food in those days. Lol.

Hi Jon. I'm a big fan of your content...using it to plan a trip to NYC this summer. Any suggestions on reliable & safe luggage storage? Our flight leaves several hours after our check out time. Thanks!

I am going to visited NYC this summer as a student on a budget and very frugal as well cheap. I will only eat out once before I go home and make my meal where ever I am staying at to cut cost.
Next I will only do FREE things in NYC if possible and see if I will have fun.
Do you have any apps that is offline for NYC I can used when traveling there and how much is the bus or transit will cost please let me know thanks.

RE: Walking. I was in Boston last year and I'd pull up Google Maps. It would tell me like a 7 minute T ride, or a 10 minute walk and I was like...why don't I just walk?

As a New Yorker try not to walk thru to many places being a tourist. Most people can spot a tourist and you can get scammers in most places

What if I do when I visit is sign up to numerous apps like birch coffee, DD’s best bagel etc and say it’s your birthday during your time in NYC. You can then get free food and drink

Hi I am coming over next month July 21st from the UK to NY for the first ever time. I’m staying for 4 nights at a hotel in Manhattan. Bringing £1,800 with me which is about $2,100. Do you think this will be enough for 4-5 days spending ? As I will be on my own I won’t be going to posh restaurants or bars. “I don’t really drink “. Money will be just for transportation around. Food I’m going to see the Mets plays the Padres at Citi field Friday Saturday and Sunday games. And of course money for sightseeing. Just found your channel and it’s really helpful so far
