As a Brit that lives in NYC this is great! My little tip is the restaurant Manhatta in the Financial District. It’s up on the 60th floor and they’ve got a great bar so you can order a drink and enjoy the views both uptown and over the harbour. Better than paying $50pp and waiting in queues to go up the WTC Observatory if you just want to see NYC from high up…a great restaurant too!
Interesting little known fact, but the New York City museums. For example, the Museum of Natural History, are actually publicly funded. The admission fee is actually a recommendation and it’s considered a donation. As such you could decide what you pay. So if you only wanna pay five dollars per person to walk in, that’s allowed
When I lived in NYC around 2000 I used to take the Staten Island ferry every day to get to Manhattan. I had a temp job for a little while in the Flatiron building doing data entry for St. Martin's Press. Then I had legal word processing temp jobs in lower Manhattan, one place was really convenient to walk from the ferry. I also went to an interview for a SQL Programmer position in the World Trade Center. Luckily I didn't get that job.
Hi Guys. Awesome video, Just wanted to say I was in New York in September, and completely agree, you can spend what you want on the NYC experience, If you want to go to all the tourist places and every skyscraper and see a broadway show. Or do exactly what you have done and walk everywhere and eat pizza. A lot of people are put off by hearing stories about how expensive it is, but do your research and plan your trip and you can have a lovely holiday without breaking the budget. Cheers guys
Was pleasantly surprised of that free ferry to Staten island, definitely a better option than overpriced boats. Also, you can sometimes find decent hotel deals on booking or Airbnb for about $100 per night on Manhattan and save a lot on money and time on commute from more distant areas. You can eat $6 meal deals in McDonald's for some time without terrible consequences as well. In Pharmacy you can find cheap Australian bear for $5 per 2 0.75l cans which brings it about $1 per regular 0.33l can Anyway, NY is a great tourist place for a 3-5 days journey ❤
I did this for real in 2009, with about $200. It wasn't much fun. And $200 probably went further back then. But at least entry to the museums was still a "suggested" donation. 25c for six hours hanging around the Met Museum thanks...
I did a day in NYC solo after a month long tour with my band. I was broke and survived on $1 slices and hotdogs. Just walked around looking at everything for hours, it was like a film in real life. Nuts. Then I had to get on the A train towards Coney Island which was fucking surreal. Waaarrriiioooorsss come out to playyyaaayy! Hahaha! Then i had to get off the train to get some water and it just happened to be at Howard Beach which has a bit of a reputation. I entered a bodega during an argument and I felt so fucking scared. I just wanted to get my water and get back on the way to JFK
I know this feel very well 9:50. But that's why I like this channel; gives me ideas for things I might actually be able to afford. So much better than all the wealth-flaunting TH-cam channels.
Should have stretched the budget to $301, to match the average hotel cost. Would have allowed more than just pizza slices and hot dogs. Or in reality Ethan would have just spent it all on pastry.
I was going to suggest the same, tying it into something tangible like average cost of a hotel room rather than a random number like $250 seems more fun. Great video nonetheless!
Definitely used to at least.. the reference to the hazy late teens hahaha and the casual use of 'bunnin a zoot' hahah classic. bunning zoots is the best terms for smoking spliffs ever
At 19.08 on your blog, which you guys missed, is the setting for the END of John Wick 2 when he is standing in the park, talking to Winston after he kills Santino inside the hotel and Winston says 'stop' on the mobile and EVERYONE in the park stops still, then walks away and empties the park before Winston tells John Wick that he'll give him a headstart before he calls for his head
Every video you guys publish makes me laugh out loud. I’ll be eating lunch at work and giggling to myself while staring at my phone, thank you for all of the laughs.
I only discovered your channel last week and have now binged every single episode. You are both very funny and your videos are incredibly entertaining. I can't wait for whatever you do next
Of all the attractions you saw I think the park on an old trainline is the one that interests me most weirdly Also I'd love to see what you could do with somewhere like Paris or Barcelona on a budget
I actually go there for business a few times a year and hotels have definitely gotten more expensive as of late. One place I have stayed at a few times went from about 150-200 a night probably 2 years ago to well over 300 this year. But yes, it's possible to have fun in NYC for relatively cheap as long as you're not looking to catch a Broadway show or anything like that.
The grid system is really cool once you learn it. Avenues run from 1 to 11 right to left (east to west) and streets run 1 to 150 (or around there) from bottom to top (south to north) of Manhattan so you can immediately know the if someone says 5th and 60th you're going to be in the middle of Manhattan (downtown) and if someone says 11th and 2nd you're going to be on the southwest corner. I've never given an actual address in a taxi in NYC just a crossroad.
Today I had the option of watching either this or autoalex's barn find rolls royce first. I clicked this first. Good to see the budget starting to stretch further, was getting worried at first thinking the channel wasent going to do great.
Just over a year ago, I was in New York for a few days on a budget. The hostel was so bad that I left after one night and booked into a Hampton Inn 15 mins by bus from Penn Station for only $125 a night and that included breakfast and two king size beds. Also did the Staten Island ferry but had a look round the other side and got some absolute bargains from the outlet stores right next door. Lastly, if changing at Howard beach for JFK, pop into the bar opposite the station called The Rail, classic American bar, good prices and free pool, I nearly stayed a bit too long... A McDonald's just off time square was about $18 for my self, still much better value than the sarnie, pastry and coffee near Wall St for $27! I'm in no rush to go back, NY makes Finland seem cheap. :)
Cool lil fact about grand central too is that there's a little square patch of dirt, smoke and grime on the ceiling in the corner of the main area that intentionally hasn't been cleaned since the late 90s I believe!
Just as an FYI to anyone visiting New York, there is a $34 weekly cap on the subway. As long as you use the same contactless payment card every time, any subway ride after hitting the $34 dollar limit will essentially be free for the rest of the 7 days.
My detective skills deducted that you stayed at Chelsea Room NYC and you did alright! My now wife and I stayed with her Dad in the same room in a place callled Hotel Marrakech and it was awful! Almost as bad as the Blackpool Hotel!! Great video guys!
Stayed with relatives on Staten Island back in 2006, did all the tourist stuff for a week. Visited the world trade centre site that was under construction and found it ironic that some Vietnamese people were trying to sell pictures of the planes hitting!!!!
We went to New York a few weeks ago. This video is absolutely the most relatable video based on our experiences. The honking, the prices to get into the Empire State Building etc, I felt like I was right back there watching this. Central Park was beautiful though!
Cannot fathom why anyone would ever want to go to NYC. My dream vacation would be a 50's style vacation driving across the US stopping at places like the Grand Canyon, Museum of corn, Mt Rushmore, the Tipi motel, Robert the haunted doll and the world's largest ball of twine. A tour all done in the Weiner mobile. My dream.
@@Jedi007c6 just dont act and look like a tourist and dont be flaunting like a dumbass.... and you will be fine in the vast majority of the civilised world, including the Bronx
NYC ferry is also a decent way to travel around. Loads of different points to jump on and off. Not as cheap as the metro obviously but its not bad at all. And a good way to view the city.
Great Video guys. It had me reminising about my time in New York. i stayed reletively close to where you guys did and actually had pizza at that cheap place at the end of the video. Good Times.
When we visited in 2018 we found a place called Gray's Papaya, cheap but tasty hotdogs & fruit juice. I just googled them, they are still going, $5 for a hotdog and drink. Fab video as always guys ❤
You can keep the high rise apartment buildings and hotels. A fire ladder is rarely longer than 75-100ft even in New York, above that you might be trapped above a fire.
While I can understand your complaint, I'm not exactly sure what it is that you're doing in the bathroom that requires a great deal of mobility?!? That said, I used to be really poor. I *lived* in an apartment that had a shared bathroom. It was shared with like 15 apartments (all singles but two of them had whole families in their efficiency apartment). It was terrible. I used to pee in a jug and empty it in the morning. I'm also a 'shy pooper' so I'd go days without evacuating my bowels.
Actually you could do an emergency toilet of a 5 gallon bucket and a pool noodle on it. Just use tract compactor bags (They are VERY thick) and a bit of deodorizing cat litter. Tie off after business done and toss in garbage can, dumpster or chute. It's just like a baby diaper, cat litter or the like when being disposed of. Shy bather in your efficiency? Use a 3 ring kid's pool to cat water. Use a 3-5 gal bucket of warm water, use a cup (McD's 32oz works great) to wet down your hair & body. Shampoo/soap up and rinse. It's easy to scoop ut the water to dispose of. Hopefully you have a sink in your room. I've dry camped in some amazing places and still kept clean and comfortable!
These challenges might be more fun if you set a disposable income target for destination rather than an overall total including accommodation. That seems more realistic for the way people actually travel. They’ve usually booked the accommodation in advance and know their spending budget ahead of time. Then it becomes - what can you do in NY on $100, $200 etc. Otherwise it just becomes a series of videos of you guys standing outside the entrance of things you can’t afford to do.
It seems very similar to London...prices are hicked up because of tourism...theres a lot to do for free but even transport to London is expensive and very unreliable
These two are so funny to me because all of their ‘challenges’ are just akin to living life as a normal person lol But fair play, it doesn’t always need to be extreme and it’s an easy watch.
