Thank you for including the tip about the reflecting pools. I've visited there twice and even though I'm not a New Yorker, I still got very emotional there. I can only imagine what family members must feel when they come to visit and remember that horrible day. To everyone: Have some respect and take your selfies somewhere else.

Thank you for mentioning 9/11 memorial! visited in July from Australia and was brought to tears at how insensitive tourists were taking selfies in front of the tower pools. I was so disgusted and angry seeing this.

We visited last Christmas and like you were shocked at the insensitivity of some tourists. We asked a couple of police officers if they found the behavior offensive and they said yes, but to a lot of visitors it’s just an attraction to tick off the list. They also mentioned that measures were put in place because people were carving their initials in the bronze list of victims surround. It befuddles.

    • @rych7852
      @rych7852 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Agreed! Saw the same selfie-wankers at the pools. There are signs outside by the pools to remind visitors that it's an area of remembrance and quiet reflection.
Not just that, but inside the museum, there's an area with various artefacts from the day. The rule is no photography. The staff remind you, and there are signs up. Yet I saw 1 guy still (trying to be stealthy) taking photos on his phone!
      Time and a place!
@John agreed on the Brooklyn Bridge cycle lane. Lots of people just standing in it and then wondering why locals were shouting at them!

I hate to say it but maybe they need to start limiting admission to New Yorkers only, or at least start charging admission to ppl not from NYC in order to discourage tourists from treating it like a tourist attraction. Sad to say but a lot of ppl these days are fully lacking in respect and appreciation

We visited the 9/11 early last week and were also shocked at people taking selfies. We are from the UK and visited the museum and found it emotionally hard to see all the personal stuff displayed. Great video Jon! I think it's really great that you spoke out about the 9/11 memorial. I feel not many people address this issue. About two years ago my husband confronted a group of tourists at the memorial who were not only taking disrespectful selfies there, but also posing with posters showing the planes hitting the towers, it's sickening and despicable behaviour with no respect for humanity. We live not too far away from the memorial so we walk there a lot and we very often see people weeping at the reflecting pools remembering their loved ones who died that day and they deserve respect ❤️

Some good stuff there, Jon. Locating the whereabouts of the conductor on the tube is a nifty tip I shall use. Also, what you said about the 911 memorial is spot on. I went down there shortly after it opened (I think we had to book tickets for it?) and even back then, a small number of people were clowning around like they were at Luna Park. Unfortunately it seems to get worse as the years go by.

Thanks for the subway cardboard tip!!!
If you allow me, I would add one tip myself that I learn on my second trip: “don’t look like a tourist” if you don’t, you will avoid so much people trying to sell you tickets, tours, the pictures in Times Square, the “budists” asking for money and many people trying to scam tourists...
the difference between my first and second trip was simple, I left the backpack at the hotel and when i needed directions I tried to look for them while still in some building so all those people don’t spot me...

So happy you included the bit about the 9/11 memorial. I’ve encountered these types of scenarios often, where people are taking selfies with big smiles on their faces at memorials. I encountered this when I went to Japan as well, at the Hiroshima peace museum. It’s meant to be a place for you to reflect not a place for you take selfies at. I hope people learn that not every single place you visit needs a photo.

Number 1 is so true and I'm glad you said this!! I've been to NYC 5 times since 2016 and it's the one comment I have made every single time! 9/11 memorial MUST be treated with utmost respect and I think selfie sticks and any show of disrespect should be banned in this area. People who do this should be given a warning to please stop and show respect for what happened here.

4:43-This tip also applies to a lot of cities here in (North) America as well, _including_ the city of Toronto where I reside and I'm typing this from. Also, NYC has/is going to introduce congestion pricing, which will eat into your money even more (or just as much as) parking fees.

As a long time New Yorker, if anybody wants to see a soccer game, I want to give you some tips:
    1. New York City Football Club and New York Red Bulls are New York City's official professional teams that play their games at Yankee Stadium (Bronx), and Harrison, New Jersey respectively. Tickets for these games can be as cheap as $15 dollars depending on the opponents. These teams compete in the MLS (USA and Canada's Top-Flight Soccer League).
2: Opponents: If you are seeing another MLS team play, it is very cheap and affordable to see them play. If the opponents is a Latin American team, tickets can still be fairly reasonable. The only time tickets will be expensive to see a soccer game in the NYC area is if European teams, like Real Madrid and Liverpool are playing here, and tickets can start as high as $100.

One thing I didn't take into account when I took my dad to the city last month for the first time... Downtown is an area of town in other places and not usually based on what direction its in. He was so confused on the subway because he thought downtown was in reference to the epicenter of the city not literally down town, until I explained that was how navigation works in the city.
And you're so right about the reflecting pools that's something that really bothered me and my mom on the last trip. we were tearing up at the memories of that day and meanwhile people were hamming it up. Sad, so sad. Makes everyone who comes to visit as a tourist look bad.

Thank you so much for stating your last suggestion. It's a difficult subject and I've seen the same thing all too many times...people treating this somber place like a tourist attraction or Instagram photo op. 3000 people died on those grounds, just everyday people like you and me going to work. For those of you who haven't been there, I highly suggest going through the museum once. Just Just warning, one of the rooms at the end really personalizes what happened that day. Anyone who read those letters or listened to those voicemails will never treat those grounds like a tourist attraction.

These are the cheapest ways from all NYC airports to Manhattan. Skip the $7.75 Airtrain and take bus/subway.
JFK: First get a $33 7 days unlimited metrocard (it pays off after 12 rides) at a Hudson News stand and then head to terminal 5 and take Q10 bus to Lefferts Blvd subway station. Then transfer to a train to anywhere in the city.
LGA: unlimited metrocard is also valid on M60 bus to Manhattan, just make sure to get a free ticket with your metrocard from the machine at the stop before boarding the bus.
EWR: take bus 62 to Newark Penn Station for $1.60, then transfer to the PATH train to 33rd st in Manhattan for $2.75.

    Another museum tip:
I didn’t know there was a Holocaust Museum down near battery park. There’s a special exhibit (extended to Aug 2020) with items brought over for viewing from the camps.
It’s not an easy visit to do, just like the 9/11 museum. There’s a boxcar out front which is just haunting to stand and look at. Suddenly you are transported back to 1940, you can almost hear voices coming from within.
As difficult as it is to visit, it is an opportunity to experience and bear witness to what humans can do to others. Even as an atheist, I fell it was a duty to remember and feel some the horror others experienced so that we don’t do things like this again to each other. Ever.
I recommend not going alone. It’s emotionally intense and being with others you care about makes it that much more poignant.

Hi Jon, we have just come back from our week in New York. It is an amazing place that never sleeps and they love using the HORN 24 hours a day. People get so hung up on using the taxis or using the subway system. We spent 6 days there and never took any transport of any sort. we walked 64 miles in total and believe me we found a ton of different things to see and many colourful characters. Most tourists won't see this because they are either crammed into a box above ground or crammed into a metal tube below ground. People need to use their feet to explore because there is so much to see. There are many different places to eat and if your walking you can knock those calories on the head and eat as much as you want. I do agree that there were a lot of tourists laughing, joking and taking selfies at the 911 memorial. They have no idea what that place means to a lot of people and you don't have to be a USA citizen to feel the loss. Its sad to see there are so many homeless people living rough but surprisingly not begging you for money. There was one incident where we was standing near a street corner getting our bearings as to which direction to head in when a homeless guy asked if we needed help to get to somewhere. We told him where we wanted to go and he told us exactly which direction to take to get there. He told us to have a good day and he turned around to go. I tapped him on the shoulder and gave him $5, it meant little to me (a few quid) but to him it meant getting summat to eat or a drink. It doesn't hurt to give a little when it can mean a lot to some. We didn't have the best of weather but it didn't matter, we had a wonderful time and we met a ton of interesting characters........... would we go again ?....... in a New York minute........ can't beat that New York Cooorrfffeeee ;-) Shame I didn't get to see ya on my travels Jon. Keep up the great vids my friend......... Simon.

Canadian (Toronto) - love videos - and quickly becoming a frequent visitor.
    Got a tip for ya.
I always book a hotel in NJ (as I get to NJ first from the Canadian/Niagara border). I look for hotels within a few blocks of a Jersey rail station. Park for free .. quick rail trip into Penn ... super easy and zero stress.
    But the key:
Get a hotel within a block or two (like the Watt hotel across the street). Close to NY isn't the goal ... close to a station is.

Omg ur comments about the 911 memorial are spot on. I’ve been there and I’ve seen those very issues you spoke about. I thought it was in horrible taste. On a side note I also saw a group of kids obviously on a field trip who we totally respectful and were just doing their assignments throughout the museum. I was blown away by how nice and respectful the kids were. Maybe the teachers gave them the riot act before they went in. Also I never understood the store in the museum. Why would anyone want a puzzle or 9/11 coasters. It seems to me like buying something from a cemetery. But I guess if it helps pay to keep the museum nice I could see that side too.

Awesome video! Recently got back from my first trip to New York and could not agree more about you’re number one point. It felt wrong to see people smiling and taking selfies at the pools of 9/11. It’s a very sobering experience to see what they have done, it gave me goosebumps to witness, so it shocked me to see people doing that. I think it’s very brave of you to mention that in this video, as I think a lot wouldn’t mention what needs to be said.

one handy tip that I got from another channel was to download a copy of the MTA subway map pdf on my phone for reference. Some of the trains don't have the electronic display of which stop they were at, and the conductor voice over the speakers is often discombobulated, so I have found the offline subway map helpful.

Hi Jon, first of all I wanna thank you once again for your great videos and tips! They really made my second visit to NYC even more special! Your down-to-earth presentation style is great and way more pleasant compared to some other NYC-vloggers I came across here.
I totally agree on tip #9 and would add that if you are into basketball and are visiting New York in October, it's easy to get tickets for preseason games. They are cheaper compared to regular season prices and you can still see some high profile NBA stars. I went to MSG in 2018 and to the Barclays Center a few days ago and while both arenas are great, the BC is indeed a lot cheaper and has more local vibe to it.

Hi Jon! I certainly agree on driving and bringing a car to the city. In '18, we had a family vacation to NYC, and we drove from the DC area. We had business in Delaware, and turned it into a vacation. We had a hotel in midtown that offered free parking. I drove there, my wife freaked while wending our way through Manhattan (ha ha ha ha!), and we made it across town without an issue (or a horn). Once there, we used the subway and the bus system for the duration of our stay. (We needed the bus as we were going over to New Jersey.) We *never* used the car while in NY. Using the car in the city would have been troublesome at best, certainly expensive and time consuming. Getting around the city and visiting NJ and Brooklyn was easy and quick with public transportation. I know New Yorkers have issues with it, but it's actually quite amazing how well it works. Between the Citymapper app, Google Maps, and everything else online, navigating New York City on foot and via public transportation is super easy. Loved all of the tips, btw. Keep up the Good Work!

As far as cars, I have a friend in Staten Island and when I visit NYC that's where my car stays. I'll usually get an unlimited weekly Metro card and walk down to the bus stop and ride into the SI ferry to the city. Non resident tolls are really expensive, but if you want to just take a day and drive around and experience crossing the Brooklyn Bridge by car, expect to pay some expensive tolls, but it's fun just for the experience for the hell of it. The weekly Metro card fits my needs and I recommend getting that for anyone that's going to be spending several days in NY and going out and about, instead of paying as you go and then trying to use your card and there's no money left on it.

Great video Jon. The last tip should be a no brainer, but unfortunately there are people who don't respect the site. I remember when 9/11 happened. It was late night here in the East Coast of Australia. I watched the events in disbelief through the hours. I debated whether to wake my family as I knew that this was going to be an event that changed the world forever.
When Mum and I went to New York in 2018 we went to the site. I took a couple of photos of then reflecting pool and I just stood there and took it all in. I thought about that day and what those poor people went through. I also reflected on the emergency services that did all they could do to save people, they are heroes! I also recall how the reflecting pools drown out the sound of people talking and the traffic nearby. It is a truly moving tribute to an event that changed the world.

Lots of great tips in this video. Here’s another one for you; If I’m driving and my final destination is somewhere in Manhattan, I park in Jersey City at the Newport Center mall. Cost anywhere between $10 and $15 depending on how long I’m staying. Then it’s just a short path train ride into the city.

If anyone is going to visit the Statue of Liberty, please do NOT buy tickets from vendors on the streets. You can take the FREE Staten Island Ferry which passes by the Statue ( both going to SI or coming from SI) as the ferry makes it's round trip journey..
At Castle Clinton ( the brown circular building) inside Battery Park is where one would OFFICIALLY buy tickets for the trip to the Statue and Ellis Island...If you are a City Pass, New York Pass, or New York City Explorer Pass bring your card to the prepaid ticket window in order to get your ferry ticket. Remember, AVOID ALL TICKET VENDORS ON THE STREETS OR IN PARKS ...BUY ONLINE OR AT CASTLE CLINTON.

I've been watching your channel since January when I started planning my upcoming December trip but this is my FAVORITE video so far for sure because of Tip #1. I have previously visited Manhattan (and had an AWESOME trip) but this time I will be traveling solo vs w/a partner and although I live in a big city and have navigated public transit alone before (locally), I will DEFINITELY take advantage of your tip to travel after dark in the first car with the conductor! Thank you!!

I was in NYC first week of october. The 9/11 Memorial was such a sad place for me. This place has so much engery - as if you could almost feel, what was going on there in 2001. But I couldn't believe my eyes, as I saw so many tourists, that where taking smiley-selfies all around the reflecting pools. That made me sad and angry!

  • @shaunevans5332
    @shaunevans5332 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Wasn't ready for the reflecting pools. Didn't expect to have such an emotional rush as we walked in there. Was totally ok like 10 seconds prior
I just remembered looking at one name for so long and wondering how many lives that one lady would have affected and them looking up and just seeing the names lists that never seemed to end. I prayed and moved through trying so hard not to lose it. Seeing people caught up in their own staged candid Instagram selfies made me sad. Sad for them they lacked empathy, kindness and respect, instead locked into the goal of a little hit of dopamine for getting an Instagram like. I love taking pictures in NY but a camera was not on my mind there

😑I can't believe it even has to be said about not being stupid & disrespectful at the memorial...they need to have signs that remind them to be respectful, no loud talking, taking selfies etc. I know they wouldn't necessarily help but it'd be worth a shot.😔
