Love that you're doing this, Dennis. Awesome start here. I actually scheduled my sleep study just last week after your comments on Facebook. Though now you have a bit nervous, I'll be honest. What if they prescribe a Philips? What do the other 60% of folks use? Will insurance companies let you switch? Do the other brands of machines have the same issue(s) and they just haven't issued their own recalls yet? Questions there are many. :) But for now, thanks for starting this channel!

Thankfully, you can’t even really get your hands on Philips’ NEW machine, which doesn’t use the same kind of sound abatement foam and is not recalled-and was conveniently released right before this announcement.
Most DMEs in my area are switching to ResMed. Which is good, because they’re amazing machines!
There’s also F&P, but they’re not quite as common. Also, not as fully featured.
If you need CPAP, straight up ask your sleep doctor to write the Rx for ResMed. Most don’t have any other choice right now, but it’s still worth asking.

Why so few subscribers? Sure, leftylanky is great (I subscribe), but like you said, you have only *your skin* in the game.
About Phillips, about a week ago I got two rather frantic emails and even a phone call from them. But it wasn't really Phillips. It appears to be some company they have outsourced damage-control to. And I don't like the sound of their questions. What I want to hear is 'what is your mailing address?' Instead what I am getting is things like 'when did you start using your CPAP?', 'did your doctor or respiratory therapist advise you to keep using the machine?' and other questions that are clearly meant to weed out persons for whom they think they don't owe a replacement. So, I am reluctant to even reply. A year ago I bought a Resmed machine, disgusted.

You can use a clear spherical plastic filter to catch the black stuff. Plug it into your CPAP and your hose into the filter. Replace when the filter looks dark. They're about $6.00.

De-fomed my unit by drilling two 1/2" holes on the inside of the air chamber box. I then used mechanics picks to pull the foam out through the holes. I then plugged the holes with medical grade silicone plugs. These plugs are used by people who have ear gauges.
CPAP runs just fine and operates as it is supposed to
I don't foresee the jackwads at Philips doing a damn thing about it. The clearly don't care about the people utilizing their machines.
My other rant is that the suppliers of other CPAP makes have jacked their prices up to almost double. Nothing like raping patients during a CF created by Philips.

If my apnea weren’t so durned complex, I would be doing the same. Given that my therapy is dependent upon micro-adjustments to pressure, though, I’m just not convinced that defoaming the machine wouldn’t muck with the differential pressure sensors in the casing.
If I can get a good look at some flow rate data comparing a carcinogenic machine to a defoamed one, I would consider it.

Had to spend $1240 yesterday to buy a new BiPap, they (for now) are refusing to replace/refund the unit because their warranty was expired, not due for a new one until January. I only found out about the recall after the blower in my dreamstation quit....... because the inside (turbine) of the blower was dusted with powder from the foam and the bearing was pooched, I opened it up. I do not use an ozone cleaner, I clean the hose and mask and replace the filters regularly

I'm currently in the process of trying to figure out how to get my hands on a new machine. Fortunately, I only need APAP, not a bi-level machine. Unfortunately, I don't have the $750 a new ResMed AirSense 10 would cost, assuming I could find one.
Also unfortunately, my desperation got the better of me yesterday. I snatched up what I thought was a steal on an unused AirSense 10 Autoset for $200. Seller claimed she bought it for her dad and he refused to use it, and she just wanted to recoup the copay.
As soon as she had my money, though, she deleted her FB account. And Facebook support's response is basically, "LOL! That sucks. You're dumb."
My wife tells me I can get my $200 back via a Visa fraud claim, but it's gonna take a while. In the meantime, be careful out there, gang. There are scammers taking advantage of this situation.

I worry for those who will need to buy (or have bought for them) new machines, there has been a microchip shortage for the past few months, it has hit the auto and computer industry hard. I don't know how long it will take for new machines can be built to meet the needs of consumers, or if Philips can mass produce new (for lack of better term) blower boxes to replace the ones containing the foam.
I did disassemble mine to look at the problem, in my deramstation. the foam is inside of a plastic case, factory sealed, no way to open it. (there are videos on youtube) You can use a dremel or drill to open the cavity and remove the foam with pliers and reseal with tape. My problem was dust had gotten into the blower motor and destroyed the bearings , motor was ruined
Be very careful if you do decide to open it tho, put mine back together, lost the display screen. I wasnt very careful putting it back together

@@AdventureswithCPAP Good to use another layer of fiscal protection like Paypal if doing biz with another individual. I've bought machines successfully from private parties listed on craigslist in another state before.
and say, if your life really is at stake, could be you should use standard cpap rather than apap, The apap doesn't actually do anything much for you, if you already know what pressures your other one has been feeding you. Download Oscar and analyze your data through that, far better than the philips programs. If you think you'll need to go 6 months or more without a machine - which is easily possible as halfassed as philips is - you really should consider using a machine which has had the foam removed, running in CPAP not APAP mode, since the CPAP algorithm would be unaffected but any more complex therapies would be affected by the lack of any sound foam. And until then, for gosh sake use an outflow bacterial filter... I reckon those will be in shortage soon too.

@@AdventureswithCPAP The deals can be out there. Ah for the halcyon days of cpapauction.com
But it's also possible to find a lot of machines out there in peoples' homes, since half of people get them and quit using them after a few weeks. Unfortunately many of those will be recall respironics, but some won't be. Craigslist tells people not to sell outside their city so some people won't, but it may become the only place to find one after awhile. I expect a serious shortage, which is why I bought a cheap cpap for the wife for cash the first day I heard of the recall. Also, I can report that if you buy a dozen at a time you can still get those bacterial filters through amazon, but not seemingly in lesser quantity... but I imagine they'll be gone in a bit. Might be good to lay some in, you can use them as trade goods in the post-apocalyptic no-cpap times to come. Seems like one could also make an inline filter with a bit of ingenuity, but might as well buy 'em while they're available. The good news is that those can probably ramp up production a heckuva lot faster than the machines.
BTW, lest I come off as all superior, I lost money to a scammer trying to get covid meds.

Linda, I feel you. So hard. I feel this in my soul.
I talked to my DME this afternoon, and asked if they intend to carry ResMed machines anytime soon. He said their plan is to ditch Philips entirely and migrate to 100% ResMed machines, hopefully by the time the new AirSense 11 comes out.
In the meantime, I asked him what would happen if I bought my own machine. I'm looking at either getting a ResMed AirSense 10 from lofta or waiting for the 11 and then paying for it on installments (since Blue Cross is not going to help out). My DME told me that if I did that, I would eventually be able to register my machine with their offices for the purposes of insurance compliance (for supplies).
Hopefully you can work out something similar. I know lofta has the A10 in stock, and I know they'll let you make payments through Affirm. I don't know if that's an option for you, or if it's within your means. But if so, maybe ask your DME if you can register a self-purchased ResMed machine with them?

Hey there. I never comment on anything, keeping my anonymity. But I like that you're starting this channel.
I understand the field quite well, as a longtime user who has been a caregiver for many family members. Feel free to pose questions to me if you like, and I'll give my non-medical-expert but quite-well-informed opinions.
I currently have FIVE machines registered in the recall for the family, and am skeptical that we'll get satisfaction. I was able to anticipate the machine shortage and score my wife a non-philips CPAP before the rush, but my autoSV is harder to replace and not cheap.
It's good to realize, when looking for a temp or permanent replacement machine, that a person like yourself using APAP would probably do fine with standard CPAP and a bit of ramp; some papers even show it to provide better therapy.
Also, perhaps good to realize that if someone has access to a bipap that isn't affected, it can be used as a CPAP by setting the in and out pressures the same. Etc.
As another youtube poster has noted, be careful about entering the numbers in the Philips site... any typo at all and it will tell you your machine is not affected by the recall... even if you type in gibberish it will say your machine is not affected, NOT that you've typed in a string of characters which isn't a serial number at all. This could kill people. If you think your machine is affected it likely is, so keep trying permutations which substitute ambiguous characters like zero and "O", or numbers which are presented in two groups but which need to be entered as a contiguous number. If you want to get whatever dubious fix Philips eventually offers...
    and best of luck.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Don!
CPAP is... okay-ish, for me. It gets my AHIs under 5 for the entire night, but my apnea gets kind of out of control during the third cycle onward. So I'll be at, like, 0.1 or 0.2 for the first four hours of sleep on CPAP, then gradually ramp up toward 16 or 20 during the last couple hours of sleep. APAP takes care of that for me. I have a really tight range (13 to 14.5), but the only way to get those runaway apneas under control in cycle four onward is with 14.5 cmH2O. On the other hand, if I stay at 14.5 all night, I get aerophagia.
So, yeah, I could survive on CPAP for the time being, but APAP with a tight gradient really seems to be much better therapy. Thank goodness for OSCAR!
By the way, my dad ran into the issue with the serial numbers! He called me, all excited, saying that his machine wasn't affected. It broke my heart to have to explain to him that, no, he probably just transposed numbers or swapped a numeral for a letter. When I got him to copy and past his serial number from DreamMapper, that did the trick.
Best of luck to you, too! We'll get through this together!

Yes, your reason for using APAP is a good one and it's people like you they're a good choice for. That said, if push came to shove CPAP would be less likely to kill you than NoPap I think. Insufflation is a real pain, I agree. (I have other issues too, don't we all).
Yeah, my wife's APAP initially came back on their system as not being affected, except I knew dang well that it had to be affected and said so. So after getting the initial machines registered, we set a time to enter all possible permutations on hers and yep, it finally went through. I think their process is borderline fraudulent, telling a lot of people their machine isn't affected when the message should say they'd entered an improper serial number. Bogus. And on general principles i've been using outflow bacterial filters for years "just in case" the machines threw any crud out, and my wife's machine does tend to darken the outflow filter, which I'm more worried about now that they're talking carcinogens.

I've seriously considered it, but I spoke with an engineer at Philips yesterday and he said that was inadvisable for a few reasons: 1) there's a chance Philips might not replace the foam in my machine if I yank it out myself, and 2) if I'm on APAP (I am), the algorithms are all designed with the assumption that the foam is in the air pathway. Remove it, and it would likely affect my therapy in the long run.
I found a new ResMed AirSense 10 that a woman had purchased for her father, but he refused to use it. Never even plugged it into the wall. It should arrive by Friday. In the meantime, I've gotta figure out how to get that data to BlueCross BlueShield, since I'm still in my 10-month compliance window and if I stop using my machine allofasudden, I'm not sure they'll pay for supplies going forward (although that's not as beneficial as I thought it would be).
So, I'm gonna use the ResMed going forward if I can work that out, and once the Philips is repaired, it's gonna be sitting in the closet as a backup, in case the ResMed goes kerflooey. But thanks for the offer!

    • @donwhite2247

@@AdventureswithCPAP what occurs to me is that you might want to find yourself a "system one" APAP - should be a number of disgusted people willing to part with them cheap - and pull the foam out of that yourself to use as a temp machine. The point being that since the foam in those isn't in the air path, removing the foam yourself is both easier and shouldn't muck with the APAP algorithm. I think.
and yeah, if I read it right, Philips will probably use any pretense to deny a recall repair or replacement. A nonworking machine isn't a safety hazard. I like the question "have you ever used ozone" on the recall registry, which might equally well say "click here if you want to be immediately denied help". Not that I've used ozone, but I think their scapegoating of ozone for what's obviously a materials problem is a bit dicey.

Since several were bought used, in fact I can't know. But these folks have known of this issue for years and not disclosed it until the 11th hour, so I'm thinking they'll use every excuse they can find. Then again, if they never told people NOT to use ozone, they probably have full liability so maybe they are prioritizing them.
