  • Recently myself and friend Marty canoed 10 miles of the Chenango river between Oxford & Brisben, NY. The water levels were really low and in one spot we even had to get out and line our canoes. There was quite a bit of debris from past high water and flooding.
    I however enjoyed the short quick water we encountered as well. Lots of bumps and scrapes on our Northstar Canoes but it was a fun day on the river. This would be my first time out this year and it is exactly what I needed!

    Nice Joe - If you ever getdown to S.E. Pennsylvania, I'll take you down the Conestoga.

      @@mrgjoe I do a route that starts in Talmage, Pa and goes to Rt 23. Pullout is at Perelman Park in Manheim Township. Includes two covered bridges, a bunch of class I rapids and tons of bird life, including Bald Eagles.

    Good to see you on the water. I enjoyed this.... looks like a nice paddle. I've been struggling to find Beer Tree's Any Day Haze.... so if I make it down to the brewery in Binghamton I may swing by this stretch of water.

      I like BT's Carving Mountains myself and of course Any Day Haze... A lot of people put in at say Chenango Forks and paddle down to Beer Tree. Not sure of the distance but I'm guessing only a few miles. Thank you for taking the time to watch, I greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you. It has been 15 years since I paddled the Chenango. So many streams to paddle and it would be nice to do some paddle reruns

      Hi John! Thank you for watching I greatly appreciate it. This was my first time on the upper Chenango. You are correct a lot of streams and rivers in the area.

    Looks like you put in near where we took out 7 years ago. We put in about 40 miles upstream. In my notes I mentioned high water and some significant technical rapids. Looks like you guys had a great time.

      Where did you put in? I'd like to do more of this river further north though at some point.

      @@mrgjoe we put in at some bridge near the town of Eaton. We camped one night before the Rt 80 bridge near a farmfield (with permission). Our take out was not far south of Oxford, right where the Finger Lakes trail crosses.

      @@DuctTapeADK interesting I’m going to have to do more research. I so want to do more of these rivers but wish there were more camping.

    Glad to see you finally got out. I had planned to paddle a lengthy stretch of the Tioughnioga this spring, but it hasn’t happened yet. Any chance you or anyone reading this knows a good gauge level to run from Cortland downstream?

    • @mrgjoe
      @mrgjoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you on any of the Facebook groups, like Paddle NY? David Tanner lives in Cortland and runs the mid week sojourns on the Ti for the Ahwaga Canoe & Kayak Club. This is a recent message I got from him. "Do not paddle the Tioughnioga between Messengerville and Marathon. Treacherous spot about 1 mile below Messengerville three channel split with no good options. That, and piled up river debris. I walked it yesterday from Rt 11 and couldn't see down third channel but it has about a 2 ft entry drop and couldn't tell if it was clear after that."

      @@mrgjoe Thank you for the heads-up. I’ve heard of Dave Tanner and the Ahwaga Canoe Club, but have never joined. I’ll look to join the FB group. I’ve read that the section downstream from Cortland to Marathon has some tricky spots, but I wasn’t aware of any up-to-date information. I’ve only ever run from Marathon down to the Forks, and that was many years ago. I remember going for a swim after we hit an underwater log unexpectedly...

      @@canoeingcentralnewyork239 Dave is a great guy, knows a lot about the local rivers. I’ve only paddled the Ti from Cortland to Whitney Point. Want to do the section from WP to the Forks sometime. Want to explore the more of the Chenango north of Oxford. Also the Unadilla river as well

      the gauge at Cortland 3.2 minimum from Yaman, Lisle 1.0' Itaska 2.5'. Downstream from Messengerville but before Marathon it is completely blocked by downed trees & just before Killawog there is concrete in the river that requires a carry around .
