      In all honesty that seems like too much. Wisecrack should be more stylish than other channels that can give you lists. Wisecrack is supposed to make you think, not do the thinking for you. I appreciate this episode giving me a lot of new things to watch that would allow me to think, but would be better for the channel's integrity if a flat out reference list were given to someplace like the Film Theory channel.

    • @OctapezOficial
      @OctapezOficial 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly i dont think we can have a "best show" but i would say Breaking Bad is pretty good, i agree with you with being the best western animated series, but its not perfect, i think Rick and Morty needs more character development, i just finished Bojack Horseman and it turned out to be pretty good, the character development on that show actually made me feel empathy for the characters, a thing that i feel that Rick and Morty could do better, the character development in Rick and Morty is nice, but its nowhere near Bojack Horse, im not saying BJ is better, but i think it could be better.
      PS: Rick and Morty is my favorite show

    • @BothHands1
      @BothHands1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      BothBoat ah yeah, bojack was really good, and i agree their character development was great. As a science major though, i guess i have a huge soft spot for Rick and Morty, though Breaking Bad certainly satisfies that criteria too. It may just be because i saw BB so long ago that i prefer R&M, but they were both great.

    About 'Invasion of the Bodysnatchers' I disagree that's mainly about Communism, I think it's more of a satirical look on McCarthyism. During the time the film was made, the US was terrified of Communism secretly infiltrating the states. 'The Reds under the beds', this of course lead to a lot of people being accused of being communist. Especially those who were move left wing. So I feel the film is pointing out the hypocrisy. The US was so scared of being overtaken by communist, but they also would go after any one who went against the American way of life. The Nuclear family, consumerism etc. Just my opinion on it.

    • @slantedframes2334
      @slantedframes2334 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      McCarthisym wasn't right, and eventually failed. How is it right to arrest someone for having left wing political views, or for the government to have a say in what films can and can't do. Go against anyone who doesn't conform to the ideal way of life: i.e the nuclear family. Hence the hypocrisy, and the satire I read in the film. The famous "They're here" sequence seems very similar to McCarthy first speech way he accused many government officials of being Communist, without any proof?

    I’d like to quickly say that I think the song “The Devil Goes Down to Georgia” plays a big reference in the plot of that devil episode as well. There is even a short clip where the devil plays a fiddle at one of his presentations. In the song, the devil challenges a boy named Johnny to a fiddling contest. If Johnny wins, he gets a golden fiddle but losing means the devil gets his soul. Johnny ends up winning and gets the gold fiddle.
    He gets the devil’s reward and no bad comes to him because of it.

    I genuinely enjoy Rick & Morty. But, one problem I have with it is it's leaning towards nihilism--nothing matters. It's not a strong lean, necessarily, but it's there. And I feel it's one of several popular modern day shows to have this bent. GoT goes that way, though whether on purpose or by accident I don't know. I just know it's one very depressing show where at the end of every season you have to wonder if any of it matters at all. The same goes for Walking Dead, which might just be a victim of stretching out a story that should have ended within 3 season--each season has some good new additions, but not enough of them to justify the negative filler that makes up the majority of each season.
    I've only watched a little bit of VIkings, but it seems to be in the same vein of having character's efforts often result in a null (due to some sudden deaths/betrayals). Haven't watched Sons of Anarchy, but I get the impression it's got the same foundation of pessimism/nihilism.
    Was this all kicked off by Breaking Bad? It still holds up as an amazing show, which doesn't rely on many of the same depressing tactics as many of these shows (just have the "good guys" be continually blocked by bad guys, and have most characters' progress be interrupted by death). Death was still fairly uncommon in Breaking Bad, so that when it happened it still had impact.
    But I'm also left to wonder if even Breaking Bad was really just inspired by something else (a symptom of), a general feeling in the populace (at least in America) that there's no winning. That any good you do is not only countered but actually completely reversed by the powers set against you.
    And while I can understand that feeling, I also find it alarming as a recurring theme in entertainment because it leads to defeatism. The assumption that trying is pointless because success is impossible. But that's simply not true until you decide to give up.
    Meanwhile, this might explain why the Marvel movies are more popular than the competition which tries to embrace that dour theme. Sure, they're also just well made movies. But they continue to have an upbeat feel with a basic message that the effort you put in _does_ count and _can_ make a difference.

      @Hrglspf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Personally, I think that nihilism is the final expression of fully accepting scientific investigation as the way of understanding the universe. If everything is the result of probability and physics, then ultimately there is no order or reason behind events which take place. By completely rejecting religion and the supernatural to explain why things happen you are left with the conclusion that there is no reason why anything happens, so nothing really is important. This thinking encapsulates Rick's character - he looks at everything in terms of the basic interactions of material components. If he can manipulate those components to achieve his desired goal then all he has done is employed natural laws. Because there are no real consequences for an action on a universal level, it doesn't matter whether he's manipulating materials, machines or people because none of them have any inherent value over the others.
      I think most people find this type of thinking incredibly unsettling, because it essentially states that nothing a person does, experiences, suffers through, or achieves has any meaning. If nothing in life has meaning, then what is the point of living? What is the point of society? Rick and Morty uses this to set Rick apart from everyone else and is the basis for a lot of the humour of the show, as well as the emotional struggles of the characters.
      As for why this may be more common in shows today, it may be due to the growing influence of a "science-based" and non-secular mindset in Western society, and the struggle that people experience trying to reconcile it's ultimate nihilism with the significance they attach to the elements of their life. Particularly for deeply religious people, saying that nothing matters completely upsets someone's worldview and challenges everything they've done in life. Until we, as society, reconcile the nihilism of science with the rules and traditions of societies and religions, along with everyday experience, this will continue to be a popular topic in media and a source for debate.
      Personally, I feel that accepting the nihilistic nature of the universe doesn't devalue the human experience, you just have to accept that the rules and ideals you hold dear may not mean anything to someone else. It becomes the burden of each person to find meaning and significance in their own life instead of having it handed down to them. Even though everyone you love could die tomorrow for no reason other than an alignment of probability, it doesn't mean that they are any less important to you or that you shouldn't value them and your relationships with them. You just have to develop a different mindset regarding the events of your life, and maybe employ different coping mechanism to deal with the trials you experience. It also doesn't mean that morality doesn't exist because it isn't "god-given" or come from some absolute source, you just have to acknowledge that morality is the set of common rules of a society which the majority of people agree upon to provide the most benefit to the most people (or at least the people in charge, but that's a different discussion)

      The show isn't preaching nihilism, that would be just dross. The show is describing a nihilist misanthrope and what he goes through on a daily basis to make his life half-way bearable. (Also his grandson, a malleable teenager upon whom all of Rick's shit bears heavily.) In my book, that's one hell of a premise.

    • @360stab
      @360stab 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Nihilism isn't negative by its definition. A lot of people view it a such thinking if nothing matters then there is no point in living(if there is no point then why even be depressed about it.). A more healthy viewpoint would be to think that if nothing you do matters then live the life as you want to, you are free to do anything and also stop worrying about things all together. There is no point but you can give it a point.

      Cooper Rayman you are no longer talking about nilhism, once you look at the ramifications of the meaninglessness of the universe, and how it effects your life that is no longer nilhism. You are now entering the realms of hedonism, absurdism, or some other philosophical viewpoint.

    While 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' is a fantastic film; and there's nothing wrong with reading into films to find hidden meaning; it's interesting that the original creators of the film did not intentionally make it as an allegory for communism invading and destroying individualism. Walter Mirisch who supervised the production of the film said; "from personal knowledge, neither Walter Wanger nor Don Siegel, who directed it, nor Dan Mainwaring, who wrote the script nor original author Jack Finney, nor myself saw it as anything other than a thriller, pure and simple".
    Great video though, I love Rick and Morty and really enjoy your videos discussing it!

    Was the "slighltly different format" thing of you mentioning the kinda separating the video into titled chapters? Because I liked that a lot, it makes it easier to share even too (like the time I spread around a lot just the part of the deadpool philosophy about "culture that is too much self referential creates nothing new" in random conversations around online). Keep it up, Jared! This show is very good even when it's about things I've never seen before like this very Rick and Morty!

  • @hacktormike3679
    @hacktormike3679 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    WRONG! In Invasion of the Body Snatchers the aliens would replace the humans, disposing of their original bodies. Rick's girlfriend Unity actually coexists with its host. Is more likely a reference to the Star Trek Borgs or some other thing that came before

    • @alexwoodward3144
      @alexwoodward3144 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hacktor Mike well actually your wrong if you think she represents the borg. her ex boyfriend is undeniably supposed to be the borg.

    • @hacktormike3679
      @hacktormike3679 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, is true. What I mean is, both of them, Unity and her ex-boyfriend are Borg-like entities. The question would be if there is something before Star Trek that sums this idea

    • @krombopulos_michael
      @krombopulos_michael 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hacktor Mike does she? I kind of got the impression that she just takes over their bodies and they lose sentience.

    • @hacktormike3679
      @hacktormike3679 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Krombopulos Michael Yessss sorry English is not my language and I'm having a hard time getting my my thoughs through. I mean, yes, they lose sentience, like with the borg. The difference I was stating is that the body snatchers snatch bodies, and the Borg and Unity take control over them. Is nothing at all like Body Snatchers! Is more like that one Star Trek movie that I saw once, like fifteen years ago. So correct e if I'm wrong (I know you will)

    • @Lightscribe225
      @Lightscribe225 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hacktor Mike Body Snatchers works. Borg exists to assimilate and improve, like Unity's ex. The Body Snatchers seek to create a Utopia of Conformity. Like Unity.

    This was probably already pointed out in another comment, but another parallel is made to Animal Farm in the episode All Ricks Are Created Equal (But Some Are More Equal Than Others). Once the pigs finally take over the farm in their near-human state, they change the set of seven rules given to them by Old Major (the representation of Lenin) to say "All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others", the obvious inspiration for the title of the Rick and Morty episode.

    In S2E4 "Total Rickall", the episode where the premise is figuring out who is real and who is not due to an "Alien Parasite." In this episode, they use a voice actor to play Reverse Giraffe ("you know me, I have a short neck and legs"). The voice actors name is Keith David, and Keith also plays a leading character in John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982). If you haven't seen "The Thing" it's a movie where the crew of an Antarctic research facility have to figure out who is real and who is an Alien Parasite pretending to be real... Just another example of the incredible referencing by in Rick and Morty.

    Perhaps the name Snowball for revolutionary animals is so common due to the
    snowball effect, where an initially small or insignificant force builds upon itself to become very large. In relation to revolutionary sentiments, it refers to the gaining of momentum and influence over the rest of society.

    Love the video but did it bother anyone else that he gave credit to Ray Bradbury for the reference "Something Ricked this Way Comes"? Ray Bradbury actually takes his title from Shakespeare's Macbeth. In the play Macbeth takes the witches prophecies and kills the King of Scotland therefor disrupting what was known as the chain of being. The chain of being is basically the natural order of things and disruptions in this chain manifest themselves in natural oddities noted by the characters after the king is murdered. Therefore this idea of messing with the natural order of things by listening to evil characters is actually from Shakespeare and not Bradbury.

    "Close Rick-counters of the Rick-Kind" The Scene where Rick is being accused of killing other Rick's Referenced to Andy Rooney was either about the show 60 minutes segmenting "A few minutes with Andy Rooney" or how much of a shit he gives about a bunch of dead ricks over pancakes, creating an anology to Andy Rooney's "Kurt Cobain's Suicide overshadowing Nixon's Death", (which upset Andy Rooney that he had to rant about it.) But, Andy, had to express zero fucks for someone he cares little about over someone more significant importance in the perspective of their own social ladder or in Rick's case. the pancakes tasting like shit in a few minutes was more important than dead Ricks.
