    I feel like I'm the only one who sees Miller as a sympathetic villain. "He who fights monsters" and all that. He goes on the roaring rampage of revenge that many a traumatized war veteran has fantasized about (hell, many an average joe has fantasized about), but in the end it solved nothing, got himself killed, and at least one innocent was gunned down. If that's not a scathing criticism against revenge fantasies and Rambo-figures in general, I don't know what is.
    Great movie though.

    • @kaku2189
      @kaku2189 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      The tragic villain or an antivillain as an archetype. The darker shade of gray before going all in.
      What's interesting the most evil is perpetuated under a faulty logic and/or high emotion, but is acting as if it's totally just. Chaotic.
      The protagonist becomes disillusioned but rather fully transit into the far more elevated state consciousness. He corresponds with raw anger in the same way because like in his past life duped and used for a agenda that he did have some faculty to dissent or not engage in the 1st place.
      Likewise in the film and you pointed out he went out fighting but was cost worth it? No, even that one civilian casualty that is too many considering the plausibility he just orphaned a child. He died, no resolution and all this modality of filth lives another day with a flesh wound.

    • @yidy1
      @yidy1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      "but in the end it solved nothing"
      Sure cleaned some dirt off the streets for the short term. That's not "nothing".
      Perhaps if we had more vigilantes to strike the fear of God into the criminals...

    • @WisdomThumbs
      @WisdomThumbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      If we had more armed citizens, that would do a lot of good. But not vigilantes. Active Self Protection is a channel that mirrors my views on the subject.
      Miller didn't manage to kill the gang's leader, nor did he kill all the henchmen. The little boy who killed him will likely grow up hardened and more dangerous than the average criminal. So in the end, all Miller did was prove to some criminals that they can be more violent and decisive than the best vigilante, and they'll be more cautious (and they were already cracking down murderously on any innocents who got in their way).
      Since movies aren't a great showcase of reality, I recommend Active Self Protection again. Also, Paul Harrell. The latter has been in two self-defense shootings as a civilian, and his insight is wise. (I wish I was as wise as my gamertag username)

    • @yidy1
      @yidy1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@WisdomThumbs
      More armed citizens are sorely needed, but that wouldn’t prevent armed gangs from operating. In fact, if the gang decided to eliminate the armed citizen, he wouldn’t stand a chance. So the main difference between what we call “vigilante” and an armed citizen? Whether he surprises the gang and fights them on their turf, or has his home invaded by multiple gangsters when the element of surprise is working for the evil side...
      Now if this movie was real life, Miller would be better off to invite his friend to join his adventure, and that’s what he’d probably do. A few military veterans would plan the mission carefully and ensure the elimination of all gangsters. A group of vigilantes is more effective than one vigilante. Conclusion: We need more vigilantes, IE, groups of “armed citizens” sweeping and cleaning urban streets. Being that this is America, I guess we can call them, um, a “militia?”

      I showed it to him. Basically, he said that this scene ranks pretty high in terms of realism when it comes to movie firefights. However, if it was him during the encounter at 3:25, he would have hunkered down with his superior weapon and shot it out with those two guys from a distance instead of moving up on them.
      He also made a point that the actor obviously has a pretty high level of weapons training and it shows in his confidence level. This is displayed notably by the fact that a lot of the shooting he does is "reflex/point" shooting where his eye never really aims down the sight at his target despite the fact that he's otherwise using proper stance and technique. While this is sometimes the way to go IRL, generally speaking you're going to have a sight picture at some point during firing, even if it's hardly noticeable.

The lack of tactical movement in open spaces and the fact he can hear a baby cry and slight foot steps after dozens of 5.56 rounds without ear pro take the score down. Power is not everything. On a lot of occasions light weight and number of rounds carried are more important. The M4 / 5.56 is a good weapon/round provided the operator knows what they're doing, it's not a weapon that can be mastered by amateurs within minutes, it takes a lot of training. For this shooting scenario it is an ideal weapon, compactness perfect for the CQC and tight corners, his opponents are all at ranges less than 100 meters where this weapon/round are ideal.

      @@dandydasyt4766 True. But in that case, the way this scene should go is that he shoots - maybe just wounds - a couple of guys, and the rest leg it, then he does what he wants. (Would probably be very realistic too) However, if the premise of the film is that they are fanatical enough to stand and fight, then they stand and fight. And, if it's just one man against many, they will not do so as a one confused frontal attack, at least not very long. Some of them will almost instinctively start to outflank him - after all, against a single individual they have almost complete freedom of movement anyway - and then it will be very soon all over. It's a very cool scene overall and I really enjoyed watching it, but would it go down like this in real life? I highly doubt it.

That then boils down to reaction time. Keeping your rifle up all the time is a no go. Plus, the way he had his rifle allowed him easier access to his secondary weapon system.

    Actually this scene is pretty realistic. "Doubletap headshot" is a prime example of Hollywood fluff. You aim at the center mass, double tap, and one in the head in you have the opportunity.
    This scene showcases how a warfighter has the advantage over a bunch of street thugs in a firefight. He doesn't spray and pray. He hits center mass, and he closes distance while covering himself. They had good choreography and advice for this scene.
