I remember as a kid watching train coming out of a coconut farm after 2 minutes....just waited to get the glimse....also i live the smell of coal smoke and steam near a train....deeply registered in mind.... nostalgia
Hello my dear friend Arriving the first time in your wonderful Channel. Thank you for Sharing beautiful work. I left like registared with The Bell activated for strenghaten our friendship. We are together Strong hug from Brazil
You obviously are looking at the wrong video, there are several others videos showing (a) Nickel Plate diesel, 13 passenger cars, 3 loaded coal gondolas, and a 4th gondola with loader. If you can hear the diesel pulling, then you've got better ears than I. But it sure sounds quiet to me. On other Horseshoe curve videos engine 765 is busting it's nuts hauling it's huge load, and not loosing traction, isn't to bad for a "non-articulated"!
Michael Murphy The diesel was definitely helping, though not much, third or fourth notch at the most. Between 1.1k and 1.7k horsepower in those settings. Not to mention the traction motor noise. Those ES44's are very quiet as they have some sort of resonator in the exhaust stack. If you have a subwoofer or a way to increase your bass you can hear it better.
Yes, you are right. Horseshoe curve is a fairly steep grade, and 765 does wheel spin several times in other videos. After researching more, the tractive effort is modest at best compared to big steamers.
Horseshoe curve is on a line that has a nominal grade of 1.8%. At the location of the curve itself, the grade is lowered to 1.3% to compensate for the increased resistance that the curve adds to the train. 765, with 64,135 pounds of starting tractive effort would be rated at just 1150 trailing tons over a 1.8% grade, and a consist of that weight would have the locomotive digging its heals in at a meager 5-10 mph slog up the mountain. In this video, behind the tender, you have a 200 ton aux water tender, plus 11 cars with an average weight of probably 65-70 tons or so. So even without the diesel, trailing tonnage here is just short of 1000 tons. With the diesel, you have 1186 trailing tons. So yes, the diesel is necessary to get the consist up to the speed that is seen in this recording. 765's starting TE is indeed modest, but I wouldn't say that it is not a big steamer. The 2-8-4 wheel arrangement was designed for horsepower at speed, so on a more level subdivision, you could put a decent amount of tonnage behind the tender and still make 60-70 mph with it, which is what was done for the New River Trains back in the 90s (32 cars, 2650 tons or so, no diesel assistance, max allowable speed, 55).
Brilliant engineering ,Britain has huge unused coal reserves , could be used now many high efficiency non pollution techniques available, electricity dear now & very much due to brexit , loved them as a kid ,for a pack of ciggies from my dad ,went on the footplate of the Flying Scottsmanbat Kings Cross station ,Beeching's plan destructive to rail in U.K. even in places where 2 car diesels could have been used .Maldon in Essex are petitioning for the link to Kelvedon & Witham ,let's wait & see.Short haul flights banned in Spain where I live ,the H.S.T s although electric & fast & cheap.Discounts for elderly & students.
@@dwhallon21 Yeah there is a park in the center of the curve. You can pay to go up to the park when its open. If you don't want to pay you can stay down in the parking lot and still see the trains from down there.
9 years ago allready.I still remember the sound echoing off the mountains
Great video!
I was there at that same spot and watched her take the Curve like a champ.
Hermosos videos edad de oro grandes locomotoras grandes acorazados .gracias

Thanks for a great video!
I have horseshoe curve in my train simulator and I used mostly PRR locomotives on the route, I never new that the 765 can be seen there
It was on the HSC for an excursion run
very cool I rode around the Curve years ago with parents on the old PRR.
Super cool! Look at her work that grade!
Masterpiece
Gorgeous!
Ah memories of golden Pennsylvania railroad times
Cool thanks mate
Good girl 765 ~ good girl.
Eu amo 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
You know who is the best?
Read the first word

I actually never knew it was a hill I thought it was just a curve

now its big boys turn!
nice HD color. how do you guys get to that spot, walk the tracks?
There is a path that accesses it from the other side of the road tunnel... DO NOT WALK THE TRACKS HERE!!!
No wonder it was makin' so much noise - it was shaking like a maracca! (video jitter? or Comcast judder?)
Could I use this footage in a compilation video? I'll give you credit for it!
Wow
this looks like a model! 😂😂
I loved the steam locomotives 🌳___🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃_______🌲🌲🌲🏔⛰
No you walk in from the opposite side of the road tunnel.
I think the tail diesel blew its horn for the onlookers as well. That's sorta neat.

I think this is a cool video. Love hearing that steam engine working up this grade. Where is this location
Horseshoe Curve, Altoona Pa
@@ghoststalker44 can folks stop by that area to watch the trains. I am from central Indiana, but take family trips sometimes

Does she still run the curve or has she been retired. Would love to see it in person or better yet ride her
The only thing missing is the caboose.
