    I was born in Altoona during WWII. Seeing the beautiful, lush western pennsylvania country and hear those lonesome whistles brings a gear to these old eyes.

    30 years ago, 759 took the first step on horseshoe curve, then 765 coming to keep up the legacy of 759.

    The very first whistle you hear is the 8" diameter Lunkenheimer 3 chime from the East Altoona Roundhouse. It was mounted on this one day only as a tribute to all of the railroaders that ever worked in or through Altoona. It was used between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, only.

      The deep 3 was a Lunkenheimer?

    A NKP steamer on PRR territory deep in Pennsylvania is just cursed in my opinion. My family worked for the PRR, PC, and Conrail so we are very proud of our Pennsylvania Railroad family heritage.

      Well, #1361 is being restored in Altoona and will travel on NS to tour the state and will visit tourist railroads and offer excursions. I don't think #765 will visit PA again any time soon. They go to CVSR in eastern Ohio and to a regional freight railroad between western Ohio, through Indiana and into Michigan for public excursions.

    funny I should see this today, cuz it is 8/20/17 I just got dont scrubbing up after being in the cab of this engine when we were doing runbys at the open house where we keep her in new haven, it is our open house weekend, they were nice this year and let the members blow the whistle when we were going forward and back to signal, and they let me help bank the fire, much training of the younger members was going on, we had one or two learning how to fire, Michael I think his name was learning the ropes of a steam engine as he is a ns engineer but his first foray into running an actual steam engine, oh and I asked if they would let me run the injector to put water in once when it needed it, and so they did, the only thing I did not get to do was do the throttle when they were sitting there putting off steam for the night photo shoot, dont know if that had something to do with fra rules or just did not even feel like letting me even close it, John was saying something akin to some other time, when the time is right maybe, so it was kind of vague, and he basically said he did not want to talk he was running, I had a fun day the weather was warm but not too bad , and I got to learn a few new things, but moreover I got to help bank the fire, practice makes for better technique, I will have my videos up on channel in a short time.
    but just though I would mention that its coincidence today is the very day of the anniversary of that weekend of that day which had not been done in steam excursion since the 1970's, and maybe one day we will get to do it again,
    signed Jeremy

    Great video. Question, in years to come, could you always keep 2 whistles on her like you had in this video? I think it would be cool on the CVSR trips to have a 2nd whistle. But please DO keep the Mars light. It adds a lot of Character to the engine. Also it makes it look like it did when she ran mainline service.

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, because it would need PTC (and cab signals for the ex-PRR in PA) and NS is not excursion friendly right now. It did visit Strasburg Rail Road a few times, and this year after leaving Strasburg and returning to Roanoke, it went to the Virginia Scenic Railroad for excursions between Goshen and Staunton, VA this past fall. The former C&O/CSX now operated by Buckingham Branch Railroad. No PTC required there.

    So i have a question: So you know how in those commercials, and scenes you make with the 765 running Freight service?
    Would you suppose doing freight excursions? Because I'd love to see the 765 combined with vintage 1942 freight cars.

    • @animal16365
      @animal16365 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They wouldn't be able to run those old cars. There pretty much gone and also those types of cars are not allowed out onto the main line. They'd have to be modernized with roller bearings instead of babied berings

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, they are called plain bearings or journal bearings also nicknamed friction bearings. Class 1's consider them a risk now because they can hotbox and trip detectors. And NS won't host excursions again, but they will ferry 765 and 611 to tourist railroads and other railroads to operate excursions for the public. I was on a few NS hosted excursions like the 765 from Lewistown to Gallitzin and return on May 25, 2013, and from west of Bethlehem to Pittston and return on August 22, 2015, and 611 at Manassas, VA on a 102 mile round trip on a freight only NS line on June 4, 2016, and at Strasburg Rail Road in Lancaster County, PA in Sept 2019.

      No. NS is not excursion friendly right now 765 has other places to run in the midwest that will host excursions like in Ohio. NS will still let 765 (and 611) use their tracks to get to other railroads to operate excursions for the public. Funny that the US vice president in 2012 and 2013 when the 765 ran over the curve, May 2013 were the public excursions, is the president now. And the 765 visited his hometown in Sept 2015 when it went to Steamtown and operated excursions to East Stroudsburg and Delaware Water Gap. Most Steamtown excursions on the Pocono main have been diesel powered since the ex-CN Mikado #3254 was retired sometime after 2010.

      No, these were one off events. August 2012 were the ferry moves to Harrisburg and back, there were short employee excursions from Enola Yard to Harrisburg and back and May 2013 were the public excursions from Lewistown to Gallitzin and return. 765 and TVRM 4501 stopped running excursions on NS after 2015, and 611 ran excursions on NS 2015-2017. The program only lasted several years from Sept. 2011 to May 2017. You can still ride behind 765 and 611 on other railroads, and the TVRM steam locomotives on TVRM excursions.
