The midsommar one is so great, its really cool to see her character get triggered by the world "family" during it and having her trip shift to anxiety and darkness
i mean every video should be treated as if there's an epilepsy warning. it isn't his responsibility to cater to the 0.01% of viewers that might be affected. that's like giving a PTSD warning when loud sounds are played. if it's a problem to you, you might need to find a new hobby
Ironic that he's talking about what makes good trip scenes and what makes more basic/tacky ones, then uses "ahhh bright flashing lights changing colour rapidly that's what tripping is right guys????" for the transitions
Not actually shown, but the part where he describes drug paranoia as looking down to see your dead Grandma climbing your leg with a bowie knife between her teeth, always gets me in hysterics. Also, I believe there are a grand total of two scenes where Hunter isn't drunk and/or high, and they are both brief scenes where he wakes up from having passed out.
A subtle trip scene that I love is in "Beautiful Boy". Nic is feeling anxious during a diner scene at his girlfriend's house, he goes to the bathroom and finds some pills in the cabinet. When he returns at the table, we start to hear "Svefn-g-englar" by Sigur Ros and in a few seconds, his face goes from shame to pleasure, confidence, and even the feeling of belonging. You can actually see that in Chalamet's face. It's pretty subtle but as a former opioid addict, this is the most accurate depiction of a hit I've ever seen. Not the big trips, but that feeling of getting high while no one notices. We don't get to see Nic's perspective of it, but damn, Chalamet is incredible at showing axactly what he's feeling.
Thank you for mentioning this you are so correct, his subtle little mannerism and facial expressions throughout the film really make us sympathize for Nic which is what makes the film so heartbreaking
Oddly enough, being a participant in making decisions and they way it was shot, when the main character started to notice what was happening, it gave me the kind of giddy butterflies in my stomach when something starts to kick in.
Bright flashing lights and colors at around 3:17, 5:06, 6:40, 8:16 You know at this point, if you’re photosensitive, probably just listen to this one or skip it
@Karsten Runquist can you please put a warning for these transitions? I'm not even photo sensitive, but they gave me a headache. Great video & thank you
@@stewyyishim SHUT THE FUCK UP, just please shut the fuck up. trip sequences are mind-boggling to look at, bright flashing lights just hurt. being that you can't tell the difference tells me that you're probably too young to understand or never taken a psychedelic in your life. so, I ask again please just shut the fuck up, you're not smart, you're not clever, you just think about yourself you inconsiderate cunt.
Atlanta 3x08 where Paper Boi have a bad trip and also goes into a time paradox. For me is the perfect one because they chose not to rely on the graphic and weird visual effects of the trip, but just the VIBES and the anxiety of a BAD trip, gives you a sense of paranoia that's really unique.
For me music also plays a big part in trip scenes Apocalypse Now feels also like a long trip, scenes like the helicopter crash with the playboy girls, the boat arriving at its final destination or at the one bridge where the fighting is happening. Whole movie feels sureal
well there is one scene where Lance is actually tripping, and to me it’s easily one of the films trippiest scenes. and you’re right, the music plays a huge part in the whole movie and especially that scene i think.
BoJack Horseman had pretty good trip sequences, I think. I feel like it gets taken for granted because it's a cartoon, but it still felt real, as did the whole show. Then again, it's a show for addicts and people who are friends and families of addicts. Also, one could make an argument for Eternal Sunshine. The addiction to another person that forces you to deal with that.
The trip sequence in You s2 with Joe and Forty was great (long as hell!) but I think the point was to exhaust the viewer and cut between scenes of Joe's childhood to reveal information he would never admit even to himself. Also it was an unexpected bonding moment between them both which makes what happened afterwards even sadder😩
As cool, narratively-creative, and visually-pleasing trip sequences are, it's also a double-edged sword. Trip sequences show a depiction of what's it like to go on a mind-bending journey through addictive drugs, but it also means it has to display it in a striking appealing and pleasing way. I remember someone on Reddit wanting to try out drugs for the first time because of Jesse's trip sequence, which is ironic given it's also from possibly one of the biggest anti-drug shows of all time (not to mention what happens later in the next couple of episodes after the trip sequence).
To be fair most trip scenes are depicting psychedelic drugs like LSD, mushrooms etc. rather than heroin like the Jesse scene; most of which are non-addictive.
yeah, that's true D.V., I think there is a problematic prerogative in doing scenes depicting being high on drugs because while they are glorifying it to an audience, it is also showing how powerful that shit would have a control on your life, especially with what Jesse's doing in that scene. it must feel amazing but that's exactly why it's so scary.
mentions tripping but then goes on to say the drugs that cause tripping = 'psychedelics', are addictive drugs. Well Bill wilson, creator of the AA, would have something to say for the importance of LSD to help not just alcoholics but more, get clean from using psychedelics back when LSD was legal. More than 40 years ago, Bill Wilson learned what many in the scientific community are only beginning to understand and what many psychedelic users already know: Mind-altering drugs are not always antithetical to sobriety. Instead, psychedelics may be a means to achieve and maintain recovery from addiction.
The trip scenes in The Big Lebowski were so good. The sequences are so illogical and otherworldly, just like a real dream/trip. Also epilepsy warning might be a good idea
I really like the trip sequence in The Worst Person in the World. Really feels like she's confronting all of her feelings and fears in an altered state of mind. I was hoping you'd go into detail about it. Another one which I find really believable acting wise is when the security guard gets unholy amounts of acid poured into his mouth in Good Time. I really believe that's how it would probably be like to witness someone in that situation.
never tripped but I did once have a horrible terrible, paranoia filled high that made me feel so horribly anxious and the midsommar scene really captures the internal anxiety, paranoia, aloneness, and trapped feeling I felt in that moment
I've always loved this theme and keep noticing that in movies, especially because they're usually so exaggerated and unreal. Midsommar is my favorite and for me the most accurate depiction of a trip.
As someone who's tripped a lot during her teens, I can say all of these are unique and fitting in different ways, but Midsommar is the most accurate psychedelics depiction IMO. At least as far as visuals and paranoia go. It doesnt capture the enlightment or euphoria you can feel when you're tripping in a good set & setting, but that wasn't the intention
Check out Rumble Fish by Coppola that was the first time I saw that floating effect made exactly 40 years ago. The effect is meant to represent an out of body near death experience and not drug related in this film. It works pretty good as a practical drug trip visual representation in film. Everything in the arts has been devoured and recycled a long time ago.
I get the idea for the transitions in the video but it really hurts my eyes, and I hate to imagine someone that’s actually photo sensitive watching this video without any warning
Great rundown of some of the best, including Midsommar! Some of my favorite, and I think underrated drug moments are in Inherent Vice, I think because a lot of them aren't overtly trippy, things just seem to blend together in a weird way or go from very naturalistic to slightly bizarre without you really noticing.
DUDE! You should put epilepsy warnings before sequences like the one starting at 1:09! I don't have epilepsy, but it was still irritating to me, and it could harm those who do have epilepsy severely.
Drug experiences are almost entirely subjective. It was nice hearing a take on these substances from someone who I doubt has experimented much, since I've always wondered how straight edge people view these scenes.
Id love a whole video on fear and loathing in las vegas, along with being a movie long trip sequence the themes and what it has to say about society is so relvant even today
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas has the most accurate acid trip effects I’ve seen to this day, when their at the casino and he looks down at the carpet swirling and morphing around!! And then fucking Midsommer… the tree bark melting effect and all of the warping in the surrounding background along with her audio sound hallucinations omggg❤️❤️.ni have had bad trips similar to that just from being to overwhelmed by all the differences and being stuck in it but when I watch that it gives me a nostalgic feeling. it legit gives me acid/shroom “flashbacks”
A person who’s had experiences on psychedelics compared to one who hasn’t will connect very differently to a trip sequence. A person who hasn’t done the drug depicted on screen can really only sympathize with the protagonist to some extent. Whereas after doing LSD then watching Fear and Loathing the “he’s literally me” button was spammed in my head nonstop through the course of the film.
i watched mandy on acid a few months ago and one of my friends fell asleep while the other was in some sort of trance and was unresponsive to anything i would say. this experience gave me the most terrible mental breakdown and i couldn’t move or sleep for the entire rest of the night. the feelings that night gave me are absolutely indescribable but to do my best it felt like i was watching a demon slowly float towards me while i was trapped in time unable to move forward. i watched this movie again sober a couple weeks later and it was laughable how normal it was in comparison.
My favorite is Dredd (the newest version) where some of the fight scenes, and some of people falling long distances are influenced by the drug “slow mo” which slows down time exponentially
The best trip sequence is the one you take yourself! If you're putting out this kind of video I hope that you have experienced a trip for yourself and if not I sincerely hope you do. Under the right circumstances it can be one of the most beautiful and meaningful experiences.
You can and it does fuck you up but it's a waste, I mean like a 600 hits in one whif kind of waste. Nowadays people just dip cigarettes in Liquid LSD so that still counts as smoking I guess.
The trip sequence in 'Dead man's Shoes' is a great example of the filmmaker putting us in the shoes of the tripping character AND the sober character at the same time. The sequence really taps into the ridiculousness of what tripping actually looks like from an outside perspective since the sequence just takes place in a bog standard living room with the characters just trying to have a normal evening. On account of this, the sequence also demonstrates the vulnerability of being unknowingly spiked and how easy it is to be manipulated. Definitely go check out the whole film, it really shows the bleak side of the average British town.
A Scanner Darkly is always under appreciated in these conversations. The drug depicted is the fictional substance D but due to that your not really sure of the drugs effects, even if your an experienced drug taker. So the typical "yep what it's like" or "it's nothing like that" conversation is completely thrown out the window. the result is the closest I've seen to stepping into the unknown with a drug you've not done before. on top of that your never really sure when the characters are on the drug. If I remember rightly you never see the charcters take the drug so you have no idea when there on it or not. The film is totally rotoscoped animation as well so it feels like there is no coming off the drug really. the characters whole lives could be spend on substance D, so it's drug paranoid turn up to 11. Overall just feel like Scanner Darkly tried to achieve something these other trip sequences didn't. very impressive film making
Wish SLC Punk had been mentioned!! The acid trip was so freaking disorienting and felt like it was 3 hours long while somehow inducing the same exact anxious feeling you get while tripping... it does a fantastic job of being able to bounce back and forth through a wide array of emotions seamlessly.
Wolf of wall street - what cracks me up most about it is when he says „miraculously, i managed to bring the car home without a scratch“ or something like that, and then you see the car and it is TRASHED 😂😂😂
what’s your favorite trip scene?
That dream sequence in The Big Lebowski, I mean like holy shit😂.
fear and loathing or midsommar
The Green Fairy scene in Moulin Rouge!
Lotus flowers Percy Jackson
ik we be shitting on the MCU, but the Doctor Strange sequence got it

yes! that’s what i thought of when i saw the title. it’s the closest movie scene to what i see in my trips. things breathe and seem surreal.
“That’s too much man” and “downer ending” from Bojack Horseman are my favorite trip scenes of all time. Both add so much depth to his character.
Going to spanocopa's house 5 times and blanking out every time
