Callum Ja I the point still stands because Dunkirk has multiple perspectives and is meant to happen over a certain period of time because time is the enemy, as in 1917, just over a slightly longer period- so the one perspective real time thing wouldn’t have worked in Dunkirk but really did for 1917

Why didn't you mention Victoria? This is the only real one-shot-film I know about (no editing whatsoever). All the movies in your list use hidden cuts or visual effects to create the illusion of one shot. Victoria is one giant 2-hour take, which makes it truly exceptional.
watched 1917 last weekend and can say my absolute favourite part about the film was the way it was shot, it just gave it something extra that other films just don’t have. Think it also added so much suspense
I'm sure someone has mentioned it, or someone certainly will, but Russian Ark is genuinely done in a single take and it uses it perfectly. As the character floats through the beautiful exhibits and corridors, the camera does as well creating this mesmerising effect where you feel like you're just watching through someone's eyes. It's a beautiful film, and if you can I'd suggest you watch it
One can argue that 1917 technicalllyyy visualizes two shots in the film *SPOILERS* (the second being when Schofield gets shot by the head and passes out for several hours) it was a clever way to fast forward the day tho
If it were me, I would have Schofield get shot, fall downstairs offscreen, then have the camera pause, pan to the window to reveal it being night out, and then come in on Schofield’s face. I get why they did it though, since he’d be unconscious (ruining it being part of a human’s experience), and it would take a bit away from the gorgeous image where the camera goes out the sniper’s window and reveals the ruined town.

One shots to me feel almost claustrophobic. You can’t leave, you’re forced to follow and the scene doesn’t change to a new one when you would expect. For 1917, it was cool to use one shot bc it’s pretty much real time and cuts can change your sense of time which wasn’t an issue in 1917 bc you’re following along the whole time. Birdman always seemed to make sense as a one shot since it was set in a theatre and when you’re on stage, there’s no cuts, just whatever happens. I love long takes and one take films are certainly exciting to see done but at the very least long takes look GORGEOUS especially with action - think Revenant - and it shows real talent for the actors, director, cinematographer and editor for the film because they can’t hide behind an edit. Love one take or at least long take films and whether there’s a reason for it or not, it looks gorgeous and I’d much rather long takes than constant cutting

I think it was more than once I knew it was a one-shot movie I was looking for where they made the secretive cuts. And usually I'd see it. I think that's just a natural disadvantage of one-shots; they drag you in and your brain notices, so you start noticing, too, where they must have used some trickery to make actual cuts.

my favorite one-shot film isn’t exactly a movie but an episode from a show. “two storms” from the haunting of hill house. it’s the same approach but instead of merging cuts together, they filmed real 17 minute shots and put the scenes together into one episode that transcended two periods of time within one weathering storm. watch it and you’ll understand!
Hardcover Henry, Run Lola Run, Children Of Men, and Uncut Gems all do a great job of stressing you the fuck out and really *feeling* like a One-Shot due to it's tag-along-the-lead style and not cutting to scenes that center supporting story. The horror flick Silent House claims to be unedited.. haven't seen it yet

A couple tv shows also used one-shot stuff, one being the third season of mr robot, and this other show about cops raiding some crack houses. I forget the name.
Mr Robot season 3 episode 5 uses this same technique as well... I honestly think its use is much more justified than in these films, and works a lot better as well since it's only 40 minutes and not 2 hours long like 1917 or birdman

You should check out Kaili Blues and Long Days Journey Into Night films by Bi Gan. The long shot is used in a dreamy way, which actually adds to the narrarion of the films.
Maybe one other example of this technique: "Victoria" (2015) is actually one-shot. They did multiple takes (I think like 3) but all you see in the final film is one-take. They also never had a real sophisticated script but only some plotpoints and improvised along the way as far as i know
If you loved Hitchcock's 'Rope' I'd highly recommend checking out Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's 'Psychoville' which crafted a superb homage to Rope in the fourth episode. Shot, I believe, in two continuous takes that were seamlessly blended into one the single set was crafted in such a way as to allow the crew to shift scenery back and forth off camera allowing for the extended takes. Though extended takes are a common thing in cinema it's rare to see a TV show and, in particular, an entire episode attempt such an experiment but fans of Reece and Steve will know that they frequently not so much as push the envelope than blast it into orbit. You can no doubt find behind the scenes footage online and it makes for fascinating viewing ...

The movie Rope actually does have a visible cut in it. It's near the end, where it goes from a shot of the two main guys and then cuts to James Stewart's face. It felt very jarring after not seeing any cuts like that at all previously in the film.
Please go watch Victoria from i think 2015, Karsten!!!It is really a great movie and in opposition to the three well known examples it really is only one shot. There are scenes like in a car where it is unbelievable how they did it

You should see Utøya: July 22. It's a Norwegian one-shot movie about the terror attack in 2011. In my opinion it is the perfect use of the one-shot technique, it really conveys the claustrophobia of being trapped on an island while trying to escape and at the same time allowing you to feel how long 72 minutes really is. It's not an easy watch though. It's emotionally devastating.
i think 1 shot movies take advantage of the audience not wanting to be in a position of uncomfortability. Like whenever you realize you are having a nightmare but can’t wake yourself up, all you want to do is escape that reality. but you can’t.

The film "Lost in London" with Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson is also a one take film. The only difference is is that it's actually real time, a live stream movie. It's a cool experimental film that I've never seen before and i recommend watching it!
I went into 1917 basically blind and I didn’t actually realise it was one take. What I did say as soon as it ended is that it was unbelievably tense the whole way through, and I felt like I couldn’t escape the experience of the characters. For me that proves how brilliantly the technique was used in this film.
if you wanna watch a real one shot movie without any secrelty hidden cuts, you gotta watch "Victoria". It's a German movie and about 2hours long, the acting is incredibly natural to this point where I believed they actually improvised the whole dialouge... absolutely brilliant!
Rope is my favourite Hitchcock film and Birdman is one of my favourite films in general - glad to hear you talk about them - they’re fantastic and really use this style in a way that doesn’t feel gimmicky. While I like 1917, it is by no means anywhere near as seamless or useful to the actual storytelling process in my opinion
One of the reasons Rope was shot in 10 minute increments was b/c the reel of film has a 10 minute limit in length. And the event in 1917 didn't take place within 2 hours (but rather around 24 hours?), so the movie isn't one long take, but rather a series of long takes.

Da Pumaface for me it didn’t fully take me out of it but every time i noticed, i’d think “there! that’s where they cut the scene!” for a few seconds

Russian Ark was made in one shot without secret cuts - thousands of extras, 4 orchestras and huge sets choreographed in an unmatched experiment.

Birdman is like my favorite Film of all time. I love this movie so damn mutch.
i haven't seen Rope, but that window in the room reminds me an awful lot of the next door neighbor's window in Rear Window..
if you wanna watch a real one shot movie without any secrelty hidden cuts, you gotta watch "Victoria".
It's a German movie and about 2hours long, the acting is incredibly natural to this point where I believed they actually improvised the whole dialouge...

Rope is my favourite Hitchcock film and Birdman is one of my favourite films in general - glad to hear you talk about them - they’re fantastic and really use this style in a way that doesn’t feel gimmicky. While I like 1917, it is by no means anywhere near as seamless or useful to the actual storytelling process in my opinion
One of the reasons Rope was shot in 10 minute increments was b/c the reel of film has a 10 minute limit in length. And the event in 1917 didn't take place within 2 hours (but rather around 24 hours?), so the movie isn't one long take, but rather a series of long takes.
If you're able to find it, you should watch _SABADO: UNA PELICULA EN TIEMPO REAL_ (2003). There are no editing tricks; it really is one shot.
1917 impressed me for how well they filmed the movie and I need to see Rope
