  • Hey Stitchers,
    I'm taking it to the streets yet again, this time to hunt for some Christmas lights but before I could jet set, I had to soak my fruit for my upcoming *fingers crossed Black fruit cake! I think the rum fumes kinda got to me 🤣

    I absolutely love Christmas fruit cake! I am from Grenada and grew up on this cake. I have a Jamaican friend who makes one for me every year 😋
    I can't wait to hear how yours turned out
    I cannot honestly say that there are any sewing steps or techniques that I absolutely follow! I do read my sewing instructions and that's about it. I did not use to pre-wash but I do now. There are however times when I still skip pre-washing but definitely wash before I wear!

      One of my best friends is Grenadian!! It’s nice to kinda have sewing freedom and not have to stringently follow any rules lol I get that.

    My sewing steps are stay stitching the neckline but first making sure all markings and adjustments on fabrics have been made, if I can use store brought binding for neckline and armholes I will and don’t forget hem adhesives 😊

    Thank you for sharing. I'm learning so many gems about your home. I must wash my fabrics as soon as I get them! Working with dirty fabric when you h allergies is no fun. Reading the instructions for the pattern and checking the size chart are steps I don't miss. I have noticed less lights this Christmas. I think that it is because it has become so commercialized many people are just overwhelmed.

    • @unsewcial

      I really do enjoy the lights though so I am a tad disappointed but I certainly agree about everything becoming so commercialized. I’ve got dust allergies which aren’t fun so I can only imagine!

    I’m enjoying the videos you’re sharing. I think us sewers must be a bit nosy. I love watching videos about sewing, sewing spaces, fabric hauls and pattern hauls. Also interesting to meet your family. I’ve never heard of black cake. I’d think it was chocolate cake with chocolate icing,😊

    I don't know how many rats peed on my fabric😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for putting that picture in my head. I always prewash as soon as my fabric arrives. But it is more due to shrinkage and having it ready to use. I also zig zag the raw edges of the wovens before washing. I honestly can't thing of any other steps or techniques that I do every time. Of course, that gets me into trouble sometimes. Good luck with your cake.

    • @unsewcial
      @unsewcial  หลายเดือนก่อน

      🤣🤣🤣you’re welcome. Sometimes I serge the edges before washing but most times I don’t. Lol not following steps and instructions gets me into trouble too but you live and you learn 🫣😆

    The steps I never miss is pre washing! I use to not do it because of being lazy. However, after major shrinkage and not being able to wear the garments, I stopped that a long time ago. Understitching is a must for me too. Can’t wait to see how the cake turns out. If it’s a win, you must share the recipe! I feel the same way about the lights here. While they are plentiful, I remember a whole lot more when I was growing up. Are you safe from the volcanos 🌋? Meaning do you have to worry about volcano activity reaching where you live? Why did they activate out of nowhere 30 years ago? Have you ever left the island? TFS ❤.

    • @unsewcial
      @unsewcial  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would be very annoyed if my garment shrunk on me but it definitely would be a lesson learnt lol. I was really disappointed with the lights or lack thereof but still it’s a relief knowing it’s not just here. The volcano has been an ordeal. She erupted first in 1995 and it went on with active eruptions for years. Many relocated to the USA and the uk during those times. I have left the island several times. Lives in the uk and wales on 3 different occasions. Lives in Barbados and in Jamaica and for a short time in antigua and the British Virgin Islands 🫣🫣🫣. Whilst the volcano is still considered active we haven’t had an eruption affect this side of the island for a few years. Gods willing it stays that way but still the other side of the island was devastated. It’s called the buried city now and unlivable🥺

    • @CreativiteeByT
      @CreativiteeByT หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ That is soooo hurtful to hear about the volcano activity. I wonder why it activated… Prayerfully , it will get like that again. So sorry…

    I haven’t made my cakes yet - I’ve got a few to do. I tend to mince them up a bit and leave a few whole - mincing it helps the alcohol to infuse. I add glacé cherries, mixed essence, if you have cherry brandy then that would be good too.

    Prewash always and even though I never dry my clothes in the dryer I always throw the fabric for its inaugural dryer run. Both, always
    Press seams
    Even though I rarely just use the serger I always Overlocker seams... All of them.
    Unstitched, stay stick always & top stitch when necessary
    I have recently rediscovered basting tricky fabrics and zippers, collars etc. It's just worth the time

    • @unsewcial
      @unsewcial  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahhhh pressing is a definite must. Really improves the quality of a garment. Thanks for mentioning this one! I’ve sometimes basted zippers particularly when attempting a pattern match and I agree it’s helpful.

    I have had fun following your vlogmas. I am wondering if the lack of Christmas lights is a trend? I live in a small town on the west coast in U.S.A but only about 1/4 of folks decorated this year. I always wash my fabric as soon as I get it home. I also mark and clip my notches when I cut my pattern out. I read my directions and stay stitch. ( I don’t always follow the directions, lol). Thank you for sharing so much of your life. I have loved it! ❤ at first I was thinking black cake was a comparable treat to my grandmother’s rum soaked fruit cake, but I could have anchored a large boat with that, her cake was dense and barely edible.
