Loving my 1st drone, only thing I need to RTM about is the little symbol at the bottom showing where your controller is pointing and where the drone is, it is often miles off, with the drone showing behind you at takeoff, not sure if it's a weak signal, I need to wait longer, or it needs calibrated. It's handy to make sure you are pointing straight at it when it's far away.
Flying without safety guards: "Oh okay, that's perfectly reasonable and legal." Flying with safety guards: "Bro, are you mad? You could kill someone with that..."
Yup. I'm more of a backpack full of batteries kind of guy so turnaround time is more important to me than a single battery being charged more quickly. Really depends on how/where you fly on which type of charging you prefer. Cheers!
Now i don't dare to touch it :) According to manual it initiates RTH by flying upwards first (good when drone is just below the tree) or when it's close to home point it initiates landing (great if drone is just above rock, puddle, lake, tree ...). So it has three different actions of which pause is actually the least deadly.
Thanks Ethan! Yeah, it's great not having to go way out of my way to grab a 30 second chunk of b-roll, I can just walk to the park across the street. 😀
I did, learn one thing I mean, I broke down and bought a mini, I comb through the apps for my drones and normally figure it all out , but the return to home button working as a pause button was something I missed. The mini is much more pleasing to fly than I expected, very responsive and has more range than I really need, always a plus, I don’t miss the optical avoidance at all, in fact since I have flown the mini a few times I can see how it’s a hindrance on my other drones. I’m going to switch it off on those drones as well. The only thing I can say slightly negative is return to home isn’t as accurate on the mini as the other DJI drones I own. It’s apparently not precision landing, but still it’s close enough and it does the main thing, it comes home! Lol, but they just added option in the go fly app for what the mini will do at signal loss. I believe the default is still return to home, but they added hover in place and land as options for what the mini does upon losing controller signal. Probably dangerous to the mini’s health giving some people those options to play around with, lol. Still liking your videos Steve, great job!
Haha! That's funny! Yeah, I agree it's really nice to fly. That was the first thing I noticed coming from the Spark. I agree in regards to obstacle avoidance too. I thought I wanted more yet I almost always had it switched off on my Spark. Enjoy your Mini and happy, safe flying!
I can say that I learned a lot more than just one thing about operating my mini today! Just the manual joystick takeoff function by itself was huge. I use an S8 with the remote and with the home button directly where the takeoff button is located I had quite a few moments of frustration with the app closing while trying to get airborne. Keep putting out great content and I will keep watching! :)

Really like that little guy, as I also loved my first drone which was a spark. Unfortunately in Germany (btw. the whole European Union) the WiFi connection isn’t FCC, it’s CE which has a dramatically lower signal strength so you always have to deal with bad connections also if the drone is only about 100m away from you. That’s the unfortunate reason I had to switch to the mavic which comes with light bridge instead of WiFi which is also with the non-FCC signal strength quite usable.
Yes, I think I‘d love both the spark and the mini and still use the spark (or now the mini) instead of the mavic Pro (1th Gen.) if we could use FCC WiFi here. Unfortunately our low strength WiFi force us to use lightbridge-controlled drones instead of WiFi ones, at least if it should work quite properly.

I can understand if I travel thru one state to another or one country to another.. wd probably do that BUT what if I am in sams city but goes frm one place/garden to another, calibration need everytime?
Thanks! The manual recommends calibrating if you're flying 50km away from the last location, you haven't flown in 30 days or you are prompted. I know some folks calibrate every time they fly. I don't do that. I just calibrate when prompted and it has worked out for me. Following the manual's advice is likely your best bet. Happy flying!
Hi Steve, I have a question about Mini option to lock on moving subject and keep it in the frame while hovering in one place. I know follow mode is not an option in this drone, but simple "lock and keep in frame" would be great. Not sure if this is possible straight out of the box, or there is some workaround like going in some mode, (like dronie, rocker, helix..) and then just keep drone hover in place in record mode instead start mode itself. Thanks.
The Quickshots will keep you in frame while they are doing their thing. I haven't tested to see how much movement of the subject they will tolerate. May have to look in to that. Cheers. 😀
@@amsmith123 The cache video files on my Spark had audio, which was recorded from the smartphone or tablet you were using the fly. It was actually decent and I did use it on a couple of occasions. I would just sync up the audio from the cached files in post. I have not found the same on the Mini.
Thank you for your efforts! New subscriber. Just bought a mini yesterday so everything is new to me. Can't you charge one battery in the quad and the other(s) in the hub? That would give you 2 batteries charging at the same time, "in parallel".
Thanks learnt a lot like the pause feature and setting the video exposure. I didn’t know you could get ND filters either. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks subscribed
While flying keep other battery charging I notice by the time I flew 2 flights had one charged back up so haveing a power source near will make charging time faster and you never really deplete all your battery’s works for me
I really depends on how you use it. I tend to take all three batteries and head out on hikes or bike rides where remote charging is not possible. I get home with three depleted batteries. If I want to go out flying again, I have to wait and wait...
Thanks Jackie, I appreciate that! The Spark ND filters actually do fit on the Mini but it's not a snug fit. They would likely fall off with any kind of movement. I really just put the Spark's ND filter in the video to show that weight wise it is possible to add one without breaching the sub-250g limit. Cheers!
The most useful point for me was the weight of the drone. Before that, I could not understand why I cannot fly further than 30/50m. After I took off the protective cage I could start to use it as it should be used. Noone mentioned it before. Thanks a lot!
Hey Steve, looking to get a mavic mini for back country trout fishing videos. Concerned it might hit a tree or drop it in the water. What's it like for obstacles? I hear it doesn't warn you. Would you use the guards? Thanks
Hi! Yeah, the Mini does not have any collision avoidance whatsoever so you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. The guards work well but if you use them outdoors the Mini is no longer sub-250g so it needs to be registered in countries that have drone restrictions. I think the guards are meant more for indoor flying and could ultimately get you snagged up in a tree. The more expensive drones have collision avoidance systems but they typically don't cover overhead or side obstacles, so they are not 100% failsafe either. Personally, I have never used the guards outdoors on either my Spark or Mini. Cheers!
Might be a silly question, but the remote control is for controlling the direction of the drone, right? In flight, can you adjust the angle of the camera gimble... To be pointed at a downward angle of 45 degrees, for example? If so, is this achieved with the app
You can point the gimbal from -90º (straight down) to +20º (slightly upwards) using the thumbwheel on the remote or by touching your smartphone/tablet screen and dragging a finger up and down. Up/down is the only user controllable movement for the gimbal.
Correct me if I am wrong but I want the charger to charge one at a time to full. That way I can fly sooner with the one that gets full and while I am flying with it the 2nd is charging to full etc. If they all charged at the same time, it would take forever to get all 3 to 100%. Sure, it might be 4.5 hours 1 at a time but that means in 1/3rd of that time your first battery is ready to go. Much preferable.
Preference, I guess. I'm thinking turn around time. The Spark's charger can do 6 batteries in 3 hours, roughly equivalent flight time to the Mini's 3 batteries, which take 4.5 hours. I don't leave the house to go flying with one battery, I go with the full compliment as usually where I'm going there's no outlets. 😀
@@SteveCoutts Well, I have a Mavic 2 zoom. When I finished flying with my first battery I grab the second and fly with it (and now battery 1 is getting charged to full). When I am done flying with 2, I plug it in....but 1 is still not done. Then I fly with 3. Now I plug it in but 1 is full (because the charger kept charging 2, not split the power between 2 and 3). Off I go with 1 at 100% etc etc. If the power was split between 2 while flying with a 3rd, you would never have topped up batteries to hand. My understanding and experience anyway with Mavic 2 zoom.
I've had my Mavic Mini for a few weeks now but due to bad weather have only flown it 3 times. I definitely learnt something, the pause on the RTH button, didn't realise that👍😎 You mentioned one about quickly flipping the gimbal up? Can that be done during filming? ie recording camera straight down them flip it up to look straight forward, without turning the gimbal control? 🤔⚠️👍😎
I've had mine for a few weeks too and same thing, bad weather has kept me grounded most days. You can flip the gimbal while shooting video - could be a cool thing to use creatively - by pressing the "recenter gimbal" option twice. Once to point down and again to point forward.
@@SteveCoutts Ah brilliant! Yes would be great for doing like swipe transitions to a different scene! Excellent I thought that feature was missing off the Mavic Mini? It seems to be fairly standard on the other models using dedicated shoulder buttons. Thanks for the info 👍😎
thank you so much for this video! i am thinking about purchasing this drone, do you know how well it flies in wind(weak and strong)? i'm going to a super windy city and don't want the drone to whisk away, thank you again!
Thanks for watching! DJI lists the max wind speed resistance at 8m/s or 28.8kph (18mph). Honestly, I have not tested the Mini in strong winds but my experience with my Spark tells me that you would want to be *very* cautious or avoid flying in those conditions altogether. I have had some close calls with my Spark in strong winds and the Mini is over 100g lighter. The Mavic Mini is very stable and responsive in light/medium wind or calm conditions. Good luck!
My first drone that I learned on was a DJI Inspire 1. My 2nd is this Mavic Mini. IMO the bigger drone is way easier to learn on...just need to be careful, its a powerful machine.
Found your channel while doing research on Mini. Will subscribe. Good, no fluff take on the product. Is my understanding correct that it will not follow you if you are say, riding a bike, jogging or talking a brisk walk? Pls confirm. Thx.
Steve Coutts appreciate your response. I also found on one of the forums that it doesn’t go higher than 3000m (~9000 ft). If true, I might not be able to use it on hikes above 10k ft. That would be a deal killer. Still confirming this though. Thanks again.
thanks Steve for the tips. subscribed to you and enjoying since the spark era :) also have a spark and received my new mini. I have a youtube channel about nature and use drone footage from time to time. waiting for your future videos
Freewell Gear sent me the All Day 8 Pack of ND/CPL filters and I did a review on them here - th-cam.com/video/nwGqTPYDE3A/w-d-xo.html. I have had one on my Mini almost every flight since I got them. They have worked quite well for me. The only quibble, which I mention in the video, is you have to make sure they are on correctly or you will get light leaks in the corners. Also, if buying them myself I would probably buy a smaller kit. I tend to use the bare CPL the most followed by the ND32/CPL filter. The rest I seldom use but really it depends on what time of day you like to fly. Good luck!
I have seen elsewhere on TH-cam that the RTH beeping can be stopped by quickly hitting the RTH button a second time while actually returning to home. :-)

Thank you for your efforts! New subscriber. Just bought a mini yesterday so everything is new to me. Can't you charge one battery in the quad and the other(s) in the hub? That would give you 2 batteries charging at the same time, "in parallel".
yes you can
Yes. I do it all the time to get faster turnaround.
Thanks learnt a lot like the pause feature and setting the video exposure. I didn’t know you could get ND filters either. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks subscribed
Awesome, thanks! I have a ND filter review coming up very soon. Stay tuned.
Very helpful information, thanks, I've not had chance to fly my mavic mini yet due to storm ciara and storm Dennis grr
Thanks! Yeah, the weather has been spotty here too but sounds like not as bad as you. Stay safe.
@@SteveCoutts try looking up, blackpool storm ciara and ul see how harsh it is.
Thanks you for sharing awesome vídeo and review
Thanks for watching!
@@SteveCoutts its my pleasure Steve you are só professional we learn só much about drones thanks to your channel. God bless you Steve
While flying keep other battery charging I notice by the time I flew 2 flights had one charged back up so haveing a power source near will make charging time faster and you never really deplete all your battery’s works for me
So 4 and half hours is not true if you charge a battery while flying the others and rotate them out
I really depends on how you use it. I tend to take all three batteries and head out on hikes or bike rides where remote charging is not possible. I get home with three depleted batteries. If I want to go out flying again, I have to wait and wait...
Great video! So does this mean when I put the blade guards on, I would have to register this with the FAA?
Thanks. Only if you intend on flying outdoors with prop guards.
Tanks for the pause mode though. I didn’t know that LOL
I thought for a second that steven strange or dr. Strange just had a mini mavic review 😅
Cool! I was happy that feature was still there.
Always love all your videos! Do those polar pro ND filters you had for the Spark fit on the mini?
Thanks Jackie, I appreciate that! The Spark ND filters actually do fit on the Mini but it's not a snug fit. They would likely fall off with any kind of movement. I really just put the Spark's ND filter in the video to show that weight wise it is possible to add one without breaching the sub-250g limit. Cheers!
The most useful point for me was the weight of the drone. Before that, I could not understand why I cannot fly further than 30/50m. After I took off the protective cage I could start to use it as it should be used. Noone mentioned it before. Thanks a lot!
Great! Glad it helped out. 👍
Thank you very much, very interesting video my friend honestly I didn’t know about the upwards gimbal camera movement.👍👍👍👍👍👍🙋🏻♂️
Thanks Alfredo! Happy flying! 😀
Nice sharing about mavic mini
Thanks!
Cheers!
Very nice showing buddy
Thanks Steve, some very handy tips, especially the over exposure warning that I didn't know about 👍
Cool! Good to hear! 😀
Very informative. Thank you
Thanks for watching! 👍
@@SteveCoutts - I didn't know that. Thank you!
Good info for Mini drone newbies!!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching! 👍
I am getting one today. Looks lovelly - Can't wait for it to be delivered :) Thanks for the tips!
Awesome! Have fun! 👍
adjunktus did you like it
I love mine
Just got it today
Great tips , I’ll be buying one for sure.
Thanks! It's a great little drone for a good price.
Good thing the weight problem is not a problem here where Im living
Really good info. Don’t know why would would get any dislikes.
Thanks! LOL. I have long stopped trying to figure that out.
The dislikes are most probably from the android users. As mini only works properly with apple devices.
thank you so much for this video! i am thinking about purchasing this drone, do you know how well it flies in wind(weak and strong)? i'm going to a super windy city and don't want the drone to whisk away, thank you again!
Good luck!
Steve Coutts thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it!
GRAN VIDEO FELICIDADES CON EL MAVIC MINI SALUDOS DESDE YUCATAN, MEXICO
¡Muchas gracias!
My first drone that I learned on was a DJI Inspire 1. My 2nd is this Mavic Mini. IMO the bigger drone is way easier to learn on...just need to be careful, its a powerful machine.
Awesome! The Mavic Mini is a surprisingly powerful little bird. 👍
Found your channel while doing research on Mini. Will subscribe. Good, no fluff take on the product.
Is my understanding correct that it will not follow you if you are say, riding a bike, jogging or talking a brisk walk? Pls confirm.
Thx.
Thanks! The Mini does not have "Active Track" like the other drones in DJI's lineup, so no, it will not follow you. 😀
Steve Coutts appreciate your response. I also found on one of the forums that it doesn’t go higher than 3000m (~9000 ft). If true, I might not be able to use it on hikes above 10k ft. That would be a deal killer. Still confirming this though.
Thanks again.
Great video! Learned something many new tips in just 5 mins of video. Thanks from Russia!
Terrific! Thanks for watching!
I think I learned more than 5 things ... LOL. I was flying mine for the first time today and I kept thinking where is that Pause button; now I know.
Awesome, good to hear! 😀
thanks Steve for the tips. subscribed to you and enjoying since the spark era :) also have a spark and received my new mini.
I have a youtube channel about nature and use drone footage from time to time. waiting for your future videos
Thanks for watching and the sub! Good luck with your Mini! 👍
Good video uncle.. keep it up
Haha! For sure! 😀
Can you recommend a good set of ND or CPL Filters for the Mini, I've been having some issues with that and saw you throw one in there LOL.
Good luck!
Hope the RTH beeping can be silenced in a future update. Can’t wait to see more MM videos, Steve!
Thanks!
I have seen elsewhere on TH-cam that the RTH beeping can be stopped by quickly hitting the RTH button a second time while actually returning to home. :-)
Slim Nil yeah. The last guy I say doing that, it actually canceled the rth
Slim Nil The power button I think it is, just a single tap. Think it works on the Mavic Pro but maybe not the Spark or Mini. Could be wrong though.
Great Video 👍🏻 greetings from Germany
Thanks! Greetings from Canada. Happy, safe flying! 👍
Calgary represent! Thanks for the tips. Great drone. I just got it a week ago.
,
Haha! 👍 Absolutely! Great little drone. Happy flying!
Great video Steve! Lots of great info. Nice to see you enjoying the Mini!
Thanks Kenny! Yeah, really enjoying it just wish the weather was better. It's either been way too cold or snowing. Oh well. 😀
Should I get the mavic mini or the spark i live in myanmar so what do u guys think
What do u guys think which should I get
Sohail Soe mavic mini, it has 30mins if fly time while the spark has around 15mins. It also has better cameras and range
@@jaggerh-l2097 man if the mavic mini had the front obstacle avoidance in the front like the spark than it would be the perfect drone for me but yeah I am pretty sure u will buy the mavic mini
Sohail Soe yeah, it’s just better all round and at the same price
I did learn a few things. Thanks Steve.
Awesome! Cheers Patrick!
it's my first time use the drone, i practice controlling around nearby campus. Just to familiar the control of the drone nad how to maneuver, when reach around 10 meters the drone suddenly drop off when i changed the setting from P mode to Cinematic mode. For a momment i checked the status can't turned on, and the body is in good condition just the battery cap i think a bit cracked....idk why it's a free area i think far away from goverment facility or airport..is that drone jammer do? When i back to home i try to turn it on, and works normally.
Did you see any error messages? Some folks, including myself, are getting a "max power load reached" error, which can cause the Mini to drop. Get in touch with DJI Support. Good luck!
@@SteveCoutts just something like "the aircraft disconnected". I am still looking a place where i want to learn again. A bit afraid when much building around. Lucky enough my Mavic ain't broken, just abit crack on battery lock but it's still work as it be...
@@herihachiro Strange, that is not suppose to happen.
Would be nice to send the data to DJI so they can evaluate and correct some issue. Did you try to do the same to check if you can repeat the failure?
Thanks Steve, the pause button tip was very interesting to know 👍
You bet! Yeah I love flight pause so I was really happy it was still there.
great video what filter would you recommend?
Personally I like the Polar Pro stuff but they haven't released a filter yet. ND filter is kind of a moot point though if you can't adjust the shutter speed manually. 😀
Great tips thanks
Thanks for watching Peter. Cheers!
I learned a lot! 😊
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. 👍
Thank you so much!! You helped me so much
Terrific! Thanks for watching and happy, safe flying!
