- Finding audition songs is hard, especially trying to find unknown material that other people may not be singing!
So here is the first video in my first mini youtube series "Musical Theatre Audition Songs for....."
I hope to eventually cover a range of voice types and hopefully this series will help you to discover at least one new song to add to your rep.

My first audition I had no idea what I was doing. I wish I had seen this before.
Thanks for the video! Such an amazingly fresh take on soprano rep. I've never before heard of 'So in love', and now I'm so in love with it, so thanks! Another few of the 'less performed' soprano songs are "My white knight" from The Musical Man, "I don't know how to love him" from Jesus Christ Superstar and "Mama will provide" from Once on this island, all of them very well composed pieces!
I'm a soprano; I'm surprised about these choices as I never heard of them before. I would say that On My Own is a great well. Great video, Josie Jo. =)
Sez Francis thats the whole point. Its a real advantage to have a lesser known audition song
On my own is definitely more of a mezzo soprano/belt song, and although its beautiful it is very very over done at auditions x
I sang on my own for audition
First of all, I counted how many times you said ‘Beautiful’ and that was 8-9 times
Second of all, my voice is in the alto range so maybe for the next video in the series you can do that!

A good example would be any number from The Drowsy Chaperone. The eponymous character is very much an alto.

all of those songs are overdone and/or not good audition songs. never use any of them
The problem I see with these is that most of them are from pretty new musicals
all great songs, however, not appropriate for auditions and/or sopranos.
Noooo!! You've given away my secret! How Could I Know is one of my go tos! Shhhh.... Also I sing, Your Daddy's Son from Ragtime but my 'Oh goodness, I've got an audition tomorrow' song is Stranger to the Rain (though that's a mezzo belter)

Just Josie Jo I think because it moves into a duet a lot of people don't do it. I love it; beautiful, heartfelt and tragic... what's not to love?

Those songs are really fun for me and I can act them out with lots of emotion, they also fit my voice better
AHHHH I'm so glad you picked How Could I Ever Know! It's one of my favourite theatre songs. I'm a mezzo but I can comfortably sing a lot of soprano songs and that's one of my go-to dishwashing karaoke songs! I haven't had the chance to bust it out for an audition yet but I absolutely will.

Update: I decided to use this song as my more "operatic" song for a drama school audition! Fingers and toes crossed! I love it because I get into it, and it's high but not uncomfortably so. It's in the sweet range for me :P

I'm familiar with the soundtrack for the Yeston/ Kopit "Phantom." I've sung "Home," though not in public, and it is lovely. I just wanted to point out that their version of the story has very little to do with the book by Gaston Leroux. The creators said that they made most of the story up. I've read the book, and the plot of Lloyd Webber's version is actually closer to that source material.

After watching this "Home" has become my jam even though I'm not totally comfortable in the highest notes and my singing teacher loves it and had never heard of another phantom musical; And it's also made me discover Laura Benanti and check out her whole catalogue including "Nine" :)

I'm a lower soprano, my highest note I sing comfortably is an E5, I believe. Maybe i'm a mezzo, idk. But i'm a higher mezzo if so. I'm not in theater, just looking for songs to sing.

“How could I ever know” is my go-to, but I’m auditioning for “the secret garden” tomorrow and it feels tacky to use a song from the show... even though I would love to be Lily

Don’t know if anyone has already said this but the musical The Secret Garden was based on the book. The movies don’t even give the book any justice.
My go-to audition song would be either the 4th or 5th obvious choice for the specific role I’m going for. It’s not the one everyone is doing, but it’s one that fits
I love big fish it’s far to underrated.
My go-to is Burn
But it's so overused, when you audition with it you are tuned out immediately

I love this video💗 some songs are very familiar in here and some not so well, I’m a Soprano myself I would do anything from Shrek the musical any day as that’s my fave but I also love to have ago at you will be found from dear Evan Hanson as that’s a good one (without the speaking parts within it obviously😂) failing all of the above I would go to Les Miserable as I know all of the songs back to front :)) great video as per Josie xxxx

I always use "Dancing through Life" from Wicked as my go-to modern audition song
0 idea why I'm watching a video for songs in the Soprano range... Heh
My go-to is bonnie and clyde's "dying aint so bad". Doesnt do much for my range, but its great for acting, belting and its not too overused

I love Whats the Use in Wond'rin! Somehow I've managed to avoid ever seeing Carousel (which I've been trying to fix for such a long time and failing at miserably) but I so often find myself randomly singing the song! Never thought about it as an audition song though so that's a great new idea you've given me!
My current go to I think would be A Fine Fine Line from Avenue Q. No idea how much it's used, but I really love it!

My go-to song is opportunity in Annie, because I don't really have to try very hard and I can't mess up because it isn't a very high note song. But if somebody called me and told me that I had an audition, I wouldn't be singing. I would be crying

Hello! I've been binging your videos as of late because my school is doing 'Mamma Mia' this fall, and I desperately want either Sophie or Donna. Because I'm not an alto nor a belter, I'm leaning towards Sophie, but I just CAN'T find an audition song I like! Her voice type is hard to place and I want something that gives a 'Sophie' vibe and shows off my voice but isn't a sad ballad. Do you (or anyone who sees this) have any suggestions? It's really stressing me out as I'm a senior and this is my last chance to get a lead!

Wow I just did MAMMA MIA 2 weeks ago! Sophie is mezzo soprano to soprano. A lot of her songs use head voice (except for honey honey)! I hope that’s helpful

Hi there, Of course it does depend on what role you are auditioning for, listen to some other upbeat songs that were popular in the 50s, also have a listen to all shook up the musical, and cry baby the musical, and return to the forbidden planet. Hope that helps, best of luck x
