I know it's a compliment, but Netflix is walled in for those who pay, and they would pay him some amount of money. BBC would be the same. Not only that but they'd likely want all episodes to be the same length to conform not to the subject, but to how long they want them to be. I think about this stuff on a daily basis and it's frustrating because most people want to talk about other stuff, but I always want to talk about THIS stuff. My curiosity and wonder have never faded from my first memories of childhood. I'm 44 years old and every day I wake up I'm in complete awe of this existence we call life. Thank you for making this video.
@chazzat3113 right!? It boggles the mind how most people...or at least many people simply don't make any of this part of their regular conversations. Maybe it's overwhelming? Idk.
It's like the other direction of scale, i.e., to imagine a space journey to the edges of our solar system. The first part, leaving Earth, seems spectacular, as we can observe the growing distance from our home planet as a quickly changing scenery. But, after some time, that becomes boring, as we see that distance increasing ever so slowly. It takes forever to approach Jupiter and then Saturn, while we still can see Earth as a shrinking disk. Shrinking on an immeasurable rate. An animation would perform the same trick with the accelerated speed, skipping the boring parts of the journey, where the perspective changes ever so slowly.
the very atoms that make us are made up of mostly empty space! its insane to think about that even the most solid objects technically have tons of space but for me makes it more understandable thinking about the crush of black holes and neutron stars...putting the mass of Mt. Everest in the space of a table spoon!
@117swordsmen I am not sure how accurate this comparison is, but it remember being told in school that a hydrogen atom for example, is equivalent to a football pitch with football in centre representing nucleus and a pea circling the parameter. In any case (accurate or not), it does illustrate the vast amount of space between atoms. I have often thought, that somewhere within this scale is an explanation for where dark matter/energy is and why it does appear to interact with what we see or can understand
This, my friend, was absolutely amazing. The shot with you on the dune, saying that poem ,with the music playing, was as beautiful as it gets. Thank you.
Thank you, that’s very kind, I was very proud of that one, I did the whole shot in about a day and that’s pretty unusual for me, but it all came together and worked first go, just as I sort of had it in my head, usually there’s lots more tweaking
@@EpicSpaceman It's a good thing that you recognized when something was good even when fast. Sometimes people think that if they got it done easily or quickly that rather than it being a serendipitous occasion or them being in the zone that they did the opposite and are fucking it up.

Now that I think about it the camera trick does make a lot of sense. If you could fly a drone into space, flying out far enough to see the whole solar system would take an exceptionally long time
Just out to Neptune is like 10^13m so it would take much longer than 30 years as that was just 10 steps not 13, I definitely haven’t checked this but my guess is if it were going at 45mph like my one it would be like 30,000 years give or take an order of magnitude. The solar system is much bigger than most of us expect it to be.
Ok the 30 year comment really staggered me. I went from comprehending what is being said to hearing how long it would take to zoom out and instantly being hit by a wave of emotions that I can’t even describe in words. Absolutely mind blown 🤯

Someone in the comment section did the actual math. In reality, it would take 30 years from the atom to reach till the banana. It would take even more than 300 years to reach from the banana till a full size human.
There are very few or little things where I'll watch with 100% focus and attention, without looking through my phone or using it as background music but I clicked on this straight away. I’ve been watching science videos all of my life but this has to be the most thoughtful, intuitive, intelligently crafted videos I have ever seen. So much detail and clear communication! Please never stop doing what you are doing because people like you change the world!
Another way to think about it: if it takes 10 seconds to zoom out from atom -> DNA, which is slightly slower than in the video, but makes the math clean, then it'll be... 100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds) to go from DNA -> bad virus 1,000 seconds (16 minutes 40 seconds) to go from bad virus -> good virus 10,000 seconds (2 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from good virus -> bacteria 100,000 seconds (1 day, 3 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from bacteria -> red blood cell 1,000,000 seconds (11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from red blood cell -> tardigrade 10,000,000 seconds (115 days, 17 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from tardigrade -> edge of a coin 100,000,000 seconds (3 years, 62 days, 9 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from edge of a coin -> coin 1,000,000,000 seconds (31 years, 259 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from coin -> banana And then more than another *three hundred* years to go from banana -> human. If you were to keep going, assuming a six-foot-tall human, it would take over ten billion years to get to the scale of Earth, a relatively small single planet in the vastness of the universe (and halfway there the Earth will have been incinerated by the Sun's supernova anyway). Pretty wild stuff.
@@DdavidoffC Great explanation, but only one mistake: the Sun will not end as a supernova (not even a nova), because of its small mass. It will reach the size of a Red Giant, swallowing the Earth, and then a white dwarf.
Its hard to imagine that as infinite space might be, the micro cosmos is just as infinite. Atoms, which are the smallest thing we can see, are made up of other particles that are made of other smaller particles etc etc. It's actually kind of terrifying that the microscopic cosmos might go on forever in theory.
There is a theoretical limit, the planck scale. But I don't think anyone can actually prove that, since it's many orders of magnitude below anything we can measure.
@@larion2336 right now yes it is a theoretical limit. but maybe in the future we could see beyond that and unlock/access lower dimensions or higher. what if below us was a full pledge universe, and same above us. infinity in both sides.

First video I have seen of yours and it was an instant subscribe. Not only was it insanely high quality but the time and effort you put into trying to teach us seriously deserves a round of applause.
been awhile since i have subscribed to a new TH-cam channel. I wanted to click that button as soon as i finished this video. your explanation, story telling and professionalism of the video and sound are A+.
Fun fact, if you go the other way, zooming in at a linear speed? Let's give ourselves 10 seconds. Let's say that it takes 9 seconds to zoom down to the size of a banana. Then for the next second, you see a incomprehensible blur before you just see an atom. It goes Human, banana, instant blur. 10 minutes? Sure. 9 minutes to zoom in on a banana, 54 seconds to get to the coin, and then incomprehensible blur.
I was hoping he would set the speed to "level 5" so we could see both the blur and the slo-mo, but going to the extreme of a 30 year zoom out is certainly more dramatic😊
Marvelous indeed. Every second of it remained interesting and compelling. And yes, light will not behave similarly to our human scale experience anymore, due to the wavelength of visible light. So, depicting small objects, as if they were large, is an artistic twist, needed to retain the viewer's focus on the essence of scale. Somehow, that is similar to the way scientists twist the colours of deep space pictures from planetary nebulae. The colours are not as the human eye would have seen it, but, the purpose of such pictures is to enhance the visualisation of such objects, using camera and filter technology to discern different cloud materials, so as to add to scientific understanding, as well as to the sheer awe and wonder of it all.
This is amazing that you try to teach people in a simple way and use such beautiful graphics, colors , suspense and music to keep people interested . Along with a soothing tone of voice to not make some people get frustrated
@@EpicSpaceman You are doing it pretty well! On your last video my mouth was wide open the moment I notice the change in illumination right before you presented the mass of that blackhole through the amount of stars that forms it.
Much respect, this was awesome! The linear camera movement was such a clever idea and then pointing out it would take 30 years was a HUGE realization moment for me... That's where the appreciation for the small and the big world kicked in and it made me feel, ironically, quite small
I personally can't wait for you working full time on those upcoming videos. Kudos to this jaw-dropping quality and... I didn't expect to see Blake's Poem. All those astronauts really growing more and more every time new video dropped, happy for you! Keep the quality up!
One Of the Best Videos I Have Ever Seen on the Microscopic World. Great Work, Loved the Poetry in the End and Also Explaining the Camera Works and How Small is an Atom. 👍👍
This is a delightful and visually stunning video with much useful information about how to view scale! For many years, I've used scale examples to help folks understand how terribly wrong the usual portrayals of atoms are, focusing in particular on how in an atom the size of a football stadium, the nucleus would be the size of a large grain of sand. The electrons shown moving around reflect an even greater reality distortion, with all testable versions of how electrons appear to an outside probe giving a result far more like the electron clouds of chemistry than the point-like particles physics prefers. I will add one small suggestion: Beware of the danger of false endings. That's when the description seems to enter an ending phase that makes the viewer think the video is almost over when it is not. Viewers are willing to stay for longer videos but need clarification if they feel the video is about to end midway, such as when you reach the hydrogen atom. At that point, I recall becoming deeply puzzled at what would come next. A short bit of preface up front that explicitly names the parts of your video would help, e.g., the scaling journey, the speed journey, and infinity in your hand.
Thank you! This was thoughtfully written and much appreciated, good advice on the pacing and false ending too, I could have done a better job there when I wrote the script. I think originally actually I made it into different parts but somewhere along the line lost that.Your football stadium metaphor is remarkable because it’s almost exactly the same as one I’ve written a script for, I’ll definitely be exploring that world of empty atoms soon. Bill Bryson I think described it as flies in a Cathedral which blew me away. Thanks again for the kind words!
@@EpicSpaceman That may be so, however, it is something that many non-artistic minds in the scientific community have tried to do, and some of their 'graphics' are not that bad. The advent of remarkable cgi is with us in earnest now, and I am certain that a mind like yours already has already 'visualised' subatomic particles. I'd be fascinated to see your vision of The Standard Model.
Thank you for all the videos! I'm beyond happy that I came across your channel, it's truly a bummer that TH-cam doesn't recommend such videos. I must admit when you made the drone speed zoom out I thought it will play the rest of the video so like 6-7min... then you said it will take 30years and I flip my desk... you wasn't joking when you said "It's even crazier than that"

@@EpicSpaceman If this video took you 4 months I am super amazed, especially that you did it yourself. Such a high quality, what do you use for 3D modeling if I may ask?
Maybe I'm not thinking about this correctly but what I'm trying to understand is the established smallest scale, how fast are atoms moving? If were saying a camera the size of an atom moving at (45 mph) would take 30 years to travel from an atom on your belly to just above, and we can say that actual atoms move around at hundreds of meters per second, then what would other atoms look like at that scale, too fast to perceive?
Much, much too fast to perceive if we’re talking about for instance air molecules, they’re too fast to perceive even on human scale as they move at the speed of sound, so when you zoom in even more they’re constantly crashing into each other and not even a blur
I will remember the scale: - Epic Spaceman TH-cam channel height on a Smartphone - 18cm - thumbnail of latest video - 1.8cm - play button - 0.18cm - thumb of Like button - 0.018cm - 0.18mm - really fat bacteria, on my screen from my thumb, liking the video together with me - 0.0018cm - 0.018mm - 18um - size of impossibly to press dislike button 1.8um - viruses orbiting the dislike button - 0.18um, cuz who else could dislike this awesome video?

Kang could barely run away from his girlfriend even after getting in shape for creed
This is why Endgame time was so slow down there.
Another fantastic episode! Brilliant idea with the 10x memorization trick, and I loved the explanation of the exponential vs linear pull away shot. This is by far the best science content I’ve ever encountered in terms of concept, content, and awe-inspiring visuals. I’m proud to be one of your early supporters…and congrats on your new sponsor!
Thank you! As always I really appreciate your support and congratulations yourself again for hitting one million subs recently, you’re doing great and the kind words, support and Patreon mean the world, cheers!
I'm so glad he brought that up. I literally never realized that the camera is firing out like a rocket! it is somewhat deceiving to our perception.
As I was watching this I had similar thoughts. Mine were, “I’m sending this to each of my five twenty-something year old kids to show their children, telling them, ‘This is the single most educational video I’ve seen - ever.’” (And I’ve watched literally thousands over the last ten years.)
THIS is why TH-cam exists. Truly epic, brother. The worlds within worlds within worlds. Fascinating! Thank you for this!
Right ! OG content like this is what TH-cam needs to push
I can not imagine the work that went into this. So well done.
Thank you! It took a while! But all the positivity from people like yourself makes it all worthwhile
I'm in Australia and was about to go to bed at 3am when I saw this at the top of my recommended list. Needless to say, sleep was quickly deemed unimportant! I only discovered the channel a week ago, and figured I'd be waiting months for another one. I salute you sir, these are just about the highest quality and most informative videos I've seen on you tube, and I have a lot off varied interests. Thank you Epic Spaceman, and thank you algorithm.
Amazing! Thanks so much for all the kind words and high praise, Australia is awesome too, now do please go get some sleep! P.s. great to have you here on the channel!

I am deeply impressed by these visuals…
Not to mention the well of knowledge we get from your commentary 👏
Thanks so much!
@@EpicSpaceman This really is incredibly high quality. Well done. Such great visuals and learning experience. Keep going. You're doing amazing work.
Feels like a blessing, I’d hate that our education comes at a price when everyone benefits from it. That’s not to say the creator would be malicious for creating it at a cost, but rather he is a blessing for giving us information to help us better understand our world and our lives. So that we have the opportunity to use that information for a greater purpose.
Commenting so the algorithm can push your works to the recommended page, People NEEDS to see your channel and videos! This Quality of the work is amazing! I hope you prosper here in youtube!
Same here man
@chazzat3113 right!? It boggles the mind how most people...or at least many people simply don't make any of this part of their regular conversations. Maybe it's overwhelming? Idk.
The real zoomout finally made it click for me in order to visualize the actual scale. Brought a tear to my eye. 30 years! Thanks so much man.
When he said 30 I was expecting him to say hours.... then he said years, I said wow.
I like how there’s always space between everything.
So much space!
They used to say “Nature abhors emptiness”, but in reality, most of the nature is empty!! If fact >99.99% is empty!!!
the very atoms that make us are made up of mostly empty space! its insane to think about that even the most solid objects technically have tons of space but for me makes it more understandable thinking about the crush of black holes and neutron stars...putting the mass of Mt. Everest in the space of a table spoon!
@117swordsmen for Mt everest, even smaller then that. WAY smaller.
@117swordsmen
I am not sure how accurate this comparison is, but it remember being told in school that a hydrogen atom for example, is equivalent to a football pitch with football in centre representing nucleus and a pea circling the parameter.
In any case (accurate or not), it does illustrate the vast amount of space between atoms. I have often thought, that somewhere within this scale is an explanation for where dark matter/energy is and why it does appear to interact with what we see or can understand
This is phenomenal. One of the best things I have seen on TH-cam to this day.
This video is ahead of it's time, i can imagine this being a typical content in 2124
This, my friend, was absolutely amazing.
@@EpicSpaceman I work a lot with chemistry and innovation. Seriously thinking of placing that quote in my office somewhere.
@@dennisklomp2361that would be very cool, it does seem rather appropriate
@@EpicSpaceman It's a good thing that you recognized when something was good even when fast. Sometimes people think that if they got it done easily or quickly that rather than it being a serendipitous occasion or them being in the zone that they did the opposite and are fucking it up.
its the fact that you can see the coin in the background as if its a mountainscape, thats whats really making me understand the scale of these things, thank you for creating this
If TH-cam had awards for beautiful and very informative videos, you would win. You opened my eyes to the world of the very, very small. Looking forward to your next video.
I’ve never heard anyone explain the size of things like you, it’s fabulous, I’ve only just came across your channel and I’m 🪝, I absolutely love it..
Thank you! So pleased to have you here and enjoying the channel, I tried to make this one as helpful as possible because I get a bit lost with all the different sizes and it’s useful to have a bit of a map
Mr. Epic makes his videos without a team. It may take longer, but the wait is like waiting for a new season of a favorite show. You know it'll be worth it. I'm glad to see the audience numbers climbing rapidly - cudos, well deserved!
Thank you! Really appreciate that perspective, I know the pain of waiting for that new season though so I will try to make things a bit more regular going forward!

@@EpicSpacemanI seriously imagined an entire team and rented out office building and everything. You’re amazing. This made me feel like a little kid again watching science videos and being blown away ❤ Made me emotional/nostalgic
This is a solo project? Holy moly.
To paraphrase Jules-Pierre Mao: “And what do I do for a living? Make round buttons on Webpages”.
That whole video was stunning... from the visuals to your insights. I've never heard it all broken down quite that well. Thank you so much!
You’re very much welcome! So pleased you enjoyed so much
Ok the 30 year comment really staggered me. I went from comprehending what is being said to hearing how long it would take to zoom out and instantly being hit by a wave of emotions that I can’t even describe in words. Absolutely mind blown 🤯
This is the first video of yours that I've ever seen, but my God, I'm subscribing instantly. It's very reminiscent of Carl Sagan and Cosmos, and I can think of no higher compliment.

no one ever told me that zooming out at camera speed from atom to human scale takes 30 years to complete that's even more mind-blowing to know than reading quantum mechanics or even black hole
never used to see the scale of things in this manner, really great content sir keep up the great work, you really are a gem in the Sea of TH-camrs
try this: time and space are literally the same thing. that's one of the consequences of relativity.
source: I have a physics degree.
Someone in the comment section did the actual math. In reality, it would take 30 years from the atom to reach till the banana. It would take even more than 300 years to reach from the banana till a full size human.
Bro is living in 3020
There are very few or little things where I'll watch with 100% focus and attention, without looking through my phone or using it as background music but I clicked on this straight away. Honestly this is such amazing content. Visually stunning, especially the lighting is so crispy. I appreciate the small "unnecessary" details, they really polish the whole product. I always had this innate fascination for Space and you help me explore that. Honestly sending some love from Germany, keep doing what you love, cheers!

"It would take 30 ..."
me: "minutes? yeah, that would be a long video"
ES: "... years"
me: "..."
Another way to think about it: if it takes 10 seconds to zoom out from atom -> DNA, which is slightly slower than in the video, but makes the math clean, then it'll be...
100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds) to go from DNA -> bad virus
1,000 seconds (16 minutes 40 seconds) to go from bad virus -> good virus
10,000 seconds (2 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from good virus -> bacteria
100,000 seconds (1 day, 3 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from bacteria -> red blood cell
1,000,000 seconds (11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from red blood cell -> tardigrade
10,000,000 seconds (115 days, 17 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from tardigrade -> edge of a coin
100,000,000 seconds (3 years, 62 days, 9 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from edge of a coin -> coin
1,000,000,000 seconds (31 years, 259 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes, 40 seconds) to go from coin -> banana
And then more than another *three hundred* years to go from banana -> human. If you were to keep going, assuming a six-foot-tall human, it would take over ten billion years to get to the scale of Earth, a relatively small single planet in the vastness of the universe (and halfway there the Earth will have been incinerated by the Sun's supernova anyway). Pretty wild stuff.
@@DdavidoffC Great explanation! Thanks for putting in the effort with this comment! 👍
@@DdavidoffC Great explanation, but only one mistake: the Sun will not end as a supernova (not even a nova), because of its small mass. It will reach the size of a Red Giant, swallowing the Earth, and then a white dwarf.
@@fisicartucr6337 Which is great because as a white dwarf it will probably outlive most of the universe itself.
Bro literally that shit floored me
Thanks for your hard work and videos, Spaceman!
@@larion2336 I think its more a limit of our physics understanding, not a real limit.
@@carl-os4603 hence why it is theoretical
Infinite all the way up, infinite all the way down

It looked good tbh
Your videos are so unique, so well thought and within everyone's reach ! Great work !
😂
I was hoping he would set the speed to "level 5" so we could see both the blur and the slo-mo, but going to the extreme of a 30 year zoom out is certainly more dramatic😊
I would watch the ten hours though, but really paying attention to the last hour lol
Just what I have been looking for to watch. Superbly crafted videos about the universe with no loud music and no over excited narrator…
You just keep living up to your username! Another epic video! Thank you sir
Haha, thank you! Always trying to do the wonderful stuff out there justice
Along with a soothing tone of voice to not make some people get frustrated
that twist at the end blows my mind...incredible
Thank you! Always trying to get a twist in somewhere!

One Of the Best Videos I Have Ever Seen on the Microscopic World. Great Work, Loved the Poetry in the End and Also Explaining the Camera Works and How Small is an Atom. 👍👍
This channel is the only one I'm waiting for the next video to get uploaded and rewatching old ones again and again
When you start at the atom keep going to quarks and into string theory... Great channel well done keep up the great work!👍⚛️

@@EpicSpaceman ooh man, please do but take your time. I am sure everyone will gladly wait! ✌️
@@EpicSpaceman That may be so, however, it is something that many non-artistic minds in the scientific community have tried to do, and some of their 'graphics' are not that bad.

To put this into a bit more perspective.. There are more atoms in a grain of sand than there are grains of sand on the planet.
New peak just dropped
Thank you!
How come I didn't know you before.. it's really depressing..you deserve millions of subscriber.. amazing educational videos
