I think its funny that if they talk like that they really think you believe it. But when they go to work and ask you to adjust the welding machine because they dont know this one ....or the gas and wire is something they haven't work with i know enough.
I was a welder before with 1 year in school to learn the profession. It was back in the 70's and the machines did weld only big flat plates for big ships. There where a few welders with "G6" welding certification that screw up their "field test" because they where nervous. And like in this video, I assume they had almost no welding experience except for the course that led to the "G6".

Welding the flat plates was probably done by sub arc (sand shielding) when those things are running right they do as close to a perfect weld as can ever be made.

Yup. Let me have at it. I will for sure get it done the first time. The travel speed is to hight and parameters are not set correctly. The welding parameters are set for a positioner eelding method. Start from 3 o'clock to 6 first with a differen parameter setting then work from 12 o'clock to 3. With higher setting.

BullGooseAnon there's actually a lot to take into consideration. Just because it's a bug doesn't mean it'll run right every single time. Your stick out can come too close or back off too far. You're always adjusting while top to bottom.
You can clearly watch the vid. When it gets to the bottom, it struggles. I have never in my life welded that fast, specially with pipe. The heat was set too hot, you can see it blow through.
I trust my hands more than that machine, if something goes wrong with the machine and you're fucked, its just like trusting entirely on a flux cored machine, if its brand new you may be ok, but if its some raggedy shit from the company you work for, you better be praying, that's why I do all of my work with welding rods and nothing more. I haven't heard a pipe welder complain about the welding rods, unless he is not a real welder lol

Wanna no what i think? I think that the second welder starts too early,cause the tubes were preheated and the high heat from the first weld hold the temperature higher than he needed.
how could you not tell I could hear it wasn't welding correctly like wire speed to slow or voltage to high and there spray arcing that's bad there using a orbital welder and they should already have a correct procedure that's terrible. all dressed up looking professional with the gear but are clueless
I welded bigger pipe while laying in the mud with water cumin out of pipe and did the weld by self. Horstal boring. Those welds always held. I am a average welder l think

Anyone who has ever witnessed a welders test can see many things going on here that should never happen.

If that was the case everyone would have failed, for sure the guy on the other side would have. Lack of experience was a large factor, IMO he should have never been aloud to test, he needed way more training. He did not know how to use the remote, he could not grind his start stops....
Is that half inch ? Is it double bevel? what is gap for root pass? should be able to run knife edge double bevel butted up together and run a real thick root downhand like that is weird that hot pass went through on downhand just run alot of passes trouble with that big of pipe is youll want to try and fill it faster and try and put too much metal down each pass, your better off doing many little passes .. here is a video from when i was in school of me rooting a 12 inch pipe in 5g th-cam.com/video/zy9vHI7soLY/w-d-xo.html

You actually manually set the speed, stick out, position, welding heats etc. To hot a setting and to slow a speed will burn through just like by hand.

Machine or by hand, it still has to be right. The operator must be able to set up and control the process to pass.

They need two guys and a helper. Pass it on, never miss a beat. Not sure of the wire but it didn't sound like flux core.

For me every test is stressful, but this should be normal for a welder, there tested on every weld they make for there entire career.

From my experience it is faster and much easier to train a new welder than MMA welding, but like anything, everything has to be working right.
