Failure is only failure if you mess up and you walk away angry and never return, if you mess up walk away angry, come back, cool down, and you think what can you do to fix it, that’s feedback, that’s the mentality to have

Been there and done that. Pipe welding takes a devotion. Best advise I was ever given in the trade was from a man past retirement age and still working, he said "Precision teaches humility". Taught me a lot with that simple phrase. I'm done with it now but sure had a hell of a lot of fun.

I damn near did myself the other day. I was doing a 3g flux core and 6g TIG. I’ve done so much flux core, the guy was showing me welds n shit in the shop and I was like oh yeah no problem, I can make em look like that dead ass asleep.
It was just 3/8 so I had a root in it (ran it a little colder than I wanted/expected to. Different machine and brand wire so I went on the safe and cold side) then I ran my normal settings 25/300, and got two little spots of undercut (maybe 1/16) but it looked like lack of fusion, the guy givin the test was like “just run another one up that side” I said fuck that imma grind her flat, re groove and not fuck it up this time, lol.
Both weld tests (as well as the 1g stick tube visual) shot beautiful on X-ray. But it was still a humbling moment. None of us are perfect no matter what anyone says

Hi Austin, I'm in my 30's and decided to go back to my vocational school for welding. Got by the Oxy-fuel beads, butt joint, lap joint, and t joint finally and am now laying 6010 flat. At times I wonder if I'm too old to start over since I see some of the younger 17 year olds advancing faster than me and laying straight, even beads. But I get motivation and inspiration from youtube welders that show me that not all the instagram welders are perfect and we can still learn years down the road. Thanks for the videos. And yes, I just subscribed to your other channel.

You said it better than anyone could. Us guys who do it for a living know you’re gonna bust one eventually. Best thing to do is take it as a learning experience and make yourself better. You’re right about the undercut though. Soaking it in on a bellhole it’ll look good but on a 45 it will undercut the top edge on the top half of the pipe every time. I busted one for the same thing.

Man Austin that’s crazy. I am a 16 year old welder in a welding school getting my certifications I can’t decide whether to be a pipeline or in the oil fields. But what I’ve also learned in welding school is when you mess up it teaches you something and it only makes you better man it frustrates me sometimes with overhead and vertical but it only makes me better.

I'm not a pipeline welder, I mainly Sub arc and Fluxcore. I've worked with the same company for going on 14 years. A few years back I had a chance to get on with another company paying more. I tested out on something I've done many times, I ended up busting it. The QA guy told me it was close but he had no choice but to fail it. It does hurt the pride and takes a good person to admit it. Though I think it was one of those things where it was better that I did bust it. Because just a year later the Company had a massive layoff, a couple months after that I had a health issue where I was off work for several months. So in the end it was good that I didn't get that job. It has worked out much better since. You have a great attitude and that will work out for you much better in the end.

If you’re a combo welder, you need to look at working shutdowns, and oil refinery welding. Better situations and easier to get jobs long as you can weld good. And they provide all the machines etc.

As a Retired Air Traffic Controller who worked 18 years at the worlds busiest airport I couldn’t agree more with your mantra “don’t do it for the money, do it for the love of the job.” Seen my share of burnt out controllers who turned into alcoholics or worse took their own lives because they tried to fake the love and it would eventually wear off.
You’ve definitely got the right attitude and will go far in life.

Undercut happens when you take metal out with out replacing. On a 45 gravity take place so what I do is drag the rod with little back whips x75 is a strong high grade carbon preheat to at least 150 carry a temp stick not preheating that will also cause undercut.

Dipping a test sucks!! Feel for you brother!
I was doing a test 30 years ago,for offshore.6" shed 80i was going in hot filling up,and it fell out on me,too hot!! i had 5 people outside my bay and panicked, ground out a bit and dropped my amps a bit and carried on,they said on my xray i had a lugworm in my weld!Haha
Didnt feel that funny at the time, believe me! But got my second chance, was calmer and passed!Phew!!! the difference between work and good money is stressful! Believe me!
