This can be traced back to the days theater didn't allow women to perform in plays. So crossdressing and romance scenes were fully performed by men. This makes Shakespeare's plays a bit more wild especially when a man is pretending to be a woman pretending to be man. It's on a degree of meta commentary as Tropic Thunder. It's argued that Tyler Perry was in fact trying to make that level of meta humor but it only high lighted that it's considered meta if done by white people which isn't the case and wasn't within the educated populace. The broader social commentary only fed the ideology that it wasn't high minded but closeted despite being during peak lgbtq acceptance in society. That especially within certain circles like heavily toxic masculine community like here in the Tristate, it was reduced to a gay thing regardless of the meta commentary. Ultimately, both were slightly correct for different reason. The meta commentary of the romance period did have high borne homosexual acceptance but social common rejection and persecution of it, just like Diddy and Meek Mills. Where Kat Williams explains how successful circles all required selling your soul and doing some kind of gay. There's some truth in the powerful and rich don't live by the same standards of boarder society and often do whatever it is they want without shame or guilt since the establish order of society is meant for majority working/lower class. It's the saying of "laws with fines aren't meant that you couldn't do it, just you needed to be able to pay to do it." Now it doesn't really work that way but also it sorta does especially within some circles. Not everyone with 70 Felony Charges can freely travel as they please but Trump can. Not everyone can show up in a different town and kill someone claiming self defense but a white boy with connections can. Tyler Perry regardless if he was gay or not, couldn't get away from the stigma even within his own community due to standards of society even though many white actors could. The Wayne Brothers did it better than Tyler Perry suggesting the contrary, Tyler was just gay and trying to hide his shame and conflicts within his beliefs where Marlon (my name sake) and Shawn embodied the true meta narrative case that was both performatively humorous but that their rendition would be accepted especially since they're not any of those things mentioned. I relate this to Tropic Thunder had the best use of Black face that wasn't distasteful and accepted by the Black Community. Which "what you do mean you people" was unironically used both within and outside the community. Where Tyler Perry was a bit more niche.
