Rhino 3D v7 - QuadRemesh, a Quick Introduction

  • Rhino 7 is the most significant version upgrade for Rhino 3D in its history. There are many new features, including SubD tools (previously only available to users of the now defunct plugin T-Splines or otherwise in applications like 3ds Max, Maya, Blender and ZBrush), Rhino.Inside.Revit (run Rhino and Grasshopper within the BIM modeller Revit®), QuadRemesh (quickly create a quad mesh from NURBS geometry or meshes), new Rhino 7 Presentation tools and much, much more.
    QuadRemesh is great new tool in Rhino v7 for reverse engineering and mesh retopology. In this short introductory video, Phil Cook from Simply Rhino runs through the basics of QuadRemesh and shows an example of how this can be helpful in reverse engineering.

    Hi, I want to generate a topographic surface based on polylines. After generating the surface, I want to create a point cloud from the created surface. It is possible?
    Thanks!

      @SimplyRhino3D  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To create a surface from a series of contours (and let’s say that these include both open and closed curves) you can use the Patch Command. If you want to retopologise the resulting surface so the structure more closely represents the contour curves then you can use Quad Remesh to create a SubD Surface. With either a NURBS, SubD or Mesh you can use Extract Points to generate a set of points that can be converted to a point cloud or alternatively (and this may be a better approach) you can project a grid of lines onto the surface, SubD or Mesh and then using the projected curves only run Curve > Curve from Objects > Intersection to create a set of points. Hope this helps.

    How to keep the original boundary?

    • @SimplyRhino3D
      @SimplyRhino3D  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you mean the terrain boundary? Obviously the simplified mesh boundary can’t match the existing boundary, as we need the exact number of edges to create a match. So, in Plan I would reduce the boundary of the rebuilt Mesh or SubD and then create a transitional Mesh or Surface between the two. There is a work in progress command to match SubD edges in development but this won’t be available for a while.

    It's quite unbelievable that no one seems to be thinking of point clouds to be meshed in rhino. I can mesh clouds with the XirusCad PlugIn, but have no chance to do any adjustments in it. If one has a very noisy cloud as usual in shipbuilding with scaffolding, people, welding machines, hoses everywhere, straightening plates and so on, there's no real effective way to go. I have been cleaning up the cloud already for days and still there's no way inside rhino. In one word? Poor, really poor.

      Hi Andre, The free Cockroach plug-in for Rhino will create meshes from a point cloud. It can be downloaded via the v7 Package Manager or from Food4Rhino:

      If any customer finds a bug in Rhino please do let McNeel (developers of Rhino) know, while no-one can guarantee bug-free software or immediate fixes they will action and have a history of implementing fixes and sometimes very quickly. So, best action if you find a bug, tell the Developers all about it!
