  • Rhino 7 is the most significant version upgrade for Rhino 3D in its history. There are many new features, including SubD tools (previously only available to users of the now defunct plugin T-Splines or otherwise in applications like 3ds Max, Maya, Blender and ZBrush), Rhino.Inside.Revit (run Rhino and Grasshopper within the BIM modeller Revit®), QuadRemesh (quickly create a quad mesh from NURBS geometry or meshes), new Rhino 7 Presentation tools and much, much more.
This Rhino 3D v7 video, brought to you by Simply Rhino, takes a look at the new SubD modelling metaphor in Rhino v7. This is shown using Rhino for Mac but is equally relevant to Rhino for Windows.

With the video Phil Cook from Simply Rhino looks at three areas where a SubD workflow could have advantages over NURBS, these are:
    1. Creating and Adjusting Transitions.
    2. Using the advantages of SubD to avoid topology issues that occur in NURBS modelling.
    3. Multipipe command to quickly create viable geometry from simple lines, polylines and curves.
If you would like to watch a longer video that introduces SubD then you can watch our ‘An Introduction to SubD in Rhino v7’ which you'll find on our channel and within our Rhino 3D v7 playlist.
We hope you enjoyed this video and will subscribe to our channel and let us have your comments too, of course.

Nice to meet you. How do I separate or break points in SubD? In fact, there are many inconveniences with the SubD tool.

Hi, as far as I’m aware you can’t. Faces and Edges can be removed, and removing a face in a closed object will leave a hole. Points can be deleted in a SubD but this will just result in a change in topology.

Great video Phil! Can I ask you, what E-map are you using to check the smothness of your model, I can't find it in my list, doesn't that one come with Rhino?
    Thanks!

Hi Stefano, thank you for your positive comments. Here I made a custom display mode which is a modified version of the ‘Shaded mode’. I used ‘Custom Material for All Objects’ and here I created a material using a blurry Spherical Map (of, in this case, a beach scene) for the Environment and set the Gloss Intensity, Gloss Finish and Reflectivity of the material to about 90-95%. Hope this helps.

@@SimplyRhino3D Thank you very much for your explanation, pretty clear and very interesting approach. Will try to make my own custom "shaded mode". Thank you again!

Will wrinkles occur when converting subd to nurbs?
Do I need to readjust the subd control points to get exactly the same quality?

    • @SimplyRhino3D
      @SimplyRhino3D  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Answer is ‘No, if your SubD is smooth with no wrinkles then converting to NURBS will give you a smooth representation.
If your patch layout in SubD is fairly simple then this will of course help the NURBS conversion.

Hi Janos. Do you mean retopologising a mesh? If so then QuadRemesh can help here - see th-cam.com/video/7IZE7NkmJ78/w-d-xo.html

@@SimplyRhino3D Hi thanks for you comment. yes retopology. quadremesh is pretty good, but sometimes removed too much details. I assume i need to get used to this. thanks again. Regards

Hi Michael. This is the dark scheme on. In Windows, the interface elements are customisable - go to Options > Appearance > Colors
